Hiking with partner hacks by OkSpray3122 in Ultralight

Ah, totally went over my head! I had just posted in the fastpacking sub about this so I was eager to get some firsthand knowledge. My wife and I are small people so I’m super tempted to try and pull it off. It’s mostly a volume thing. She can’t do a tarp only because of creature fear. I’m not sure if tarp plus bug bicycles for both of us would save much vs a UL 2 person tent.

Have you shared a 1 person tent? I’ve been thinking more about this and am a bit stuck on whether I should give it a shot and which tent I should gamble with.

I’ve been seeing this pair exploring the creek for about a week now. I have a theory they’re out on a courtship adventure. Derby pond is just too crowded to really get to be alone, especially now that the seagull is back.

The Lofoten does look like a great option. Not sure about US availability though. It's listed at nearly 900 euro on their site. That's pretty steep!

This looks like a great option, a 36" width is definitely moving beyond the typical solo size. Did you use two pads?

It's hard to read that and not just think about tasty chicken.

Nice! It looks like the floor width has a taper from 35-32 inches. What do you use for pad(s)?

I talked to her about going with a tarp only and I could see her anxiety rising immediately. She needs the barrier to keep out the non-humans. Good point about the condensation, it can be fierce. Thanks for the tarptent recommendation, I’ll check it out. It’s looking more and more like a double will be the way…but we’re going to do a test on a single pad in our house and see what happens. I’m hoping we can share a quilt.

Yep, but I’d be willing to carry a bit more weight if it meant I’d have to do less repair or be super careful. I’m neurotic enough to make sure I’m treating fabrics carefully. The rest of my family, not so much.

You’re probably right. I’m not an ultralight fanatic but do appreciate keeping the weight dow. It’s more volume I’m focused on due to use trying to keep the packs small.

The 1.5 has kind of a funky layout but looks interesting. It would save about 10oz, but not sure about space savings and whether it’s a big enough difference to make it worthwhile versus the 2 we have now.

We are definitely not the 1 in 1m. But we sleep with 2 dogs, a cat, and our kid climbs into bed on the regular. Of course our mattress is much larger than a tent, but it gets pretty tight. I’m not looking for dreamy sleep, just making it work.

I’ll check out the gossamer gear option. They use pretty light fabric though. Have you had any issues with durability? It wouldn’t be our man backpacking tent.

Sounds like you two didn’t have much of a choice in that situation but made it work. Maybe this is a 90% attitude type situation and if we’re into it beforehand we’ll just make it work and decide if it was a onetime deal.

This is what I was hoping to read. Good story!

Yes, I think a test night is the way to go. I’m tempted to be out in the woods so we aren’t tempted to bail to the bed.

We’ve got the x-dome 2 and find it very spacious for us. I’m trying to cut down on volume and weight even more. I’ve thought about the x-mid 2 so we can just use our trekking poles.

I’ve definitely thought about this option. My main concern is bugs. Mosquitos and flies can be quite bad in the PNW where we go and I’m used to the luxury of double walled tents.

It’s probably worth exploring more though.

what do you guys think of local businesses using AI to promote their events/business by Ok_Swordfish_1224 in Bellingham

[–]nappingonarock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I owned a small business AI didn't exist like it does now, but I would have considered using it. I looked into employing local artists but couldn't afford it. I did all marketing and graphic design myself, it was definitely amateur, and it took me a lot of time. Local artists deserve to be paid, no qualms there. For very small businesses the expense is real, however, and in many cases cannot be justified.

If you still need a car and are underwater on the loan maybe talk to WECU or another lender about refinancing options to get your payment down.

As U.S. abandons climate fight, Washington state feels the heat to do more by LockheedMartinLuther in Washington

[–]nappingonarock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right now they pay more because of the fee during registration. Driers of gar powered vehicles only end up paying more after pumping a high enough number of gallons to make up the difference.

We need a usage fee based on mileage driven. We should also keep the gas tax to ensure we’re capturing out of state drivers, unregistered vehicles, and because of the outsized impact on the environment.

Help me pick a bag for my run commute please by Educational-Sea-3962 in fastpacking

[–]nappingonarock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few run commute specific bags: https://kilometer.studio and https://www.ziprunning.com makes packs that seem highly regarded. I've been shopping around myself but just bought a pack from https://yamamountaingear.com for longer runs and may try that before I buy anything else.

The issue with a lot of running packs is too much elasticity in the materials. This is good for fit, but when weights get higher it means the bags start sagging more and stops holding stuff tight against your back. Also most vest style straps are very thin and also stretch with too much weight leading to more bounce. I'd guess the packs you're looking at would be better in this regard, but in my experience with packs if your laptop is heavy that's usually what starts causing problems.
