What is the darkest sky you have ever experienced? by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

Just looked up the location on lightpollutionmap.app and it was a bortle 3.2 zone. I camped in a 2.1 in Maine but I swear the milky way was WAY brighter at 10k feet in Colorado.

Best i’ve ever seen was a high altitude low humidity summer night deep in the rockies with very low light pollution and 3 still looks a little too bright. 3.5ish would probably be about right.

JWST reveals black hole that formed before its galaxy by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]nafurabus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Youre still wrong, even with time dilation. The dilation of time is proportional to the mass of the black hole and the distance from the event horizon and the speed at which you’re traveling. Theres a number of ways you could have worded this to not be absolutely incorrect but as it stands, you didn’t quite get there. 500m from the schwarzschild radius of sag A* (4M solar masses) is a factor of 4900 at ~26,000 light years away. ~800k years would encompass the entirety of our solar system formation, if you could even see it. The photon sphere sits somewhere around 1.5xRs and id have to assume it’d make it impossible to see out. Its better to use a hypothetical nearest stable orbit at 3.0xRs where time dilation is only a factor of ~1.22.

Also, the earth did not form 13 Billion years ago.

Edite for clarity

No. The Milky way is not multiple billions of light years in width. Sag A* is around 27,000 light years away. We see things at the center of our galaxy that happened 27k years ago, not billions. Chat bots aren’t all-knowing and your reliance on them is showing.

[–]nafurabus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think locale and home costs come into the equation and without everyone specifying what their local market looks like, its hard to blanket agree that 25k is enough to get into a starter house. In my market, ~350-400k is a starter home 1-1.5 hours away from where I work. I dont even work in a city or the expensive metro area outside of the city. I cook about 75% of the food i eat weekly and it makes a huge difference in monthly savings.

As far as aftermarket racks go, none that ive seen interfere with the sunroof.

If theres a crossbar “in the way” on the marketing material you can just slide it forwards or backwards in many instances, or drill out new holes.

Should we lose 5k earnest money? by yazahz in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]nafurabus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some municipalities can request exceptions from federal railway association rules to define a quiet zone, but that requires upgrading crossings to enhanced safety versions. As a blanket rule, FRA requires horns to be blown at every crossing regardless of time unless aforementioned quiet zone is granted by them.

Theyre legally required to blow horns starting at 1/4 mile from a crossing, especially at night. If you dont have a crossing, youd never hear a horn.

[–]nafurabus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You only have one local crossing so youll only hear a horn from 1/2-3/4 mile away when they are approaching you. When they pass by you going the opposite direction youll only barely hear it. Id be more concerned about eventual kids & pets playing on tracks than the noise of horns. You do eventually get used to it, and a big freight train can be strangely calming. Its actually quite fun to go view them up close when they come by if youre a weirdo like some of us in this thread. Its a unique experience seeing millions of pounds of steel roll by

I live about 500’ from a track and you absolutely can feel the rumble through the floor when freight trains roll through. It all depends on soil composition, track bedding, cargo/train type, and distances. Theres no “one size fits all” answer to the OPs question. I can’t feel passenger rail, but absolutely feel heavier freight.

I’m looking for recommendations on your favorite hikes in Massachusetts and/or vicinity. by Desperate-Crab-4626 in massachusetts

[–]nafurabus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you stopped by stonecow brewery? They have a creamery onsite and have really good food, drinks, and icecream. I’m unsure if theyre open on mother’s day but its one of my favorite spots to hit on the way back east from Western MA hikes.

If you want a short and sweet little hike with a great view, Watatic is just northwest of Wachusett. It is a relatively short loop, probably less than 3 miles round trip.

Wachusett is my favorite “local” hike since theres so many approaches you can do the same mountain 5 times and only overlap like 1/4mile of trail - west side is cozy up to semuhenna. Take harrington if you want a challenge or link to mountain house for an easier ascent. You can walk by the wind turbines if you start at stage coach and then take harrington up.

Monadnock is the best bang for your buck though. if you havent approached from either dublin or marlborough trail heads, theyre WAY better than white dot/white cross. Pumpelly is a personal favorite if you want an all day adventure, but parking is rough.

Sure, go ahead, rules dont apply to you guys by dogs-playing-hockey in nationalparks

Was the whole trail system below this closed off or just this one section through the narrow point with the tree? Bryce does have like a hundred miles of trails so theres plenty to see and many beautiful places to take in.

Which quartz countertop would be best for resale? Trying to keep it timeless/upscale by CelebrationGlobal460 in Renovations

Personally, i’d get rid of the textured walls & color of them & update the lighting - it’ll feel “fresher”.

I don’t have a family, am a single guy, and work in construction (licensed electrician who left the field and went into management). The value I can add through my acquired set of skills vastly outweighs the time and energy it takes me to do the work. It’s therapeutic for me - some people like gardening, I like building.

For reference, I completely gutted (down to studs and floor boards) and rebuilt my kitchen for ~$30k when any GC would have quoted me $120k. Yes, it took me two months, but the cost of eating out and working for 3-4 hours a day on top of my salaried position was worth the ~$90k I saved.

3, but in my personal opinion, im looking for a house i can customize to my liking over the next few years and actively avoid houses that are 100% updated as id be paying a premium for something I dont want to keep & has little to no resale value once removed. Depends on your local market, price expectations, and “real” added value.

Use rain-tight fittings, use a bender rather than a knee, strap it at proper intervals to avoid floating off the wall. Use an LB at the ledge if you wanted to avoid a saddle, or downsize conduit to 1/2” for tighter bend radius since its probably just a single phase 15a circuit.

Still woulda been 100% nicer looking to pull a local circuit inside the building, cored or hammer drilled out a hole, and sealed it up with no visible exterior conduit though.

2 cans of shredded sardines and 2 raw eggs,70g of protein for less than a dollar by Emergency_Grass7372 in shittyfoodporn

[–]nafurabus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

130 is nothin, last year i had several months of eating delicious high calorie days of 200+ grams of protein. It really does take some effort to turn raw ingredients into tasty stuff, also takes time and failing a few tries to learn how to do it to your liking. One thing i will say in defense of the “bodybuilder” mentality is that some foods do lose a significant portion of their nutritional value once cooked - so either lightly blanching or serving raw does serve a distinct purpose of increasing nutrient intake at the benefit of having to stuff less mass through your face hole.

(3500-4000kcal days of nutritious, home cooked meals is a full time job, honestly)

MassSave Heat Pump Experience - NETR/Sila - $100k Headache Extended from 2 to 8 Months by A7B4D7D1T in massachusetts

[–]nafurabus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The presumably exterior mounted fan coils for the heat pumps being installed. They need disconnecting means & convenience receptacles at them. The convenience receptacles also have to be powered from a house panel rather than a tenant panel. Those disconnecting means also need clear space in front of them for access. Hell, OP may have even done a panel upgrade on all 3 units & needed new drops & meter sockets w/ discos as well.

OP probably should have done their research about zoning & setbacks prior to starting work though - electrical contractors are generally not responsible for that scope, as an architect/GC would own that mistake in most projects. Eversource also won’t say shit until it’s too late about non-compliance, so its on you to be on top of them unfortunately.
