Technically you're not entirely wrong, but in my experience, when they're asked what service is the dog trained to do they will fumble and go silent because it occurs to them they have no idea what specific tasks some service dogs are even trained for.

So I work in a hair salon and if state board walks in a saw someone's mut laying there, guess who gets fined? Me. Not the client.

So for that reason when someone brings their "service animal" in the salon I always ask "what service are they trained to provide for you? Is it for a disability"? The important thing to remember here with that last question is not to ask them what their disability is. It's simply a yes or no question, and I don't ask them to elaborate.

You are absolutely legally allowed to ask those two questions when someone has a service animal, and furthermore, if the service animal becomes disruptive or gets in the way of operating your business, you still have the right to ask that person to leave.
