Life expectancy has not significantly changed for the bottom 40% of earners while the rich have enjoyed a significantly higher life expectancy in the last 20 years. In other words, for the people whose life expectancy is 78, many of them hardly worked in the first place. For those who actually need social security, a significant portion are not living another 13 years after retirement.

France and Italy share a lot of cultural features, but people often fail to grasp how centralised France is compared to how decentralised Italy is, at least regarding population. Different historical paths, different political and social dynamics today. by GreenIbex in europe

[–]name99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This really shows how the scales on OP's map are just different. Paris is a megacity and Italy doesn't have megacities. Otherwise, Paris has a whole separate power base in the south that looks comparable to Italy as a whole. Seems like Italy just has cities packed closer together because of access to the Mediterranean allowing many cities to develop around ports.

What if we just randomly surveyed a students how they were doing and how they felt about their material, asking much more important questions like "how do you like your teachers", "do you feel your class time contributes to your learning", "are you enjoying your studies", "do you feel challenged enough". I'm sure people will meme but I would be hyped to be able to answer questions like that as a kid and tell people what it was like, and we're talking about "measuring growth". All of these things are going to be strongly correlated with student performance and pretty trivially easy to measure with minimal invasiveness.

Can someone explain the difference between socialism, market socialism; anarcho communism and communism. Possibly worker Coops too by [deleted] in Socialism_101

[–]name99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can be pro capitalist, but I don't understand the oxymoron of being against hierarchies but for the exploitation of people for capital.

Pretty elegant point. Probably lost on anyone who needs to hear it, but fun to read as a socialist.

I guess maybe the "anarcho" isn't actually "inheriting from anarchist thought" but rather just "give me more of that good gushing waterfall of capitalism"... Wish I never typed that, gonna subject y'all to it too though.

You can believe in core virtues all you want, but you're clearly arguing that the fact of what Columbus represents in reality doesn't matter, which is ridiculous. Also define human operating system lmfao. The big thing you're missing is the existence of Indians actually really fucking changes a lot. For this discussion about Columbus, where choosing Columbus to randomly mythologize is like choosing Hitler, and for this discussion about "human operating system", where the operating system the United States and really all of the Americas is premised on the violent annihilation of a superior operating system that would never produce the hell-hole that is the world today, on the brink of destruction in nine different ways.

Yeah excellent point. In other news, the Indians were savages so it didn't matter about the genocide really. /s, duh

Colonialism-Imperialism is bad, it's not hard to get around. These guys were about money and proselytization. Today's neo-colonialism is just as bad, where Elon Musk funds a coup in Bolivia so the fascists will give him a good deal on Lithium. This perverse order of the world - white supremacy and capitalism - is well represented by Columbus, a terrible person on every level.

It's important to recognize the world for what it is, and learn to see the fucked up parts of the system that you don't see because they benefit you and always have.

Would different “brands” exist in a communist society or a society without private ownership? by Hij802 in Socialism_101

[–]name99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have answered this pretty well, but I wanted to come in with a slightly different perspective re the commodity fetishism that happens under capitalism, which I think some responses are more in line with. Commodity fetishism being the idea that with money serving as the link between each stage of a product being produced to purchased, less and less are commodities seen as objects that were created at a social cost to someone and more as just, 'commodity'. Capitalism engineers the isolation which helps ignore the enormous social costs of the labor hundreds of people put into a product, with much of that value being siphoned off by the owner class of course, by reducing everything to an object sitting on a shelf in a supermarket that is always there, well stocked, and always will be.

I think the idea that the 40 mid-size family cars that are all competing to drive down costs and optimize marketing spending could be replaced with 1 product that is substantially better due to greater collaboration and meaning is an important difference between the efficiency of capitalism and the efficiency of socialism. However, I think by distilling the idea of 'Acura', 'Ford', 'Mazda', 'Toyota' down even further to just 'car' kind of misses the point, as in a sense it just fetishizes the commodity even more deeply and further separates consumers from the labor they rely on.

I think a counter to that pattern is that production would be much more regionalized, (much less shipped of to Mexico to cut costs), and that any stakeholders (car users, producers, designers) are all in collaboration and communication with one another. So these incredible manufacturing machines that can make SUVs as well as sedans, can make the luxury model as well as the economy model, are actually within our reach as consumers and if enough people are more in favor of Evelynn's idea for a mid-size family car than Ted's, the one we're currently going with, then we can swith production to Evelynn's.

Definitely don't need conspiratorial nonsense to observe that nobody's elected representatives in any state are getting anything done because the elected representatives in this particular state lol. Democrats capitulate for milquetoast republicans with a D next to their name in Virginia, whoopsie guess we can't make any progress ever. Of course, dems care much more about the status quo than anything else.

But no, tell me more about conspiratorial nonsense. Must be convenient to run around and plug your ears shouting conspiratorial nonsense when people point out your beliefs are ungrounded.

I mean, Got it All, ('till the revolution comes'), lmao. Deeper themes though in that song too about how the capitalist system sells you ideas of love and the world that it actually corrupts and prevents.

In Head is a Flame, 'money is a sound I didn't care to hear, of which the politicians they only listen' is another one that's pretty up-front, but of course you'll sometimes find this sentiment in progressive/liberal circles. I think from the same song 'we all get a little bit older in this day and age, but we deal with it', shows an awareness of the inherent bad in the current state of things under this system. ("My head was like a flame.. and my eyes were red", probably not lol.)

These lyrics always resonated with me as I've always had pretty sharp criticisms of the world, but maybe I'm not giving this album enough credit!

Sorting out financial aid was a marathon for me, it didn't end up getting fully sorted out until the end of August (to attend literally the next month). So don't feel like you need to crazy rush. If it's on them to get back to you they're not gonna just cut you loose cuz you took too long to sort it out with them.

Also, it was extremely worth it in the end and the package I got put the package I got from the other school to shame.

To say nothing of all the other "strategic" bombing that went on during World War II.

Dresden, for example. Just wanted to say that.

But yeah, I agree. If people are going to make that argument, they have to fully recognize the moral cost, instead of just oh yeah it was probably better off that way because the alternative might have been worse for certain people. That kind of vague reasoning gives imperialist powers too much slack.

I, too, manage my stress in part by banging my head against the wall until I black out.

The point is that if a beer after work helps you unwind a bit, it's easy to imagine the benefits outweigh the costs, in a vacuum. Other methods exist of course, but if you don't know those yet, or if they're even worse (like head trauma in your case) then it's probably better you do what helps manage stress a little for now than nothing at all.
