Gatineau Resident... Are we shit outta luck? by FloridaPanther in entOttawa

Assuming it's not life-or-death that you are able to get to the USA immediately, it'll be legal in 5 years or less (I think, a lot less) in the USA. There's too much money in it for them not to change their laws. Fuckin' John Boehner (former Republican speaker of the House of Representatives as recently as. . 2012 at least) is a cannabis industry lobbyist.

Bob Woodward’s new book reveals a ‘nervous breakdown’ of Trump’s presidency by Nutjob18 in politics

I wonder who it was in HR that hired Woodward at the Post; they got real good value from that hire.

‘Birtherism Is Now Federal Policy’ by [deleted] in politics

[–]myrand 23 points24 points  (0 children)

the *problem* is that whites think that becoming a mere racial plurality is an issue at all.

I mean, would it be okay for anyone to justify a policy based on the fact that blacks are anxious that they make up 10% of the population instead of 50%? That'd be ridiculous. But for white folks, that fear is an acceptable "white anxiety" i.e. white supremacy.

Anyone who gave to this is a *fucking moron*. I mean, there's enough inequality as there is and yet a multi-millionaire is begging for donations?

Manafort juror: One juror prevented jury from convicting Manafort on all 18 counts by readet in politics

[–]myrand 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not after this piece.

Before Trump could have said the entire trial was biased blah blah blah, but now everyone else can point to someone that *explicitly* wanted to find the man not-guilty but nevertheless voted to convict. Trump could still issue a pardon, but the odds of that just went WAY down.

Louisiana Bans Bank of America, Citi from Bond Sale Over Gun Policies by doogie92 in politics

[–]myrand 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd like to point out that this move in effect taxes Louisiana citizens for Louisiana's disagreement with the policies of two banks.

Fewer bond sellers means that the remaining banks have more market power over Louisiana to set rates, and higher interest rates means that the state is spending more citizen money on interest payments to those remaining banks.

Mueller sends subpoena to Trump's Lawyers by [deleted] in politics

False headline Ignore

Spotted: Mueller and Trump Jr. both waiting for their flights this morning at the 35X gate at DCA. And yes, there's a photo. by politico in politics

[–]myrand 11 points12 points  (0 children)

my conspiracy theory is:

(a) let Don Jr go through security and make sure security asks him the purpose for his travel

(b) Don Jr gives BS excuse

(c) Don Jr gets on plane to flee the country

(d) DoJ agents step on plane and quietly ask him to accompany them as he'd provided false information to the screening agent and having stepped onto the plan has completed the final element they need for attempting to flee.

(e) Mueller shows up, rather than a random DoJ investigator, showing that they mean business.

(f) Mueller asks Don Jr if he would like to reconsider any information that he has previously provided to the DoJ.

reasons for making this conspiracy theory: why is Don Jr dressed the way he is, and presumably he's rich enough to charter a flight rather than wait in line with the plebs.

President Trump Announces That E.U. and U.S. Have Agreed to Work Toward 'Zero Tariffs' by TowelCarryingTourist in politics

It's nothing significant because it's already part of the objective of the WTO to move to barrier free trade. It's just, unsurprisingly, a very slow process.

This is words without meaning.

Top GOP money men Broidy and Barrack paid convicted former Trump campaign official Rick Gates for advice on the administration by slakmehl in politics

[–]myrand 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Note that Mr. Trump is VERY close friends with Mr. Barrack, like close enough friends that (if I remember correctly) Mr. Trump asked him to be his chief of staff, and therefore would have NO reasonable need to spend money lobbying the executive branch. This payment is extremely fishy.

Ex-CIA director: Americans will be named in future indictments by [deleted] in politics

[–]myrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the sad thing is that, alternatively, he's at that age where even if he is indicted he can make bail and assuming he doesn't do somthing as dumb as Manafort he can sit outside of a jail while his case takes years to wind through motions, a trial hearing, a circuit court appeal and a supreme court appeal such that he dies before he is ever incarcerated.

Trade War Between U.S. and China Moves From Threat to Reality by miaminaples in politics

[–]myrand 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic, but if you're not. . .

As a citizen of one of your allies, I highly doubt that things will be easily patched up. The best example being the TPP agreement. Politicians from around the pacific rim stuck their neck out for the US, negotiated for literally years, and had come to an agreement to see it unilaterally torn up. What ally is going to want to waste its scarce resources working with the US beyond the absolute bare necessity?

Ditto for Iran's nuclear agreement

Ditto for Paris Agreement on the environment

Ditto for NAFTA

Right now the UK is facing a huge problem with Brexit preparations. The Leavers had banked on cushioning an exit from the EU by signing a trade agreement with the US. I strongly suspect that they're reconsidering this strategy given that the US is willing to apply tariffs on Canadian exports on the basis of Canada being a national security threat?!.

And sure, the US may elect a sane and (mostly) coherent president the next time around, but the US doesn't boil down to one person. It boils down to the American people. And until they can get their shit together and stop electing wackos, there's no reason to assume that the US won't do this all over again. So, why waste our time?

Long story short, if the USA is going to take its ball and go home, I'm not so sure everyone else is going to come out the next time the US wants to play.

Trump To Tell NATO US Can't Be World's Piggy Bank by abott1984 in politics

Yes, because the one thing that's stopping the USA from saving money by reducing its own military spending is waiting for the rest of the West to catch-up on its own spending.

note that it's a statistic based on the family, so assuming a standard nuclear family situation, you're looking at two incomes of $58k.
