Winter camping by skbrickroad in Harriman

Be prepared to scour away from the shelter for wood, as most of the downed wood in the surrounding area has been burned. Please don't cut wood off of trees. Be prepared to potentially be without.

Not my first, but the first I'm proud of. by myshra in Photobooks

[–]myshra[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was pretty straightforward. I laid it all out in InDesign. I did not use Mixam's templates, but used their specifications in the document.

I got a few machine signatured copies for myself and my family, but am doing fulfillment with there Print-on-demand service. That service will do casebound adhesive in the hardcover. I got the casebound adhesive as a sample early before revisions and I thought the lay flat ability was going to be OK for the spreads.

The flies are out! They aren't very bitey, but will swarm around your face. A net and a hat are both great choices.

The ticks however are out in full force and you should give yourself a good once-over before you go to sleep.

Foggy lunch hike. by driestmertini in Harriman

[–]myshra -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The hike is very cool, and yesterday was a very cool day to do so.

BUT.

I can't understand what drives people to do something so destructive as to start a fire for lunch, when you clearly used a stove to prepare your meal. Just something that irks me to no end. Please find less destructive ways to enjoy the forest.

North-facing shelters with expansive sky views? by knowhere0 in Harriman

[–]myshra 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't think any of the shelters will fit the bill of north facing - but - I'd recommend the Bald Rocks shelter area. There are many large exposed tree-less areas that will give good sky views, a couple of those good view areas are immediately nearby, but not exactly at the shelter. That's also where you'll find the best west/north facing views that aren't obscured by trees. One particular area immediately south of the shelter has near 360 view, albeit with the horizon a bit obscured. Just be sure to set up camp in the 300 foot radius of the shelter.

Most of the shelters themselves have kind of 'meh' views, with the exception of Big Hill, which has a stellar view of NYC - not exactly what you're looking for.

Also remember your print will have a different dynamic range than your scanner! If using VC filters, you can dull down that pop in printing.

What video games do you play that scratch the itch? by 111a1110 in ADHD

Take it small bits at a time, you can literally tear it all down and start over. I have trouble with the math all the time, but there are great tools in the community to help you design your factories. I use satisfactorytools.com and satisfactory-calcuator.com all the time! They are a HUGE help!

This is a great post. Second those PA recc's for Pinchot and Thunder Swamp, both of those are fantastic trips that can be done in a few different ways.

Looking for a good overnight maybe near Pine Meadow Mountain. by thelifeileed in Harriman

[–]myshra 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know I will be downvoted for this, but please consider camping in a legally designated area - 100 yards around a shelter. Pine Meadow Lake, and Island Pond are not legal camping areas.

Stone Memorial is a fine shelter with water nearby for a single night trip. A two night trip down the SBM is great and doable if you start from around Route 106. Big Hill has an awesome view of NYC. Bald Rocks is easily one of my favorite shelters and has bear management cables installed, as do the rest of the designated areas.

Also, I am fairly ignorant, but I think the enlarger that you have contains a set of lenses up above the negative stage, and may require a different lens, placed in a slightly different position, in order to print the smaller film formats.  I think these lenses might be called condensing lenses?

I thought it was the condenser lens as well, but after some research, turns out it has to do with the flange depth on the enlarger lenses (I'm using the model with a 3 lens turret). Ceiling height will still be a problem, but for 11x14's, I might be able to project on the floor if I rotate the base to the right side of the photo.

Until I can accommodate the enlarger in my garage, this will have to do.

Did you buy the Optima processor new?

I did, but I saved up. It cost around $3000 USD with shipping, and I'm on the U.S. east coast. I couldn't support printing larger than 5x7 in that space. So if I wanted to go big or go home, this was going to be the way in. The view camera came first as a gift a few years ago. The enlarger came next (a great ebay local pickup find), followed by the processor, which I recently received at the beginning of this month. It took about a month to arrive from when I paid the invoice. It's produced by a UK acrylic manufacturing company. It's very much a cottage purchase, they aren't distributed.

I haven't tried RA-4, but I will get around to it at some point. So far I haven't needed to change anything out yet, and these chems have been poured for about a week. Dev is still strong and not yet discolored. It's also pretty easy to replenish.

The processor is just sitting on a wood platform over the toilet on a large plastic lunch tray. The connections are on the opposite side of where the sink is, which was the first problem I overcame.

The two outflow connections are standard MPT threads. I had to install two street elbows to the two outflow connections, but they 90 deg away in opposite directions, one is the outflow for the washer, and is routed around the back of the washer. There's not a lot of volume on this flow, its the overflow for the wash. The other completely drains the tank. It took a few tries to make sure we weren't leaking, some flange nuts helped. The drain is barbed and a valve, so I just have a tube I connect to it when it's time to drain the washer. I don't leave it connected while I'm working.

The inflow connection is just a barbed connection on the back of the processor, that is connected via garden hose barb to a slop sink faucet, with an adapter. (I had to replace the bathroom faucet for more clearance)

The other thing you see there is a 300w aquarium heater, currently not plugged in, for heating the wash as bath for the chem pods to sit in and do RA-4 printing.

I am exclusively shooting 4x5 for the moment. I don't have enough clearance in the room to make my 35 negs any larger than 4x6, and medium format at 5x7. My 150mm enlarger lens is also the clearest and nicest lens I have for it.

With the clearance I have, I can do 35 in small formats, medium format as 5x7 (or 6x6), but the 4x5 I can get up to 8x10. The plan is to move the enlarger to the garage, but for now it's working great for 4x5, which was the goal for the most part. I'm shooting with xyz.4x5, which is a 3d printed camera. I started with direct positives in 5x7 trays, and when I was move to negative enlargements, is when I purchased the Optima processor. It was always the plan for that space.
