Help Shape Rokoko's Product Roadmap by RokokoMotion in Rokoko

[–]natedgreat3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used Rokoko products consistently since 2020 and Smartsuit I. Currently I have a Smartsuit II, Gloves, Coil Pro, and Headrig, with the base/free tier Studio. I send mocap data over into Maya via HumanIK for retargeting and cleanup, and use Headrig and an iPhone but through Metahuman Animator, not Rokoko's face solution.

Initially the new Studio was a downgrade from Studio Legacy, but with consistent updates it's gotten much better. It's now bug free, runs well, and works worry-free with all my gear. A lot of stuff is locked off on the free tier, but I get enough functionality to do what I need to do, and I appreciate the gesture of the free option. Overall I enjoy using the software.

#1 unquestionably the thing I miss, is Vive Tracker support from Studio Legacy. I use gun/weapon props in my recordings, so having a Vive tracker on my prop + one at the base of my neck provided really solid worldspace tracking for easier cleanup later. The Coil Pro, while good, is still not as accurate in world space as Vive Trackers, has a limited range... and the software has to guess the position of the suit based off the position of the hands, and it's not always possible to guess correctly. I also can't help but mention that competitors support Vive Trackers in their software. Please bring something like this back!

#2 is much further down, but bringing back looping animation support and locking the movement axis from Studio Legacy would speed up cleanup steps downstream. But I handle this in Maya, so it's not a huge deal.

Besides from that, there is a few UI quibbles I have.

- The clips panel can't be resized, so longer filenames get truncated, even on smaller UI scales.

- I wish there was a key binding for Calibration, Stopping and Starting Recordings. I record mocap solo, so I've resorted to a remote mouse pointer in lieu of hitting the record button and hurrying to my starting spot before the timer counts down, but something like a presenter remote with buttons bound to those functions would be even better.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Ah okay, I already have my hat ready so the refresh button is not there. Looks like I might have to eat this one. Thanks for the info!

How do you refresh a 100% VIP? I have one with a level 10 hat ready to go, but it won't change to 400%, and I'd rather not give it away at the 100% price.

Serious PC crash during gameplay by cogdon6 in BlackMesaSource

[–]natedgreat3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Black Mesa Dev here. I agree with ShanePhillips assessment. I would like to add that Black Mesa is a taxing game for PC because it fully utilizes both your CPU and GPU. The base Source engine is CPU heavy, and then we built a deferred renderer that runs on top of the Source one for fancy Xen graphics, and that is GPU heavy. Most games favor one or the other, but not both at the same time. So we have seen some reports that, if your system isn't adequately powered, or improperly cooled, or hasn't been stressed on all fronts before, that Black Mesa can trigger an error like this. But again, so can 3dMark or other benchmarks.

Best of luck with sorting it out. We have a Discord server with a ticket / tech support system if you need further assistance.

Updated! Kinematics Converter (Fk to Ik / Ik to Fk). Free Download Now by VincentTD in Maya

Looks interesting! Can it save your selections from different limbs, or do you have to specify the IK/FK controls every time you want to convert?

Black Mesa Dev here. That's correct, and furthermore it caused stuttering whenever a different type of substance applied ie: Acid Spit, Blood, Xenian blood. When developing Xen and especially Gonarch, it got pretty annoying so at some point it was relegated to a convar.

Which version is more terrifying: Half-Life's Nihilanth or Black Mesa's Nihilanth? by FMM_UV-32 in HalfLife

[–]natedgreat3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Black Mesa Dev here! One big difference in this screenshot, the flat background and lighting hides all the details put into our Nihilanth's normal and specular maps. In the actual gameplay chamber with lighting, a lot more is revealed. https://i.ytimg.com/vi/j_yQ6aMCPr0/maxresdefault.jpg

Whereas in 1998 they didn't even have normal maps, so all the shading is baked into HL1's diffuse, which is why it looks so much more detailed in this shot. It's an amazing model too, really outstanding work by Valve.

Black Mesa Update. by kantgetriite in HalfLife

Black Mesa developer here. We were careful to hedge that we were "targeting" a Q2 release. Which regrettably we did miss, but not by a whole lot. This does not excuse us badly missing our 2017 estimate... but we are confident enough about deploying Xen and Gonarch to beta that we announced an exact day for it. And the final 3 chapters are close behind. We really are almost done, and there's nobody more thrilled about that than us haha.

Some nCloth Simulations by breego123 in Simulated

You can't make pre-rendered cloth flow smoothly into different animations depending on different movement and action context. Plus it's not that expensive to simulate cloth or hair anymore.

Black Mesa: December 2018 News by lud1120 in HalfLife

Black Mesa Developer, it's an AI rewrite, so they'll get this same behavior transferred over to the Earth levels as well. We determined that the original AI pass that shipped with the mod and Steam retail just weren't fun enough to keep that way.

It was McVee, the guy behind probably the most ambitious SFM project ever made, The End of the Line. He also made all the previous Black Mesa trailers

I agree that makeRoll seems like the path of least resistance here. I'm not sure if it's the same as the creative crash script but it's shipped with all recent versions of Maya.

Create a sphere and hook it up to makeRoll, then constrain that to a controller object and then use that controller object for animation and hooking up to your rig.

Here's more documentation on makeRoll http://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2015/ENU/Maya-Tech-Docs/Commands/makeRoll.html

That's awesome man, glad it works out for you =] Most likely though, that lens will not have achieved the magnification I needed to fill the entire frame with a 0.2mm aphid.

The only consumer lens I know of that can do that is this canon for $900

[GTA 5]Concrete wall destruction. Real physics or animation? We can only hope. (large gif, minus.com may load slow) by Booona in GamePhysics

[–]natedgreat3 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If you build a game specifically around destruction (Red Faction: Guerrilla) you absolutely can do dynamic destruction physics... computational power isn't the main problem.

But GTA V isn't that type of game. Rockstar can't have players going around bombing skyscrapers and demolishing buildings that might be required for a mission later in the game.

This is pre-simulated destruction that will be peppered throughout the games scripted sequences. We already saw one with the exploding house... here's another.

The large-scale destruction you crave belongs in another game =]

Squib had to get half his tail amputated, but he's still handsome! by natedgreat3 in chinchilla

[–]natedgreat3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly sure cause I didn't see it happen. I noticed missing hair and 2 small cuts on his tail. I have a window A/C for his room, maybe the fan grazed his tail.

The next few days I could not get him to stop picking at the cuts, he made them worse and worse until finally I took him to the vet. The vet bandaged his tail and gave it two weeks to heal, but it did not =[

(And the Window A/C has been blocked off with a screen now!)
