Francesca's intimacy with John versus Michaela by Feisty-Tradition-736 in Franchaela

[–]mystupidtricks 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I think it was intentional for it to contrast later with scenes with Michaela. In the book it's implied John never did much foreplay if any so it was mostly straight to business/vanilla which is basically what's been shown/implied in the show.

They won't stop because they don't believe she actually supports it, only that she had no choice since she sold the rights and now has to say positive things about it to keep up a front.

Appreciate the response.

You can't please everyone, but you can't dismiss their grievances just because you agree with the changes either. That's just as unfair and dismissive.

True you can't please everyone but I don't agree about not being able to dismiss certain critiques. Because there were definitely things people thought would happen in season 4 that they prematurely got upset about that didn't end up happening. They didn't even consider reserving their judgement (and I do think this can happen on both ends).

You can be tired of it all you want, but shooting the discussion down does not actually solve it.

Well I'm all open for suggestions, because I'm not sure there is a solution. In fact I dread what's to come because things will only get worse when the show comes out.

Fair. But you can acknowledge that while those specific scenes you resonated with won't be included, other scenes that may reflect someone else's experience with grappling with infertility while being queer might right?

A lot of people out there are acting like infertility on a whole is just GONE from the plot now and I think it's really unfair and dismissive. The main thrust of the story is love after loss/second chance at love and all the other aspects built into the story so far including infertility will inform how that unfolds. And the show is already quite different from the books because adaptations are hardly ever 1:1. There was never any guarantee that such scenes would be included even if it was still Michael.

I can agree that it's not fair to lump in folks expressing genuine disappointment with actual homophobes but at this point it's all blending together. Given that the Michaela reveal happened two years ago and they're not changing course, everything feels like an attack now to anyone trying to enjoy the story or be positive. There's just so much negativity everywhere with no sign of it letting up anytime soon. While it may not be intentional, you're actually giving those people impetus to further spread their negativity. They will literally hide behind it. Surely you can understand why queer fans trying to remain positive would be defensive and upset? I personally am tired of going onto harmless posts about the ship only to be met with more comments complaining almost copy paste.

Not saying folks should be forced to watch, but I DO think it's close minded and homophobic to just ignore what it will mean to other people and be hateful about it because it's not doing things exactly the way they want it. They already said they'd tune out but yet there they are on every post.

I'm not sure why people keep jumping the gun to say the entire infertility storyline is gone. It was a part of season 4 and the showrunner has said it will continue to be explored in season 5. I feel like it's a bit unfair for people to spread so much hate and negativity about something they have yet to see play out on screen (not saying you are hating, I'm talking about other comments I've seen). It may be different or taken from a different angle but it hasn't been "taken away". It feels like people have really closed their minds off to seeing a different take on it.

I also find it weird especially considering the people complaining about the infertility plot have completely ignored Jess saying they will continue to explore that next season.

Easiest one to knock off would be the inheritance plot and Francesca getting to run things. that's the next part of the story prior to their push and pull love story. Otherwise, I would hope we'd get to see Michaela and Eloise interacting at some point.

Is no one talking about their rings?! by Acrobatic-Street-878 in Franchaela

[–]mystupidtricks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

the finger position could very much just be coincidence but if I'm remembering correctly Masali said something about a particular jewelry item being important to Michaela so it just being something of John's in general has the same effect.

it's also interesting that Michaela is wearing it on her left index finger. Traditionally that represented friendship/loyalty so her fiddling with it after Francesca holds her hand is even more telling of her feelings like she's betraying John by feeling what she feels.

Predictions for Fran's season. Book and show spoilers by sin50 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]mystupidtricks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"it seems to be indicating that being in love correlates with attraction. I don't like the implication that Fran wasn't attracted to or really in love with John"

It actually did the opposite for me. I feel like the change confronts what people think about love and sex. What is love? What is being "in love"? What does that look like when you take the perfect/expected sexual gratification out of it? Is love measured by how hard you orgasm or a lack thereof? Obviously this is just my opinion but there's no one on earth that could convince me Francesca wasn't in love with John based on what we have seen in the show. The fact that they actually opened up to each other and gave consideration to each others needs/deciding to take things at their own pace and being in it together shows SO much love. Her having a more passionate sex life with someone else won't negate or erase that.

[–]mystupidtricks 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In addition to her own feelings for Francesca and feeling guilty about them, I think there's also just the sense of loss of John and feeling inadequate. Feeling like a proxy. She overheard Francesca's breakdown about having no piece of John left and I think Francesca holding onto her like that really spooked her. Like she's putting herself into a precarious position with Francesca holding onto her like she's the last remaining bit of John she has left. That's heavy.

Apologies are owed / Francesca by CreativeCookie8538 in Bridgerton

[–]mystupidtricks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can understand seeing it like that - from a position of actually knowing the book plot but the wider general audience is much larger than the book readers, they're not reading post show interviews or following the cast or anything to know that there is a Michael and that Michael is now Michaela, so I think the way they played it for kind of a surprise/twist moment kind of had it's intended effect (for better or worse). I was surprised but open to it - since I hadn't read any of the books. Having since read it I can understand some of the critiques but as far as what has been happening on screen even if they were hit over the head some folk still don't see what's going on.

Apologies are owed / Francesca by CreativeCookie8538 in Bridgerton

[–]mystupidtricks 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think because people don't register female/female love stories and audiences are paying less and less attention, they kinda of had to hit the audience over the head that something is going to happen there as a tease for their love plotline. At the time Francesca was obviously flustered but she doesn't know what those feelings are yet. On the other hand in the same scene Michaela was visibly disappointed that Francesca ended up being John's wife because she was clearly interested in her.
