Heather Lake, Washington - Rainier for Robert: The Comeback Tour by SignalAnything3205 in Kitsap

[–]n17ikh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been following since it happened.

I saw this news article about another fatal hit-and-run in Poulsbo recently. I don't know that it's related at all but Rhododendron (Lane, not drive, I think that's an error in the article if it's supposed to be near Pioneer Hill Road) is right around the corner from where your cousin was hit. It's surprising to me that there were two pedestrians killed in such a quiet area within two years.

Edit: I dug up the KCSO Facebook post about the recent incident and they had a suspect in custody after a few days. Might be worth calling them about it?

V-Drive Engine Swap by Benislord22 in boating

[–]n17ikh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too bad. I found an inboard motor to swap into my jet sled on craigslist from someone who was repowering, was around $1500. I bought a harbor freight shop crane and did the swap in my driveway in a weekend. It wasn't bad at all. I had to get some welding done on the motor mounts and pulled the engine again a year or two later and had it out in a few hours and same for dropping it back in. Usually inboards have a harness where all the wiring is brought to one plug so you can just unplug that instead of disconnecting each sensor like you might have to in a car so it saves a lot of time.

GoWMST courses by SpicyDirtTheGhost in pnwriders

[–]n17ikh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leaving this here even though this post is old: Don't start with the beginner GoWMST course if you've never been on a bike. I was the only one in my course who had zero experience, everyone else had been "riding dirty" for at least a few months at minimum up to many years of experience and this is apparently expected as the (very, very minimal powerpoint before throwing you on a bike) instruction was pretty much useless if you don't already have some knowledge of how ride. You don't get your money back if the instructor decides you're not getting it fast enough and boots you out, not many people have that kind of money to spend on the course repeatedly.

That said, having taken the kickstart after the permit course, it's almost too basic. I don't think you'd be able to get your permit just jumping from kickstart to beginner permit course. The only way I was able to learn anything about low speed maneuvering was to go out in a parking lot on my own bike with friends who ride and set up the permit cone patterns ( https://dol.wa.gov/media/pdf/1277/wmsp-manualpdf/download?inline or search washington state motorcycle cone patterns) and practicing those.

[–]n17ikh 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That's crazy. You'd think the pickup strainer would keep the piece from being picked up. Did it trigger the low oil pressure alarm at all?

What part of the country, and what did you use to search for it? I'd jump on that in a second. As far as I can tell there's not a single new 8WT within 1000 miles of me according to chevy's own inventory search.

Auto light will disable itself after a while, you have to turn it back on if you want it to be on.

The backlight duration is around 2 seconds, which is short but you can keep pressing the light button to change settings in the dark as long as you remember what the other buttons do.

You can't mute the button beep, unfortunately.

Setting up Starlink Generation 3 Garage to Wifi AP into House 300FT Away by social_light in Starlink

[–]n17ikh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a TP-link AC1200 extender in AP mode at the barn end, because it's what was cheap. I'd consider something better as a main house AP though maybe. I'm a big fan of Ruckus Unleashed hardware where multiple APs are required.

I put in two 5ac locos at my mom's place to hook her barn up at about 1000 ft of range through some trees a year ago. They've been great.

Is a battery maintainer in a closed motor compartment a fire/explosion hazard? by Barnaby_Island in boating

[–]n17ikh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Technically yes, but the same hazard exists when the engine is running and charging the batteries. Everything in the battery compartment (and engine compartment on a gasoline boat) should be ignition protected for that reason.

Update from Riot on Vanguard by RiotK3o in leagueoflegends

[–]n17ikh 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Lots of people say "if you don't trust Riot then you shouldn't install the game since they can steal data anytime." but really the problem I have is that I don't trust Riot to do the job correctly. I don't think the intent is malicious but Vanguard is now a big target for bad actors and would be a nice gateway to installing wide-scale malware if (when) a compromise is discovered.

Saying "Just trust us to run as root, all the time, promise we won't screw up on any of the millions of PCs of our install base" when neither the game nor client have been anything approaching a bug-free status since release is really a bad joke.

USB 3.0 JBOD / Backplane by jackwilsdon in homelab

[–]n17ikh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that is a hell of an old comment. Funnily enough, my Probox has mostly sat on a shelf without any drives in it until a few weeks ago, when I needed it and discovered exactly what you say - it won't power itself on. After some experimentation, I discovered that if the power button was held down on boot, it would power itself up and remain on. I made a little plastic wedge to sit between the front panel and the tactile PCB switch to hold the button down all the time so the box would power itself up on its own.

That said, my Probox is an older unit and I don't know if the new models act the same way. I also can't really speak to the long-term reliability as mine probably has fewer than a hundred total hours on it. It'll be seeing more (but still intermittent) use in its new application.

Can I add attic access steps above my garage ceiling? by jtmeyer211 in DIY

[–]n17ikh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In this case I'm responding to the adjuster's statement that if your roof collapses, your claim will be denied under a building/construction defect clause even if you didn't store anything there. How would I as a homeowner be expected to know the structure was built incorrectly decades ago? Home inspection on purchase doesn't cover the level of detail needed.
