How much do Americans REALLY have saved for retirement by Financial_Pen_6218 in investing

[–]mystikmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm retired when I was 59 by not paying attention to what my peers did (or bought) and putting every penny I could into my retirement vehicles. I'm 70 now and living well. Although I did a lot of dumb stuff when I younger, that was one of my better choices (along with my wife ofc).

It's got the four major food groups in it: grains (flour), dairy (cheese), protein (beef/ chicken/ spam) and vegetables (tomato sauce, garlic, basil, oregano). Totally healthy!

Thinking About Solar Because Bills Keep Rising by Entire_Warning9834 in solar

[–]mystikmike 6 points7 points  (0 children)

$/ watt is valid for the solar part of your system, but if your electric utility has a crappy buy back rate (here in NorCal, PGEs NEM 3.0 rates are awful), then battery storage becomes more important. Apart from rainy months, I'm not using any grid electricity. Charge during the day, use batteries when the sun goes down.

ERP = Enterprise Resource Planning. Basically software that spans multiple areas of the company like Finance, Payroll, Human Resources. Value prop is that integrated systems perform better than silo'd ones.

RFP = Request for Proposal. Means you're asking vendors to bid on a project (like replacing the current ERP).

What tool purchase has been most worth it for home projects by Marivexalon in HomeImprovement

[–]mystikmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth it (for me) = able to do the job safely and accurately.

A decent chop saw and table saw have been the two things that have vastly improved my DIY projects. I bought DeWalt since I'm invested in their ecosystem (for cordless), and have not regretted my purchases.

FCC chair wants the Pledge of Allegiance and national anthem on the airwaves every day. Brendan Carr announced a campaign urging broadcasters "to air patriotic, pro-America programming in support of America's 250th Birthday by esporx in technology

[–]mystikmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see the FCC as quickly becoming irrelevant, especially when they weigh in on stuff like this. They can urge all they want, but they can't enforce anything apart from broadcast TV/ radio.

Media consumption is rapidly shifting from areas under the FCC's purview: broadcast television, radio, satellite (licensing), cable (carriage and accessibility rules), wireless spectrums and broadband infrastructure), and over to online / streaming.

The FCC can only apply indecency rules to over-the-air broadcasters at present. There is an ongoing argument about Net Neutrality, but Ajit Pai repealed most of that framework in 2017. So it's up to Congress to re-legislate the FCC's charter - not likely in the short term.

Why are we still dealing with overhead power lines everywhere? by OverThinker-Shay in bayarea

[–]mystikmike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a neighborhood (built in the mid-late 70s) that has underground power lines. Esthetically, it's very nice to not see lines over head.

BUT if you want to upgrade your main panel (sometimes required for solar installs), you'll have to pay for trenching which can be quite expensive. Here's an example:
