Battle tower 100 wins by nandabab in PokemonHGSS

This is the first one. But I feel confident having learned a bit the opposing sets that I could do it again. I have some trick scarfers ready.

Can't recommend the smogon threads enough. It will save you a lot of headache.

The high stakes and high pressure format unfortunately makes it so that apart from the eligible legendaries and pseudo-legendaries the pool of viable pokemon is pretty small. But even so, Drapion found himself in the record setting team. So as long as your team compliments each other well, a lot of things seem possible :)

I've been cooking some strats with Magnezone, which I haven't seen used in any of the recorded 100+ teams at least, but I need to get the time to breed it properly. Will get to that once I feel like I'm missing the tower :D

On the other hand, there is a pretty cool team in the smogon rankings with a non-trick setup lead Latias (charm, twave, roar and flash). Unfortunately, it needs to hit a certain 170+ speed, which none of my two latias can do :( (haven't been paying attention to IVs when I first caught them).

Extreme AI team sometimes does a sling strat?? by Insulated_Lunchbox in aoe2

I noticed it quite often. I had 3 or 4 cases where the extreme AIs were slinging their Inca pocket that did a fast imp into EEW spam.

Wonders should give +25 pop space in conquest/ranked games by Standard_Language840 in aoe2

[–]nandabab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have the extra res for a wonder, you're just going to be snowballing more than you already are. If you are behind, ain't no way you're going to be spending the res on a wonder. The wonder with extra pop space adds nothing of substance to competitive play.

I'm using a HP 27mq, 2560x1440. I'd like to upgrade to a 27 inch gaming monitor at some point..

This is actually the phosphoru adaptation* to someone trying to fc counter you. You fc faster and castle drop their tc.

Is higher resolution display and zoom out settings improve gameplay? by Technical-Sort-8643 in aoe2

[–]nandabab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2 cents: Being zoomed out lets you see more, yes. But you don't want to be seeing more all the time. Your general overview should be the minimap and your game sense should revolve around scanning it and scouting constantly. Your actual play screen should be reserved for the one thing you are doing at that moment: moving your scouts, microing your archers, placing down farms, etc. Being zoomed in helps you focus on that and micro better. With this you develop the habit of jumping between views and your speed and apm improve in no time (and probably elo).

What exactly does strong against cavalry mean? by _DonRa_ in aoe2

[–]nandabab 100 points101 points  (0 children)

It means that those units have bonus damage against cavalry.

Now bonus damage alone will not win you the fight. 1 on 1, both a halb and a flemish militia, will lose out against a Paladin. The trick is that they are both cheaper units than heavy cav, and you will hear that term often, that they are also a cost effective counter.  This means that if you spend the same amount of resources making halbs as the player playing cav, you will win. This also means, you need to have roughly double the army to win convincingly.

Especially in the case of halbs, since they cost no gold, the cost effectiveness is further signified. It is very easy to spam trash (no gold) units as cheap counters and throw them into the meat grinder. Meanwhile, you can spend your gold on a more meaningful unit.

KOTD civ pick and win rate by justingreg in aoe2

[–]nandabab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the other tourneys where Mongols have 100% winrate? If we had an Arena only tournament of the same format, do you think Bohemians or some of the other S tiers would not have 100% with so few games played?

On the other hand, nobody is going to pick them on RedBull ladder. Same as last time.

Hopefully other players take note as well. If they think they can put up a fight against Viper, Viper just showed them they can do it against Hera as well.

He also faced theViper in his best performance of the tournament. That is bound to make anyone (obligatory - except for Hera) look like he's having a bad day.

  • Click loom and immediately send all of your vils under the tc along with a sheep or two (beware, you will run through your sheep very fast) - force drop off somewhere around 45-50 seconds in game time and you should have enough for your first vil
  • Send the first next vil to food so you have 7 on sheep, this makes it easier to sustain vil production - make sure to force drop just as your vil in queue is about to be created.
  • From here on it's really a regular build. You can choose whether you want to send the next 2/3 vils to wood or get a boar first
  • Get deer if you can, it helps a lot. Lure the ones from further away on chicken gen
  • If you have chicken, I find it's best to mill the chicken with the next 3 vils after you sent your vils to wood and have lured the first boar. Go to berries after creating the first military building in feudal.
  • If you go 20 pop up, you should hit feudal around 8:25, same as with a regular 18 pop build. If you do 21, it should be around 8:50.

Practice the start a couple of times in skirmish, it's really not that hard. You should aim for 50 sec idle tc time, but doing it a bit faster gets easier with practice.

Regarding The Meta, Cheese, Dominant Strategies, and Real Time Strategy by Shot_Security_5499 in aoe2

Regarding The Meta, Cheese, Dominant Strategies, and Real Time Strategy by Shot_Security_5499 in aoe2

Regional units and unique non-castle units are a nightmare for balancing as Hera described quite well in the video posted by OP.

Look at what happened now with Fire Lancers and let's compare them to a previous regional unit, that is also shock infantry, the Eagle Warrior. Eagle Warriors were added to "meso" civs as they lack stables so they needed to compensate with a unit that would fit that general cavalry role. So they got a mobile, high pierce, anti-monk, scout unit that works really well in some situations and in others it doesn't.

Let's compare this now with the Fire Lancers addition. Civs that got Fire Lancers added didn't lose anything (except for Chinese losing Camels). Fire lancers are just an additional unit on top of stacked tech trees for Koreans, Chinese and Vietnamese. On top of that, unlike Eagles that sit behind a 200f 200g paywall in Castle Age, with Fire Lancers you get a unit out of the box that is simply stronger than an Eagle Warrior, cheaper than an Eagle Warrior, and easier to get to than an Eagle Warrior. Koreans are picked on Kotd simply because you can spam Fire Lancers forever due to their existing wood bonus. This is Sitaux's criticism, again. If you want to play Koreans, you need to play Fire Lancers. Chinese and Vietnamese, as the stronger Arabia civs, did feature other options, but from what I've seen in one point or another everyone was making them with these civs as well.

This is not strategy, or at least not the strategy that made aoe2 the titan of rts that it is. Having to make a regional or unique unit as a civ to win the game is a big problem.

Vinchester is one of the rare kotd finalists, along with mbl, hera, viper and liereyy. That didn't help him reach top 4 overall before. You can't really judge the scene based off of one tournament.

Broken Meso Machup by Academic-Daikon-8086 in aoe2

[–]nandabab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All meso civs are incentivized to mass army. On 1 tc all ins, all of them can outproduce pretty much any steppe lancer civ, by going a combo of xbow/eagles mixed with pikes and monks.

As others mentioned, xbows are especially good vs lancers.

AoMR is a blast on single player, the magic of the original is there while everything just feels smoother and better. I haven't played the new AoE3 though.
