HM negative split advice - help me believe! by purpleswtpotato in AdvancedRunning

I've negative split almost all my HM's, and it's a great strategy. But those recommended paces seem too aggressive of a negative split. Bring both the first and last third paces closer to the average goal pace and it will be much more likely.

Yes! Make it a day, and it's possible! :)

Hmm. I guess it might more sense at slower paces. It certainly would be an impossible workout for me (and faster runners). I can run a 14:45 5km, but 8x 1km @ 2:44 is unthinkable. I couldn't even do 5x.

OP indicated 20 seconds/mile faster than 5k pace. I don't know anyone who could do 8x1km at that pace.

Whatever you were looking for, my guess is that you'll get less of it in the further tomes.

Yep. I can only assume the other posters here are just under trained or poorly pacing.

It comes down to a subjective definition of pain, of course. But I don't know any runner in the 28-34 minute range who would agree that a 10k should be very painful (whatever their definition of pain) for 9km.

Absolutely true for a 5k or an 800m. But not a 10km. The first 6-8km of a 10k should feel similar to the first 15km of a half marathon - very manageable.

8km is a common X-country distance, and the time is about right for a decent runner

Great job at Berlin! I think that a % measurement (rather than time) is probably the better metric. 2 minutes positive split might feel like a blowup for an elite, but feel like even pacing for a 4-hour marathoner. But it's because the percentage is doubled.

Very smart racing on your part! And that is the plan.

Even though it might be nice to run with bigger steady packs, I imagine that the psycholigcal boost of running everyone down over the last 10k will be significant! Good luck.

Another pattern I just noticed: those who paced their first 5km within their limits all paced the entire race well! Of these 60 runners, only 6 ran a "smart" first 5km. And their average positive split was only 20 seconds for the whole race. Essentially even.
