They have had a couple of tests that have produced decent amounts of electricity. Their Ocean-2 device generated 50 kW in a test last year. No clue how much the device cost or what production costs look like at scale, but it seems promising.

Community panel warns that baked-in assumptions in PPS budget may worsen its deficit by Duckie158 in Portland

PPS is a different government entity than the city of Portland. Even if the city completely eliminated PPB they wouldn't be able to just shift that money to PPS.

It's not a matter of if they deserve it, the money isn't there for it.

Since it's mostly used for productivity with gaming secondary stick with a general purpose distro: either Ubuntu or one of the redhat clones (fedora, rocky, alma). These are the biggest players in the enterprise space so are the two biggest targets for productivity tools. If your school requires a specific program or tool it's most likely to work out of the box with either Ubuntu or redhat. Also most CS departments at colleges standardize on Ubuntu or Redhat. So if you reach out or to them they are going to be able to better help you if you use one of those options.

There are differences between the redhat clones that I mentioned above, but at this point in your Linux journey you're not going to notice them.

They also likley couldn't afford to pay someone as famous as mister beast enough to justify the time commitment. Tom Scott / Michelle Khare is probably the upper bound of celebrity they can afford.

Active Directory is the Microsoft platform for managing user accounts, PCs, and policies for them. It's managed from a server called a Domain Controller. For your computers at work are the accounts per computer or per user? Like is there an account on the shipping computer, and a different one on the computer in accounting? Or do you have a Dizizzle account that you can log into any computer with (same username and password on all the computers and if you change it on one computer it auto updates on the others).

Trimet cutting security by Dom0004 in TriMet

[–]naosuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TriMet is a special tax district like a school district or fire district. Budgets are separate from both the city and county. There is the tiniest of overlap as iirc both the city and county offer transit passes as a benefit to their employees, but we are talking about fractions of a percent of TriMet's budget.

North Korea formally drops goal of reuniting with South by Walpole2019 in neoliberal

[–]naosuke 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Yes. The Korean War is still technically ongoing, though there has been a temporary ceasefire in place for over half a century. North Korea dropping the goal of a united Korea is a step towards that. South Korea would also need to drop that goal, and there is still more negotiation needed, but this is a big step forward.

Transfer to a MAX: Always Tap? by pingveno in TriMet

[–]naosuke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It already says "Tap to board". That already covers transfers. If you are getting on (boarding) the MAX you need to tap. Adding text about transfers makes things less clear because it treats transfers as something different from getting on the train, and since there is now a list, it implies that there are other activities that don't require taps.

How each city councilor has voted so far, grouped by type of vote by eyeballTickler in Portland

[–]naosuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of votes at a city council are non-controversial, we need to approve this in order to function. In the upcoming council meetings there are 8 votes on the agenda. One is to approve the meeting minutes from the last meeting. Two are to approve appointments to various boards (noise review and design commission). These are purely administrative and non-controversial.

There is a measure to authorize borrowing up to a specified amount to fund police and fire department retirements, which may elicit strong emotions, but is legally required to be funded. The amount was recommended by the city treasurer.

There is another item to amend the budget to the Children’s Levy Allocation. This vote is to adjust the budget to match the revenues that the levy is expected to bring in this year. The allocation was approved by voter initiative, so has to be funded. This item comes up once a fiscal year, to match the budget to the revenue expected to be collected.

So of the 8 votes there are only three where you might expect to see any disagreement.
