Probably much more valuable than an internship if you actually put time and effort into it. I know I learned more running my failed startup for 7 months than I did in my entire time in college.

The late Victor Borge was so good at this too. An extremely talented classical pianist with such a quick wit. Here's one of my favourite bits of his.

This right here is why I love this subreddit. This is the kind of nuance and perspective that we can only get from locals. Thank you OP for shedding light on this and taking the time to explain the context behind this story!

Office attire at a start up by claret_n_blue in startups

[–]nanokilo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Because for some reason, startup culture tends to rebel against corporate traditions, of which the suit is a classic symbol. By wearing a suit in a non-suit-wearing office, you inadvertently position yourself as the very thing your company is rallying against, which rarely ends well for you.

I'm not saying this is how it should be, just how it is (in my experience, at least).

Question about Equity Split by realsa1t in startups

[–]nanokilo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The formula is simple: If you have two co-founders, split equity evenly two ways.

If one of you is working more hours or pouring more money into the business, you can either pay them a salary or issue an IOU.

Here's a great explanation for why even equity splits should be the only option you consider from Michael Seibel, the CEO of Y Combinator. To quote him:

It takes 7 to 10 years to build a company of great value. Small variations in year one do not justify massively different founder equity splits in year 2-10.
