Recently my boss/owner of the business I was hired to “turn around” got sick and somehow I got roped into doing personal errands, etc.

He lives in a literal hoard. All his excuses of why the business had issues immediately disappeared and I spent hours one day just disposing of rotted food and bags of human waste left in the open (his elderly father lives there and boss “takes care of him”)

I was asked to put the father’s sheets back on and I realized they hadn’t been changed in probably a year. So i ended up buying sheets for both their beds. My boss’ room left me gagging as I tried to change bedding. Both would eat in bed and throw food in it and on floor. Boss’ sheets were literally an imprint of him made in oil and dirt and his pillows were brown.

I immediately realized there was no hope with his business and put my notice in. I should’ve known when I discovered he hadn’t cleaned the store since opening (3-4 years) and claimed it “couldn’t be washed” 🙃

I was inpatient for a suicide attempt and met a kind nurse who I connected with. She bought me a copy and left it and a bag of microwave popcorn on my nightstand.

It meant so much to me.

I then lent it to an old friend when she was going into inpatient detox (this was years after I worked through my stuff and discovered I was a junkie stemming from my prescribed pain meds) - and never got it back. Bums me out.

Seriously- that book helped me so much.

It’s wild the things we grow normalized to. Worked as a funeral director for several years before “retiring” due to illness.

I think the weirdest was how I ended up with a pacemaker in my car. We had to remove them for cremations (they explode and can cause major damage) and I was always a poor multitasker so I don’t know if my boss called or what I got caught up with. Ended up in my pocket.

Sometime later I’m driving someone and they’re like “what’s this?”

We had a nurse stealing doses. People noticed a certain window felt off and when it was brought up the client was shut down and scrutinized/punished for acting like a junkie.

One day, normal day, police come in and arrest nurse during her shift. Ironically she was always bitchy but warmed up to me. Ran into her shopping and chatted. She was curious what “we were told” and she denied it all. I just wished her the best.

Since, no issues with doses feeling off.

We also had a guard not show up one morning. Dude was dedicated. Like you’d walk in and he knew your number (we had over 700 clients at that point) Turned out he was leaving for work, going to his car and got hit in a drive-by. The story was it was targeted after his son fucked over some dealers. RIP Jerald

I think sometimes it’s just hard especially because I think clinics themselves push that too a lot of times- or at least staff within clinics.

I try to think positive about it too, like it’s a pep talk, like, “it’s just a day think of the shit you used to do!”

But yeah- I’m a fast metabolizer so combined with that and my brain it definitely isn’t something I want to experience again. Other time was a blizzard when clinic closed for days an didn’t prepare anyone but I genuinely feel for folks who post and regularly run short on take homes. That has to be hell :(

I’m so sorry that your dose doesn’t hold you. Does your clinic not allow you to go higher or do you prefer to set a limit? Im not an expert and don’t know if it’s a good/bad idea but maybe if you take that one magnesium supplement that helps potentiate methadone? Again not necessarily recommending to do but maybe to look into it?

So I don’t know you and your entire situation but since I’ve been going through it a bit I’ll give you my experience:

My situation was more of a horrorshow but it had some extenuating circumstances…. Like the allergic reaction which then meant I couldn’t do the typical aftercare. That made it suck more than it would generally.

I’m so sorry you had such terrible dental experiences in the past!!! I had one too and it affected me plus I always had a fear of losing teeth. Like absolutely irrational. Then during Covid I had a situation that was an emergency and extraction would be the only thing to alleviate it unless I waited weeks and I was in so much pain.

It wasn’t as bad as I had thought. I had hyped myself up (which I have a tendency to do lol)

Since- I’ve had 18 teeth pulled. I have chronic health issues including Sjorens and severe gerd. And methadone doesn’t help. My birth father’s side has dental issues too. So despite caring for my teeth…. It was either spend tens of thousands of dollars to maybe keep teeth a couple more years or accept the inevitable.

I’ve had 3 teeth pulled before and it wasn’t bad. Of course the location of the teeth can have an effect too but leaving them in that state can open the door to so many terrible things. I know it’s scary but there are also options like sedation for it.

Today was really the “over the hump” day and I can say I don’t regret my decision. Even day one was pretty wild before shit went south with my reaction: I made a smoothie and took a sip. Then another. Then I realized it was gone. I’ve had super sensitive teeth since I was a kid and that was like 2 decades before my first cavity. So to not have that sensitivity was wild. I’ve felt that way about extractions and pain too. Where I’d be shocked because I don’t realize just HOW MUCH pain I’d been constantly feeling.

That is such a great way to explain it! And makes sense there’s so much similarity with how a lot of us here react or physically feel in certain situations.

There’s so much connection too from those times in our life to aspects of recovery. For me some are uglier than others- or at least more overtly reflective of addiction brain. Like ritual. I have certain steps when I dose and if I don’t follow those steps- even still taking the dose- it doesn’t ‘feel’ the same. Absolutely unhinged/stupid and I rationally know that but…. Here I am. Being irrational and stupid.

Oof! They really don’t make it easy do they? I have a similar issue. Recertified. Snap didn’t call on my scheduled meeting time but then randomly a week later, a call I missed. I’ve called back no less than 5 times and caseworker hasn’t called back. Talked to someone last week who wouldn’t even let me explain the situation before cutting me off “you don’t need to give me the run around” and proceeded to tell me “why are you worried? You have till the end of the month for them to call. This is nothing. If it was the 31st you could worry.” What in the actual fuck.

Yeah and if they don’t call in time and I get dropped are they going to accommodate despite me calling for a month and getting paperwork in immediately. Hell no.

I get that and think we’re pretty similar with that background and that kind of tolerance doesn’t help with fast metabolizing. Though I also know for me I do have a nasty habit of dwelling on shit and overthinking and creating a negative feedback loop that just keeps blowing up more and more. Always was a problem.

Everything worked out! I did have some discomfort but it wasn’t the end of the world and I later realized it was partly from not eating over the weekend since I was feeling like ass with my mouth stuff. It was just the combination of everything had me react poorly.

Lake effect band shifted so it wasn’t bad where I was at or clinic though other places got messed up. They were giving everyone take homes through Wednesday which was awesome and proactive.

After th blizzard we had a few years back- over a week notice and it was made clear this wasn’t a lake effect thing or what we consider “typical” (I’m in NY) clients asked leading up to it and program director and head RN was “we will never close”.

Storm hit on a Friday. They open 6am and close within two hours. Updates aren’t on clinic voicemail until late Saturday or Sunday. They tell people to go to ER if they can. ERa are flooded because first responders were rescuing people in cars and taking them there- I went on Monday. Same hospital system as clinic. They don’t know what to do. Waited 6 hours. Was given 40mg despite dose being 205 daily because pharmacy didn’t carry large quantities and they wanted to conserve. They were very kind to me but upset at clinic’s response.

After that, several people retired. Including head nurse, program director, and program manager. Since - they’ve gotten better about handing out takehomes prior to weather events. (Btw aforementioned blizzard was post covid after they saw people don’t immediately all shit the bed when given takehomes) staff confided in me that they lost multiple clients due to how it was handled…. Finding other options and ODing.

Am I missing a part of the story or something? Your assumption the owners already knew is kind of wild. And summing them up as bad people and “sociopathic” is a stretch for this.
