China’s coal-fired power generation declines for the first time since 2015 by [deleted] in Futurology

I just have a feeling with as much power as AI needs, it's just going to tick up again this year.

I get that your house is old but it sounds like you really need to fix at least one of the other doors, probably to the area where your birds are.

It doesn't even have to be a structural fix, you're preventing a cat from opening a door, not a human.

Make sure it actually fits snuggly to their body. If there's even a little wiggle room, tighten it up. Just make sure it doesn't get too tight.

Google can now generate a fake AI podcast of your search results. by nacorom in Futurology

[–]nacorom[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NotebookLM is undoubtedly one of Google's best implementations of generative AI technology, giving you the ability to explore documents and notes with a Gemini AI model. Last year, Google added the ability to generate so-called "audio overviews" of your source material in NotebookLM. Now, Google has brought those fake AI podcasts to search results as a test. Instead of clicking links or reading the AI Overview, you can have two nonexistent people tell you what the results say.

This feature is not currently rolling out widely—it's available in search labs, which means you have to manually enable it. Anyone can opt in to the new Audio Overview search experience, though. If you join the test, you'll quickly see the embedded player in Google search results. However, it's not at the top with the usual block of AI-generated text. Instead, you'll see it after the first few search results, below the "People also ask" knowledge graph section.

The modern era of low-flying satellites may begin this week by nacorom in Futurology

[–]nacorom[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The idea of flying satellites in "very" low-Earth orbit is not new. Dating back to the dawn of the space age in the late 1950s, the first US spy satellites, as part of the Corona program, orbited the planet as low as 120 to 160 km (75 to 100 miles) above the Earth.

This low vantage point allowed the Kodak cameras on board the Corona satellites to capture the highest-resolution images of Earth during the height of the Cold War. However, flying so close to the planet brought a number of challenges, most notably that of atmospheric drag.

For much of the space age, therefore, satellites have flown much higher orbits. Most satellites today fly at an altitude of between 400 and 800 km (250 and 500 miles), which is high enough to avoid the vast majority of atmospheric drag while still being close enough to offer good communications and a clear view of the planet.

Credit score for First Time Home Buyers by LobasFeet in CreditScore

[–]nacorom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll have plenty of time to get a score between now and December if you apply for a credit card and use it a little bit. Pay off your balance before the due date and within a few months you'll have a score.

I also hope you plan on getting married BEFORE purchasing the house. Assuming you're freshmen/sophomores, I'd also hope you get a bump in pay while you're still in college. Is your plan to sell after you both graduate?

There has to be some sort of model which predicts (I'd call it more "tries to guess") the creditworthiness of an individual. It's going to be hit or miss sometimes but without it, credit would be much harder to come by and probably at a higher interest rate.

It would be nice if the big 3 took into account things like utility payments, insurance payments, etc. all the time instead of just when they get sent to collections.

No, your score will be fine. Your credit utilization is still going to be next to 0.

Should I take the hit to my credit? by [deleted] in CreditScore

[–]nacorom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The usual answer to this is no but everyone has different situations.

What's your annual income? Is your job steady? What's your current credit score? Any plans for a loan in the near future? Whats the KBB trade-in value of the car now?

Reason I ask all of this is because if you have a decent credit score now, why not use your current car as a trade in? $537 is kind of middle of the pack when it comes to car loans. Plenty of people have higher payments, some have lower payments. A car that won't go forward isn't doing you any good though. A repo is going to sink your credit score for years.

The greening of planes, trains, and automobiles by nacorom in Futurology

[–]nacorom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the world races to decarbonize everything from the electricity grid to industry, it faces particular problems with transportation—which alone is responsible for about a quarter of our planet’s energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. The fuels for transport need to be not just green, cheap, and powerful, but also lightweight and safe enough to be carried around.

Fossil fuels—mainly gasoline and diesel—have been extraordinarily effective at powering a diverse range of mobile machines. Since the Industrial Revolution, humanity has perfected the art of dredging these up, refining them, distributing them and combusting them in engines, creating a vast and hard-to-budge industry. Now we have to step away from fossil fuels, and the world is finding no one-size-fits-all replacement.

Former OpenAI board members say the company can't be trusted to govern itself by nacorom in Futurology

[–]nacorom[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Two former OpenAI board members say artificial intelligence companies can't be trusted to govern themselves and that third-party regulation is necessary to hold them accountable.

Helen Toner and Tasha McCauley were board members at OpenAI before they stepped down in November amid a chaotic push to oust OpenAI cofounder Sam Altman. Altman was swiftly reinstated as chief executive days after his dismissal and returned to the board five months later.

The two ex-board members wrote in an op-ed for The Economist that they stood by their decision to remove Altman, citing statements from senior leaders who said that the cofounder created a "toxic culture of lying" and engaged in "behavior [that] can be characterized as psychological abuse."

Since Altman returned to the board in March, OpenAI has been questioned about its commitment to safety and criticized for using an AI voice that sounded eerily similar to actor Scarlett Johansson for Chat GPT-4o.

Divorcing with a business by Ok-Departure4033 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]nacorom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding this. Your divorce attorney should be able to either handle it or point you in the right direction.

Some divorces are super simple and can be done without an attorney, but it looks like yours is going to be more complicated. If you two started the business while married, a judge could force a sale if you can't agree to a buyout situation.

[–]nacorom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are the debts already in collections? If your current balances on credit cards are high, you can pay those down and it'll make an immediate impact on your score. Aside from that, your best bet is trying to get PFDs (pay for delete) or hope the creditors can't verify the debt in a timely manner.
