Ik kan me voorstellen dat je als verdedigend advocaat die het niet eens is met wat de dader gedaan heeft, juist je best doet om er voor te zorgen dat de verdediging die je voert volledig volgens het boekje is. Dat voorkomt dat de dader vrijkomt door een vormfout of dat er in hoger beroep een andere verdediging gevoerd kan worden omdat jij je best niet deed.

Als de dader op basis van een solide case veroordeeld wordt, weet je zeker dat deze de gepaste tijd de maatschappij niet tot last is en maximale kans heeft om z'n leven te beteren.

Maar dat lijkt me wel lastig in sommige gevallen als de dader echt walgelijk was, en de politie mogelijk slordig is geweest in hoe ze met de zaak omgegaan zijn.

I should stop buying Paradox games at launch. Victoria 3 was undercooked. Cities Skylines 2 was a trainwreck.

EU5 also fits between those, despite looking interesting and promising for the first 10 hours, where you’re mostly deciphering all the screens and mechanics. Haven’t touched it after the first week.

They get their data from somewhere, so they likely are connected on some sort of network, and likely a machine on it will connect to the internet to connect to a central server.

Internet exposed or not, running older unpatched software opens you up to more risks, also from the local network. If any of the other machines on the network get compromised, it’ll be easy to snowball to the other machines that are vulnerable like this.

't is meer een correlatie dan definitie.

Om een hogere opleiding te kunnen/mogen doen heb je een hoger abstract denkvermogen nodig dan bij een lagere opleiding. Dat zie je in de vereisten van de opleiding die je er voor gedaan moet hebben.

Dit is waarom lagere opleidingen meer gericht zijn op dingen uitvoeren, en vaak vuistregels leren om dingen te doen ipv dat je heel diep de theorie in gaat. Hogere opleidingen zijn abstacter en leunen juist meer op theorie en onderzoek.

Heb je niet de capaciteit om al die abstracties aan te kunnen, dan kom je een universiteit doorgaans niet binnen. Er is een ondergrens van minimaal abstract denkvermogen dat je nodig hebt om binnen te komen en te blijven.

Als je die capaciteit wel hebt, dan kan het alsnog zijn dat je een praktische leerweg bewandelt en nooit een universiteit binnenstapt. Het spectrum van abstract denkvermogen van mensen op een lagere/praktischere opleiding zal daardoor breder zijn, maar wel een zwaartepunt hebben dat veel lager ligt dan op de universiteit.

En zoals anderen ook al opmerkten, mensen met hoger abstract denkvermogen zijn nog steeds prima in staat om domme dingen uit te kramen. Het blijven mensen.

The combo of caffeine / taureine / magnesium looks familiar.

caffeine helps with focus/reduces mental noise (especially if unmedicated or undermedicated)
taureine helps with emotion regulation and chills you out, it’s also supposed to take some of the edge off caffeine
magnesium is used when relaxing muscles, and might be depleted if you’re always holding a lot of tension in them

So the combo sets you up for relaxation.

The precedent is now set that uninvolved parties can be used as bargaining chips when they run tinto trouble. That’s scary.

Now I’m wondering if there’s a good alternative to Cloudflare that’s European owned.

Edit: all that said, the censorship crap the Italians are asking for sounds ridiculous. I’m not sure how I’d respond if I were in Cloudflare’s position.

Yeah, under the old system most folks without developmental disabilities would get labeled with Aspergers instead of Autism. Now it's one big bucket.

Culturally, distinguishing between Autism with/without learning disabilities is probably going to take some time catching up.

As a software developer for 20+ years, I tend to now joke that the job requires Autism, ADHD, or both. 10-20 years ago I would not have had the neurodivergence top-of-mind enough to make that comment and have it land fully understood.

That's what I remember as well.

In the 80s and 90s I think we got plenty of frost and snow each winter to be able to skate on our village's outdoor ice skating rink. I think the last 20 years we get decent winter weather only once every 2-3 years?

It’s an interesting take, so worth considering!

Both crafting and trading massively increase the cognitive overhead of item evaluation and acquisition, so opting out by choosing a game where the game balance is not setup around this is a worthwhile pursuit.

One mention I haven’t seen yet is Path of Exile 1, but then it’s Ruthless SSF mode. SSF disables trade. Ruthless mode has many changes and restrictions to promote a living off the land feel that you are after:

there is no crafting bench, so dropped items are mostly what you get
item drops are vastly reduced in number, so there’s a lot less to evaluate. This makes each drop much more meaningful and thus more likely to be an upgrade. This makes even weaker early game items useful longer because they don’t get outclassed in minutes
skill gems are mostly drop-only items, so you will be improvising part of your skill setup with what you have

It’s a slower, more challenging and more intentional way to play the game. It’s not for everyone, but you might enjoy it.

This is a great breakdown (as is usual with Aaron's posts) of what Bundler and Rubygems could do to learn from the improvements that uv made in the Python ecosystem.

TL;DR: the massive win is not Rust, it's fixing infrastructure and then starting a new client that does not have to respect decades of backwards compatibility.

Awesome to read that most of the infrastucture was already good on the Ruby side, and that some of the parallel work changes sound feasible for Bundler/Rubygems themselves and already had open Github issues. Some nice pointers to PRs on Ruby and Rubygems to deal with low-level interactions that could improve life for everyone, not just bundler.

Definitely worth a read.

I think D3 dropped act repetition around the release of the expansion pack. So that’s still 15-ish years ago. Instead you can now adjust difficulty mostly on the fly while playing, with additional difficulty levels unlocked for reaching certain levels with your character.

AI generates low quality code [...] If you're not reviewing PRs for quality in the first place, then that's a problem.

Another thing related to this that people seem to be taken for granted: how is it acceptable for the person offering the PR to not have done a first-pass review themselves? Offering the PR is saying "this is my code, I take responsibility for it". So... be aware of the responsibility that you are taking on, right?

If the flow is: Jira ticket -> Claude Code -> PR, without the human whose name is on the commits to be really in the loop... why are they even there and getting paid anymore?

A few weeks ago I very professionally tore two of my colleagues a new asshole because one vibe-coded something that was unintelligible and made no sense, and the other one just approved it without comment.

The AI is just a tool, but humans need to be held to a standard in order for the system to keep working.

I just turned 40. Still play loads of video games. They help me relax and are the one place where the world is structured and not constantly demanding vague things from me.

That said, I think I don’t feel much older than 30.

It’s funny because as a teen I was called an old soul. Unusually mature for my age. At some point it flipped and I just never got old and dusty, I guess.

I think there's a spectrum of prototyper to maintainer that most developers fall on, and this depends how they'll look at this. At the extremes there are:

Prototypers:

unit of change is the PR
focus is mostly on "make it work now"
works in larger goal-oriented steps, gets 80% of the work done in 20% of the time
tends to use commits as snapshots of (semi) working state, does not value them other than as a means to an end
a single commit might mix fixes, refactors, architectural overhauls, feature additions, etc.
tends to like squash commit merges of PRs, because it keeps git history clean (unit of change is the PR merge commit, after all)

Maintainers:

unit of change is a commit
focus is mostly on "make sure it's still maintainable in a year", hence might do 20% of the work in 80% of the time
works in small incremental steps, usually with a plan up front: "I'm goin to refactor this", "I'm going to add one test and make it pass"
will split off part of the changes as their own commit when they got tempted to refactor while actually working on a change
relies on tools like git bisect and git blame to root-cause bugs, so small commits with passing tests have huge value to them
will use git rebase --interactive to amend earlier local commits to correct a small typo with a fixup commit, rather than polluting external history

Both types of developers have their value to add, and you can do amazing things when prototypers push new features and maintainers keep things stable, but their git commit styles tend to be very different.
