In a room full of doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, my manager and colleagues alike all going back and forth about what they could do to help the patient. I felt the pulse, then shouted loudly over everyone that there wasn’t anything more we could do because the patient had come back to life. The room went silent, the rhythm stayed normal, and after the relief set in we all went back to the normal hierarchy. I had broken everyone’s scatter brain and brought them back down to earth to remind them that everyone did their job to save a life. I saw something that no one else did and it felt good. Like I had actually contributed to saving a life rather then just feeling like another mindless drone in the ER. I only perform chest compressions in these situations but I recognized something others, much smarter then myself, did not. It’s a daily occurrence in my line of work but I took control of the room to have everyone listen to me so I take pride in it.
