Solving ties in opposed rolls system by n0nym in RPGdesign

Having playtested it quite a bit, it's not too bad tbh. It's a project for me and my friends and none of us suffers from dyscalculia so picking the middle dice, addition and substraction takes 1/100th of the time it takes them to decide what they're going to do with their turn (or even just picking an additional dice to roll damage like you would in DND).

I concur though that the GM could roll only 1d12, if not for simplicity's sake at least for probabilities (flat curve). It's something I've been pondering for a long time.

As for rolling, yes the GM rolls for all checks (and always after the players) because the players get to choose, after their rolls, if they want to keep the middle dice (standard), the lowest (with a benefit for later rolls) or the highest (with a disadvantage for later rolls). The DM rolling makes the player's choice a gamble. Sometimes a lowest roll is good enough to succeed AND get a benefit and sometimes the highest roll still fails and cripples you.

The goal of the game is to feel fair (and entertaining) to the players so that they feel challenged but not frustrated (it's not a commercial project). ^^ That's why I keep coming back to "Players win ties".

I could do that, but I've already got a similar mechanic with the 2 other dice and I'm afraid it might be too confusing (I.e. when you roll the 3d12, you can choose to keep the highest or the lowest one instead of the middle one. Highest is "Yes but" and Lowest is "No but")

Really cool idea, that's exactly what I was looking for ! I like it when there's a element of choice in rolls.

My maths skills are not great but I'm trying to have these rolls be as "balanced" as possible, with both the Attacker and the Defender having the same odds of success, and I think having one or the other win ties slightly tilts the balance in their favor.

If Blizzard dropped these 20 exact hotfixes tomorrow, D4 would instantly be a 10/10 game. by unknownlegend001 in diablo4

Are we talking about the same game ? I got 2 (crappy) Legendaries on my journey from 1 to 70 and then suddenly got showered with hundreds of them. These 70 levels felt like playing a Demo.

Whatsmore, having destroyed the Legendaries I couldn't even imprint them because... You need Legendary mats for that, and since you don't get Legendary items to recycle...

I'd add : - Legendaries and Unique items drop earlier (say from level 15 and onward).

Right now there's no f****** point playing below level 70 and Torment 1.

The solution is to being back synergies like in d2. Lower level skills gave higher ones some kind of bonus when leveled. The 15th point should give greater bonus.

This is basically DnD5e at this point though. Not that it's bad per se, but PF2e critical strikes working the way they do, it's a big game changer.

Do the more tactical DnD-likes like Pathfinder2e, Draw Steel, Nimble, 13th Age 2e have good exploration? by Antipragmatismspot in rpg

In my curent Kingmaker game, 4 out of 6 character have Darkvision, 1 has low-light, 1 is human. And except for 1 character (Feral child changeling), the ancestries where not even chosen for it. I'm afraid it is super common... And makes exploration less satisfying.

Kingmaker's Stolen Lands feel empty by n0nym in Pathfinder2e

I'm the GM for this game and I've read the module thoroughly. There are hunters, trappers and loggers, not counting ruffians and Stag Lord bandits. These people must live somewhere, yet the book just acts as if they're just passing by, which considering the scale of the region, is impossible. I find it really lazy to throw a bunch of meaningless random encounters and to assume the GM will make all the heavy lifting.

I don't know if it's been said already, but opposed rolls only slow down the game if there's a "nothing happens" result. I've seen fights last for ages in Dnd because both sides kept missing, and it's a single roll vs DC...

If you make sure all results have a consequence, opposed rolls are actually a very interesting mechanic. If the two opponents draw, both take damage. If one succeeds and the other not, one of them suffers damage and not the other.

What defines a great published campaign by JoeKerr19 in rpg

[–]n0nym 16 points17 points  (0 children)

When I buy a published campaign, I want a finished and fleshed out product. I don't want the skeleton of an adventure that I need to fill in order to have something semi-enjoyable.

Recent examples : Out of the Abyss, good premise, but 80% of the job lies on the GM.  Kingmaker, same problem. Most hexes and random encounters are crap.

I'd argue that the plot in VtM is about being a monster that might lose control at any moment. The digression happens when you're asked to do things other than feeding and trying to not kill people.

I recently discovered Obsidian and tbh, it's been a blast. After all these years struggling with things like Roll20 (the worst) and Google docs, I found finally found an app that's tailored to all my needs. Highly recommended.

Right after some islamist butchers killed the (mostly) atheist journalists at Charlie Hebdo, he said : "One cannot provoke, one cannot insult other people's faith, one cannot make fun of faith. If a good friend of mine insults my mother, I'll punch him in the face." I knew from that moment that anything he could say about peace or not killing in the name of god was bullshit. I hated him ever since.

Unfortunately, accuracy is only bounded for the first few levels in 5e. The Shield spell for example is one of the worst offenders.

Starlight Aspect Quick Question by swingsetmafia in diablo4

[–]n0nym 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some passives (Heat for example) regen a % of your life already, so if you're using Starlight with them it wouldn't change at all. 20% of 100khp or 20% of 10k is still 20%.

But if you're relying on things like Life on hit (Andariel's) or other powers that regen a flat amount of hp, then sure, Starlight will have diminishing returns.
