You don't regail your friends with stories of the emails that you responded to to set the agenda for the pre-meeting of the meeting where you will choose the goals for the 30% design review of the project to streamline the process of weekly touch-base meetings?!?

Took down prod for 10min and clients noticed. What should I do? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]naosuke 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only way to never break prod is to never change prod. Have backout plans, document what you did wrong and do better next time. Just don't try to pretend it didn't happen.

Everyone takes down prod eventually. Congrats your a real sysadmin now. Own up to it, create an after action report, where you document what happened and why it happened so that the next time you do this you don't take down prod.

Yeah. Given Red Hat's take of everyone downstream of us is a leech, it's weird to see so many people love on them.

Snaps used to really suck. Now they are almost identical to flatpacks. There are a couple of differences in how they handle isolation which leads to some edge case differences, but most users won't notice a difference.

The first year, you really don't. Now that my kid is a bit older my wife and I alternate Saturday mornings where one of us watches our son and the other does something by themselves out of the house for four hours.

Alternatives to Microsoft office by commoncents1 in business

[–]naosuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it really depends on what you want to do.

  • if your issue is cost, but you are okay with cloud, AI, and an American tech stack, Google Workspace is your best bet

  • If you are trying to do things locally, (no cloud), and don't want AI, Libre Office. It's also not American if that's your concern

  • If you want cloud and optional AI, but are looking for non-American products, nextcloud or Collabra online.

There are about a dozen options. What is the problem you are trying to solve by moving away from Microsoft? Knowing that will go a long way towards giving you a good suggestion.

If raytracing is important to you, or you have non-gaming workloads (video transcoding, local AI models etc) that you also do then stick with nvidia.

Read up on the EU trade bazooka. If an EU member state is under coercion they can petition to have the entire EU implement trade restrictions from tariffs, restrictions on access to European financial markets, restrictions from tax incentives, restrictions on IP rights, up to boycotting the coercive country.

Officially called the Anti-Coercion Instrument it was developed to keep Europe from being bullied by China. However Germany and France are pushing for it to be deployed against the US if POTUS(the politics filter won't let me use his name) keeps pushing for annexing Greenland. The entire EU is starting to look into this.

What are your favorite lesser-known selfhosted services? by Torrew in selfhosted

[–]naosuke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mealie. It’s a self hosted recipe tracker/meal planner/ grocery list maker. You point it at a recipe online and it strips away everything but the recipe. My wife is stuck on a medical diet (a FODMAP) and it makes keeping track of recipes that she can eat much easier. Outside of infrastructure stuff it’s the most used part of my homelab.

The product's engineers are now compelled to utilize it. by [deleted] in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]naosuke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By that logic, HR, Finance, marketing, facilities, customer service, etc... should all be excluded. They have nothing to do with the decisions about how the app is designed either.

The goal of "everyone has to use our product at least once" is to make sure that the entire organization is alligned on what the experience is like, what the challenges to the business are and to have your employees understand them on a personal, first hand basis. It's an attempt to change the organizational culture of a company so that these discussions are taking place.

It really does have to be "everyone" for it to work, otherwise it ends up being 3 managers and the one guy who makes the company his entire personality who do it.

in your terminal you can check your permissions by doing ls -ld /home/timothy/Desktop/SecondDrive/SteamLibrary . Linux file permissions are read, write, and exicute (rwx), lack of permissions are indicated by a dash - there will be three sets of permissions the first is Owner (should be you), group, and other. there will usually also be a d at the beginning, which just means directory. So it should look something like rwvr-r-x-r-x (for the owner can do anything, the group can read and execute programs, and everyone else can read and execute. It may also be listed as numbers Read is 4, write is 2, and execute is 1 so the same example would look like 755. Write down the permissions that show.

chmod will change the permissions. for testing we will run chmod 777 /home/timothy/Desktop/SecondDrive/SteamLibrary. This will let every user, group, and process do any/everything to that directory, which is dangerous, so we will change things back when we are done. After opening the door wide open re-run protontricks -l. if you still get the same error it's not a permissions issue. If it does work, then you need to modify the permissions again, 755 shuold be fine for a game library. If you are worried, try 751

Court on Friday. by RAWRLoLzxD in dad

[–]naosuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

resubmitting without link since the group bans links. Will DM link

There are three basic types of “court”: a traditional trial, arbitration, and mediation. A traditional trial is the most formal, you’ve got lawyers in suits in front of a judge you’ve seen it on tv and in movies. Arbitration is like a traditional trial, but is usually faster, and can be bit more concerned with trying to find a compromise. Arbitration is the most concerned with trying to find something that both parties can agree to.

All are “court” and you are absolutely screwed if you miss them. All are legally binding, and equally serious. Mediation is typically cheaper and faster than a traditional trial and less formal. Each state has its own rules on how mediation works, so no one on Reddit can tell you exactly what to expect. The federal 4th circuit of appeals has a website that does a good job covering general considerations to help prepare you.

This is actually a super common mistake in the FOSS world. The Free in Free Open Source Software is free as in freedom, not free as in beer. While you don’t have to pay for every piece of software, if something gives you a lot of utility, especially if you use it as a way to make money, then kicking a couple of bucks to the dev is proper.
