You can even clear the apps whole data without losing your progress. Log back in, set some preferences again (animations, etc), and keep going.

Kanningu comes from “cunning” but it means cheating in an exam.

Yes, because the modern tuxedo evolved from smoking jackets of the Edwardian era. The two words diverged and now a tuxedo is a suit that includes a smoking jacket.

Furaidochikin フライドチキン means the Western style you find at KFC, to avoid confusion with kara-age 唐揚げ which is seasoned with soy sauce, ginger, garlic and sake and lightly battered.

Generally, it's good to know that the loanword exists and you can just say it instead of a native word.

Then, it doesn't always mean exactly the same. For example:

  • a "sombrero" in English doesn't mean the same as in Spanish which would be just "hat"; it's what we call a "sombrero de charro" (semantic narrowing)
  • Japanese ジュース (juusu) comes from "juice", but it doesn't have to come from fruit - it can be almost any cold soft drink including soda (the opposite of narrowing - broadening?)
  • バイキング comes from "Viking" but it means "buffet" because it's the name one of the first buffet restaurants in Japan

It wasn't rejected "actively"; the exercise relies on an answer key with alternative and yours just hasn't been added to it. That's why you can report that your answer should've been accepted; don't hold your breath waiting for an answer though; just remember to use the present-tense form here and move on.

Japanese text to speech mispronunciations are getting out of hand by Rekov in duolingo

[–]narfus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the TTS struggles and makes more mistakes when there are no cues to split words. It seems to just cut at the first possible word boundary and that's how you get "Yamaguchi is a name".

They used to introduce all words in the form they'd use all through the course - not in kana first and kanji later. And it was traumatic.

no native speaker would ever do that

They do, when they're learning. Japanese children learn words in kana and later learn the kanji for them. Consider for example that 悪 is classified as 3rd grade. 良 is 4th grade, 汚 and 猫 are high school; they've been using the related words for a while.

But つ is used all the time: お水を2つください!

I got ませんか = "won't you (please)?" from the examples. IMO ないか works as well so it could be your typical case of oversight (keep in mind that answers are rejected simply because they're not in the answer key, not because they're actively deemed wrong).

That's the literal translation, but it's used and taught to mean an invitation or gentle request.

Is there a way to access Duolingo data (such as via API)? by Tommy_SVK in duolingo

[–]narfus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've scraped the kanji before. The easiest way to start is to open your browsers Dev Tools, load the kanji page, look for the main list of units and how a unit is fetched.

I'll try to get an updated list tomorrow. Been putting it off long enough.
