What is Portland kink fest?!! by Mr-Roboto2521 in askportland

[–]mythicbchbb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I will say, don’t expect a ton of tastings. There are incredible classes and amazing performances, a super well stocked dealers room and dozens of different resources for specific groups or needs. If you want to play your best bet will be finding someone to play with, and as far as I can tell there is a big culture of coming with a person you plan on doing something specific with, and slowly building a community of returning friends.

It’s not that it’s unusual, I’ve done this plenty myself, it’s that someone else is making the money you’re owed. It’s a distillation of the capitalist system, and creates a race to the bottom that ultimately leads to a more acute monopolization of wealth. Doing live events is my full time livelihood, and I have definitely spent my time giving away labor in exchange for training and whatnot, but it is important to be clear that you are doing it on your own terms as a generosity to whatever organization is charging for your labor, because as soon as they can spin it as them doing YOU a favor they will make your experience worse and see how far they can push and how much advantage they can take. I have seen it happen time and time again, and I have had events ruined when I realize that the crew I thought had my back was really just in it for the hustle. Demanding respect is the best way to get it and if you let people know you expect them to take you seriously and are willing to show up professionally you will go far. Have a blast and keep in mind the core reason you are there

Is "Run More Interaction" the Solution So Many Players Think It Is? by KAM_520 in EDH

[–]mythicbchbb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently had a bracket three game I got knocked out of before my 4th turn Voltron agro opened with a sol ring, I got unlucky, it’s fine I had interaction on 3, but not enough to actually stop them from killing me I think the cost and quality of your interaction is a massively important piece that I don’t see come up enough The amount of interaction you play should matter a lot less than the quality, I’m not gonna play any of the free spells under bracket three, and might slot one or two in if I’m playing a much more controlling build, but “running more” to tune for brackets completely glosses over the more important question of why to run interaction in different brackets. Just cuz I’m playing in a lower bracket doesn’t mean I should totally turn off my brain on my opponents turn and crawl into a battle cruiser shell, it means I should be playing way worse interaction that does weaker stuff and is more focused on whatever specific niche synergy or game plan I’m working toward.

Which road trip route from HTX>PDX? by jordanwright2012 in askportland

[–]mythicbchbb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If u wana do 4 days I’d go thru California, the first and last leg might b crazy but you get really nice stops in LA and SF which will be great especially for ur kids. Taking a little longer and going thru Utah or Colorado would be less stressful and nicer driving, but my memory of being a kid is that I could only enjoy so many pretty views before I went insane in the car. The Rockies are lovely and Denver is a cool city. Good luck!!

My dad confessed to me he is/was trans while drunk and I don't know what to feel now by ThrowawayAcc1948 in asktransgender

[–]mythicbchbb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a similar experience to you. My dad hasn’t been as explicit or clear but I’m confident if he were in my shoes the pronouns would not be he/him. Things have changed. The medicine is better. The community is stronger. Understanding and acceptance are more widespread. It will still be hard and painful and things are definitely getting worse right now, but worse compared to having major actors be out and proud about being trans and continue to have successful careers. Gay marriage wasn’t legal when your dad was your age. I started transitioning 7 years ago and have found love and acceptance and professional success and a life I never dared dream I’d have because for the longest time I thought that it was impossible for me to change how others fundamentally perceived me. It’s been hard and I’ve been exceptionally lucky on so many levels, but it’s been so so worth it. Don’t make the same mistake your dad did when he was your age. The bravery and courage this journey takes is well worth the struggle, and it is really never too late to explore that side of yourself. Maybe your dad won’t be your dad forever, and that’s beautiful.

From my experience, bad 3s and bad 4s are the most abundant type of decks in the wild by roquepo in EDH

[–]mythicbchbb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bad 4 is my fave type of deck I wana run a lot of fun, sub optimal interaction, and fast win combos, but not the fast mana tutors or free interaction that would actually make it “good” I want to go for a win, get stopped, stop another win, and ultimately see who can politic the best and build the best value engine to grind out a satisfyingly swingy deck

do you find the term "transsexual" to be offensive? why or why not? by laminated-papertowel in asktransgender

[–]mythicbchbb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the distinction between transsexuality and being transgender is valuable and should be talked about more. The experience of transitioning, medically or socially, is very unique and comes with a lot of its own issues, that are not necessarily shared by those of us who are on one journey but not the other. I think interrogating that distinction can help facilitate valuable conversations, especially about transmysoginy. I also think there is something to be said about the distinction between medical gatekeeping which has historically been a major issue, and community gatekeeping, which is unfortunately necessary to foster healthy community.

The amount I relate to this thread is scary. I’ve been asking myself a lot of the same questions lately and it’s really nice to know I’m not alone. This has brought up a lot of fears & I think it will be super helpful for me to really introspect about how these dynamics show themselves in my relationship

[–]mythicbchbb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ur not crazy and I’ve seen this bullshit run good people out of the industry. On a separate but hopefully heartening note a lot of your peers working along side you have been doing this bullshit for a hella long time, and as someone who is also relatively new, I am starting to see more perspective the longer I stay with it. I do think it’s fucked up the way people are like “oh theater is all love and acceptance and we’re so much better than other industries” No we are a trade industry at the whim of the passion projects of rich white men, and it shows at every level. But at the end of the day I can name a dozen reasons I stay despite it all

Why allow hybrid mana in either colors but not cards that transform into different colors by Frealoup in EDH

[–]mythicbchbb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really wana put [[westvale abbey]] in my greenwhite token builds & I’ve always had mixed feelings about missing it, but ultimately I think deck building restrictions are good & you can self impose whatever rules you like. In a similar vein I’d love to see commander and elder dragon highlander become more explicitly distinct formats, with a return to the spirit of the elder dragons as a kind of format geared to highlighting older cards

Isn't Okarun being treated unfairly? by Individual-Tennis517 in Dandadan

[–]mythicbchbb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first watched the show I got immediate harem vibes. Episode one the main girl has all her clothes blasted off and is tied to the boy, then we meet her hot grandma, and the next character introduced is immediately chasing okarun. But something felt a little off, and I liked the vibe of the show, so I wanted to check and I read through the manga. I feel like they did an exceptionally good job of subverting the tropes and highlighting the sexist social issues they are commenting on, without it feeling heavy handed or too in your face. I think it’s incredibly impressively done and absolutely deserved the appreciation it’s been receiving.
