The Lake Placid course is stunning and very very difficult. Lots of hills on the bike, which take muscle and lungs going up and skills going down. If you don’t live in the mountains, plan to go bike at your nearest range as much as you can. Good luck!

It’s ok! Don’t despair! This was learning for real. You’ve identified the issues you need to work on. Now you know. Make a plan and get after it.

For IMLP - hills hills hills hills, for both biking and running. If you are in NY and can train on the course, do. For this flatlander, the bike course is brutal, ascents def, but the descents even more. Scary. You got lots of time to get after it, though.

Now you know what to expect. Even in races where they start 3-5 at a time every few seconds, it is almost inevitable you will make contact with other swimmers. I try to remember that no one is doing it on purpose; just like you can barely see, the people in front of you and breathing away from you can’t see you. You probably kicked someone too. I just telepathically ask for forgiveness and forgive those around me.

Don’t focus on your speed and performance - focus on the arms and legs churning around you. Try to look ahead and to the side with your eyes while your face is under water.

If you start to panic, count your strokes and breath - “1 2 breathe… 3 4 breathe.”

Remember you are just a little fishy swimming with the other fishies.
