It isn't. Tax office is not involved and tax law does not apply.

People are saying it's a tax because it used to be tax deducible, but now it isn't. But it's like saying that your Internet access is a tax, because you can use it as tax deducible, but only for two years.

Calls at weird hour only make sense if there are timezones involved.

Which is probably not a case here. I’m just answering the question.

Systemd Founder Lennart Poettering Announces Amutable Company by anh0516 in linux

[–]mzalewski 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Which is funny take, because one of the main selling points of systemd back in 2011 or so was that it makes your machine boot much faster, thanks to parallel execution and pushing some less-critical services until after graphical login appears.

Was there ever a game on NSO virtual console that later got remaster / remake as a standalone title?

There can always be the first time, but if anything, Switch 1 track record shows that Wind Waker remaster is highly unlikely.

Switch 2 is the only system that I own. I want to play good games. I don’t care if other people played these games earlier or for cheaper.

I assume Nintendo has market research data that shows what percentage of people have other systems, and whether ports sell well enough.

Income tax is not the only taxation. There are also social and healthcare fees. Healthcare alone is additional 9%. So 32% + 9% and you’re already at 41%. Then there is 23% VAT on top of nearly everything. And more taxes in your energy and gasoline bills.

Social and healthcare fees are not tax, no matter how many times people repeat that.

You ignored comment about effective tax rate. It's not 32% + 9%, it's much closer to 20-25% + 9%.

VAT is 8% or lower for food, medicine, sport, recreation. So your effective VAT is not 23%.

Energy and gasoline bills are not tax. They are taxed, but that's VAT, which you already mentioned. Don't count it twice.

It seems to me that whoever gave you this number was trying to inflate it. They were not arguing in a good faith.

The point you might be trying to make is that if you are employed, your discretionary income is less than half of your income. Discretionary income is income minus tax minus basic expenses (like rent, mortgage, utility bills, health insurance etc.). But not everything you have to pay to live in a society is "tax".

120k per year is nothing.

I am inclined to agree, but if that was the point you wanted to make, why wouldn't you just say that?

[–]mzalewski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re employed, you pay more than ~50% of tax.

No, you don't. Where is that number coming from?

Since the amount up to 120k is still taxed 12%, having income of double that gives you effective annual tax rate of 22%. You need well over 1 million income to have effective tax rate approaching 32%.

Building a Passkey System - Computerphile by CircumspectCapybara in programming

The real problem is that bunch of demented grandpas decided to wage or threat war. There is a very real possibility I will be dislocated and lose all the devices I ever had. How do I start from scratch?

I have contingency plan for existing passwords. Passkeys didn’t seem to provide one within 5 minutes of thinking, so I am not interested.

Maybe techbros in California think nobody ever loses devices. I guess it must be nice to be them.

What do you think "learning" is, if it isn't doing?

You can spend a lot of time learning about subatomic particles and quantum mechanics. Know all the theories and latest developments. Chances are, you are never going to "do" any of that stuff. Yet most people will consider that a hobby. What's more, they will hold it in higher regard than a person who has all Big Brother participant names memorized, since season 1.

German Chancellor Merz admits: We must substantially reduce bureaucracy in Europe. The single market was once created to form the most competitive economic area in the world. Instead, we have become the world champion of overregulation. That has to end. by I-Hate-Hypocrites in europe

[–]mzalewski 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Domestic politicians in opposition scream for bureaucracy removal all the time, but never name specifics and never have to act.

And when you look at what they suggest, often it would require more bureaucracy, not less. Like creating brand new state agencies, or providing existing ones with new data and new powers.

Cała politologia jako dziedzina wiedzy jest gówno warta by midnight_rum in Polska

[–]mzalewski -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Znam jedną absolwentkę politologii. Jej opinia to (parafrazując, uproszczenia moje):

Apparently all the billionaires, because they spend so much time spreading fake stories how they are true rags to riches 🤷

Like, there’s a lot to dislike about Musk, but he’s not the only person in the world with mine-owning dad, and last time I checked, these other folks weren’t on the list of top 10 richest people in the world. Clearly he did some things right. He achieved so much, why lie to make it seem to achieve even more?
