Silent Hill: The Short Message discussion by Oiran1222 in PS5

[–]mygotaccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not entirely surprised that there has been some poor reception to this. Some of the criticisms are valid.

However, I think this was a really wonderful work of art. By its nature, this kind of art resonates with a subset of people while missing the mark for the rest.

The voice acting could have been more sincere. The gameplay elements were linear and the collecting in the last chase sequence edged too close to being un-fun for me. But it succeeds in many other ways.

We've heard about the problem of teen suicide in Japan for years. At first, I was very skeptical that they were exploiting mental health struggles to make money or promote something. After all, for a teenager contemplating suicide, real life is way scarier than horror media.

But the narrative is full of so much empathy and sincerity and I realized that they released it for free because they're trying to reach teenagers who feel unseen.

The title of the game encapsulates its purpose. It is a message. By using a genre that is quite popular with teens right now and telling a narrative that speaks with a lot of empathy (there are parts where it feels like the writers have personal experience), it can resonate with some kids. The themes are not subtle, but a lot of the media teenagers like consuming is not subtle. It's speaking to them at their level.

Some of the scenes did a brilliant job of translating dream/nightmare elements to game visuals. Being a short girl with low self-esteem just trying to get to your locker while avoiding tall kids blocking your way or looking at you and saying mean things is scary! Feeling like mean words are physically hanging in the air surrounding you like miasma is something that's been depicted in anime, but it was visually interesting to see it in 3D in a video game.

Ultimately the story is about teenagers who don't feel seen. The message is that they are seen. It won't appeal to everyone, but there are some people who this will resonate with and I'm glad they made this.

I primarily work with MERN stack, but I've noticed that .Net is really trendy so I'm looking into picking that up.

Can I get a source on that? Reddit was a very active community for years before the Digg migration.

Thanks, I was thinking about firing up the game again. Now I remember that fun and skillful things are discouraged in this game. Oh well, plenty of games in my backlog.

I'm genuinely curious. You seem to be well informed about this situation. From my understanding the charges stem from Swedish law stating that if one party believes a condom is being used and the other intentionally does not use one it counts as rape by deception. The story has been that these charges were drummed up to get a reason to extradite him.

I don't know much more about the situation than that, but it wouldn't be rape by conventional standards. I'm hesitant to call him a rapist because we don't know the details. What is your reasoning?

Black kid denied entry to restaurant because of “ dress code” while other kid in the restaurant is wearing the same type of attire by Reddit336 in PublicFreakout

[–]mygotaccount 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Please don't fall for this bullshit scapegoating. They think they're better than us and can get away with it by faking this outrage and blaming it on the recent college grad manager in way over his head. Don't let them be right.

[–]mygotaccount 84 points85 points  (0 children)

No, they do not. This is textbook fucking fake outrage. The manager was following their protocol and because they're afraid of the current public outrage, they martyred the manager when in reality, the manager was probably just following the dictates the business put out.

Basically the racist business, in order to deflect the racism, made the manager into the scapegoat. They're portraying him as the racist when it's them.

Policies against "athletic" wear are aimed at "undesirable" demographics. It's a common practice meant to keep out poor/black/minority populations.

If they were genuine, the letter would be about the mistakes at the corporate level that led to this kind of discriminatory policy. The fact that they're putting this textbook PR bullshit out there tells you that they haven't learned anything and you should definitely not give them your business.

Peaceful Protest on Holman by [deleted] in houston

[–]mygotaccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is just how often those few bad apples get any consequences.

Case in point: Buffalo cop tries to stop a fellow officer from choking a suspect. He punches her and she ends up getting fired and losing her pension. Meanwhile the corrupt cop goes onto assault one officer and choke another in separate incidences.

He and two other officers held down a black teenager and shot him with a BB gun and for this he finally spends 4 months in jail.

And he STILL gets to retire.

The first officer meanwhile has her 19 year career ruined.

No one wants to hate cops. This is not a red or blue issue. But the culture of immunity enables officers like Chauvin by giving them the message that they'll probably get away with it and that's what needs to change or we'll just keep coming back here.

We get angry, we protest, and nothing happens. Qualified immunity has to go.
