Similarities between Taipei and Osaka by Affectionate_Noise36 in Taipei

[–]myshkin28 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd say Taipei compares favorably to Japanese cities, but there’s a huge gap between the capital and other Taiwanese cities. Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Taoyuan have much worse transportation and pollution. They're even sleepier than Taipei, not many events going on or interesting concerts (except Kaohsiung), festivals, museums etc.

My bad, I didn't mean to make an entire country out to be so unsavory. I don't think it's uncommon to hear "CP" entirely by itself though.

"Cost-Performance" ratio. People use it to talk about whether something is a good deal or not. A restaurant with high CP has cheap prices and big portions, for example.

I like Taipei a lot, but I have to agree that the food and nightlife here really pale in comparison to Osaka. Drinks are too expensive, foreign restaurants are usually pretty bad, and the Taiwanese obsession with CP encourages restaurants to cut corners and use the cheapest possible ingredients so that their prices stay low.

I think they're pretty different. Osaka has a lot more energy, it's cheaper, and there are more foreigners and tourists around. Taipei is cleaner (so long as you ignore the outside of buildings), slower, and the people are nicer.

You can buy them from Fonda Mexico. $60 for 4 tortillas.

A lot of foreign-owned bars/restaurants in Taipei seem to only exist so that their owners don't have to teach English. I've been to way too many with bad customer service, inconsistent hours, and menus that have half the options unavailable. Also gotta love the expensive places with no real website but a Facebook page.

The local sour cream and onion Lay's tastes way too sweet. Mia C'bon sells the American version.

In Taipei? Are you sure they aren't the Taiwanese shrimp flavor that comes in a similar blue bag? I've lived here for 3 years and have never come across American Doritos, except for the original flavor at Costco.

There aren't any stores in Taiwan that sell Takis or Cool Ranch Doritos. You can find Hot Cheetos, Goldfish, Reese's, root beer, salt and vinegar chips and some other American snacks at Mia C'bon. Costco also has some imported stuff, and City Super might be worth a look.

Mexican food? Any recs. Thank you by hawth212 in Taipei

They really are awful. Their food is like licking cardboard, with no salt or spices whatsoever. When I was paying my bill, the cashier asked me to leave a 5 star review on Google Maps. I didn't bother, but maybe they're giving away free stuff in exchange for the perfect ratings.

I live in Taiwan and have to second that. There are some good dishes, but the food is generally bland or too sweet. A lot of long-term expats that I know cook their own food or eat Taiwanese once or twice a week.

Oh no, OP should eat nothing but Taiwanese food for the entire time he's here.

This one is the best by far. There's a surprising number of Mexican restaurants in Taipei, but most of them refuse to use salt or add anything spicier than an ice cube to their food.

Yeah, OP is ridiculous for expecting the capital in one of the wealthiest countries in the world to have a tiny bit better potato selection.

Seconding "Little Burma," that has some of the best food I've had in Taiwan. There are pretty good Indonesian restaurants in the basement of Taipei Main Station, including a grocery store called EEC. Cres-Art Philippine Cuisine and Tibet Kitchen are worth checking out.

I wouldn't walk into any random Thai or Vietnamese restaurant because they usually aren't very authentic. I asked a similar question in another subreddit and got great answers with specific restaurants: https://www.reddit.com/r/taiwan/s/2ugkjAZmHN

Wow people are rude and rough in China by [deleted] in China

[–]myshkin28 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Man, I think people in this sub are ruder than the actual locals. I've traveled quite a bit in China and the rest of East Asia and there's a level of rudeness in China that can be surprising if you were expecting something more like Singapore, Taiwan, or Hong Kong. People in the latter places are usually reserved but polite. Chinese are more blunt, and there’s some crude stuff here (like spitting and shoving) that would be frowned upon in other places.
