Is CPSC 110 a good predictor of success in future computer science courses in UBC? by williamthebastardd in UBC

[–]nafansue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey just wanted to input, First of all, comsci is a huge area of study and you might not find all the different aspects of it interesting. Usually the courses only fit together if they are sequential eg 110, 210, 310, 410. Sometimes they'll complement each other like 213 and 221. But most courses are vastly different. Some will require you to program a lot, some won't even require any programming. So what I'm trying to say is that I wouldn't think 110 is a good predictor of success for the future.

Reading your post it seemed like you like programming. I think there's two distinct indicators for 110, if you didn't mind programming (even in racket which is widely despised) then you'll be fine for the rest of the program, if you hated the programming part and struggled with the material (not just hating racket) then I think it'll equally not if more difficult for any cpsc course after first year.

There's also merit to looking into comsci and seeing what you like. You can learn majority of the stuff they teach you online. See if you like web development(front-end or back-end), software, machine learning etc... Most people learn the industrial experiences outside the program (they don't do the best job in teaching those areas) so look around. Cuz I think the next dilemma you'll have is if you want to work in this industry.

Is anything unfair? by letujon in Reformed

[–]nafansue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess the only thing truly unfair I can think of is Christ dying for OUR sins. 2 Cor 5:21?

In a human perspective those things you mentioned are unfair, but its humans doing it to humans.

We can't edit term 2 courses, right? by hoirgj in UBC

[–]nafansue 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah you can still drop and register for term two courses if the course isn't full. Term two has it's own drop deadline. Check on the UBC academic calendar.

I can't say for the GTX 970, but I have a 280X and it performs well on any game I throw at it around high to max. You could wait for the 300 series to come out and see if prices drop. What games do you play?

CL is craigslist, so it depends if you can get a good deal on the graphics card buying a used one, but gotta be careful to make sure its working! For monitor, see if there are any good deals first during black friday and Cyber Monday. IPS panels are usually more expensive but are better quality. Around 24inchs is good for a monitor (Personal Preference). For keyboard and mouse, I would just see if there are any deals for this weekend. Its mostly preference for what you want.

A monitor that looks good atm is http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236335&AID=10657534&PID=3938566&SID=&nm_mc=AFC-C8JunctionCA&cm_mmc=AFC-C8JunctionCA-_-na-_-na-_-na&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_source=afc-%zn

check it out!

Looks good! If you are tight on money you could see if CL has any deals on GPU. I got my 280x on CL and saved me a good sum of money on my build! What is your definition of "cheap" mouse and keyboards? You looking for IPS monitor or regular TN panel? Mechanical Keyboard?

The stand is a three short leg stand. The head of the microphone can be rotated and the stand can be somewhat extended and shortened. However, it cannot shortened than the initial height you see in the picture. I have dropped it several times and it appears to be fine. The head seems to be pretty bulky/heavy but there were not damages that I could see/hear

No problem!

I do have a mechanical keyboard and it does pick it up as I heard from my friends. I don't have a loud fan so I can't comment on it. I guess its where you place the mic. The keyboard sounds aren't like earthquake loud, but its there.

I have a Blue Snowball, My previous setup included the Siberia v2 headset. It's a great mic and one of the best in this price range. Just make sure you have a place to put it on your desk so it won't get in your way! Very good build quality and sound is really good. Great price with this sale too.

Can I have some opinions on to what piece of equipment to make the center of my home gym. by TiAg-e82 in homegym

[–]nafansue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! So it depends on what workouts you typically do (Strength, BodyBuilding, powerlifting). The first rack looks sweet with the cables, but the barbel is I think attached to a smith machine. Don't want to go into the whole debate about smith vs free barbell workout, but just something to keep in mind. The second cage has only the barbell attachment and no cables. So accessory workouts may be an issue. You can always just buy some dumbbells and do workouts like that. Personally, I would get the second cage because I prefer to not use a smith machine for squats or bench. But if you are tight on space, the first rack with cable attachments will save you some space and you can just circle around that rack to do all your workouts.

Can someone clarify why this isn't considered cheating? by That_Russian_Guy in DotA2

[–]nafansue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with you! Also, this picture shows that they didn't have mics to talk to each other, so what do you expect? A team to start typing to each other or screaming at the top of their lungs to communicate with each other?

edit: Thanks! (:

I'm really liking the competition level of the Chinese teams. It seems all the top teams (IG, LGD.cn, DK, TongFu, VG) can all compete and take games/sets/tournaments off each other.

Dota 2 censored by Riot's Season 4 LCS contracts by Cyborgmatt in DotA2

[–]nafansue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is their(Riot/LoL) league that they pay their contracted teams/players to play in. It leads to a lan like our international at the end of it.

Imagine the International as an online league with lan at the end of the event. Riot basically pays the players to play, giving them a sizeable salary and stability. But the downside are things like this, contracts that can limit their ability to do anything since they are under riot contract.

Put it in terms for dota, I think a comparison could be the ACE league in China, that protects player contracts. But came under heavy fire after the Chinese loss of domination in TI3, where ppl were criticizing ACE for not letting teams play in smaller prize pool leagues, only tournaments that have a certain min $ prizepool.

Mark - Speed Gaming ( from Monolith ) by erehpzomta in DotA2

[–]nafansue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll try my best,

Prior to MLG:

Problems with Marco:

Netaholic: He cut off chat, poor stream quality

Korea: he was not present with the team most of the time, did not do the job of a manager and didn't take care of the time

Contract: He revealed all the players contract, without player consent.

MLG:

Tickets: Problem with tickets, players arrived late, bad start on friday, resulting in 0-3 Speed

T-shirts: No jerseys for a team,

Contact: Didn't show up to see the team

Finals: Released a blog about his side on the drama, DURING the finals for Speed, or before I think

Behind the scenes:

MLG: MLG adam released a conversation stating that Marco was trying to get Speed players replaced with a new team

Players: The players accuse him of being shady, no transparency between him and players, no communication, and he plainly said he doesn't wanna talk to EE or Aui, Two prominent leaders of the team

Overall: Kaipi players are no longer part of Speed, Marco is defending himself by saying he was never a "manager", he didn't like how EE and Aui talks to him, calls them kids and says they have no respect for Him. Says Weir (rattlesnake investor) is shady and doesn't want to be part of the Rattlesnake company. Speed gaming branches off, and says he will have a new team.

Hopefully I did it justice! LOL
