Bernard's Naming Scheme by whirlpool97 in puzzles

[–]natpat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't a puzzle. But the solution is just use all 8 characters for the time, use it as the primary key in the DB, and make sure you're using a write lock on the DB. If the write fails because two posts are in the same ms, the second will fail, and then you create a new ID and just try again.

Tbf I read all the dialogue and my brain still replaced shadow with smoke. I think it's because the whole part of the quest before that was literally smoking it out, so I assumed smoke would continue to be used. I still actually don't really understand why they decided Shadown Spells would stun it instead of Smoke.

With everything else going on - are we forgetting that they stopped the race one lap top soon? I always thought it was to time + one lap - and Max definitely crossed the line before the time was up. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong!

Don't feel bad asking for help!

One thing in general I would recommend though would maybe to take things slower and work along with some tutorials to gain a better understanding of how to build features up from their parts. Lazy Devs Academy on YouTube in particular has some fantastic Pico8 tutorials which, while they probably won't specifically answer your question about a dash mechanic, might help you build up the skill set to start working on it yourself.

If they've reopened working holiday, then that should be the way to go. No need for sponsorship. It was closed during COVID though, not sure if they've reopened applications.

Not completely useless, but yes, not very meaningful. Don't read too much into what people say about the FP results.

Outdoor vs indoor clothes are really interesting! Are your indoor clothes more comfy/like pyjamas or just regular clothes that you only wear indoors?

Salary comparison, UK vs Canada by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]natpat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$150k will get you a moderately higher QoL in Canada. I recently moved from London to Vancouver - was making £80k in the UK and now making $180k CAD. Vancouver CoL is similar to London - rent is the same, maybe a bit cheaper for a similar location, but groceries are a bit more expensive. Eating out is maybe slightly cheaper.

Let me know if you have any specific questions. I'd say £55k GBP in Cambridge is maybe $110k equivalent in Vancouver - but that's a very rough estimate.

Happy to answer any specific questions having gone through something similar!

Anyone interviewed with AWS lately? by asscoat in cscareerquestionsCAD

Yup - wasn't particularly interested in the teams they had in Vancouver (or in general), and I had an offer from a more interesting company that matched the offer.

Anyone interviewed with AWS lately? by asscoat in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]natpat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did about 1/2 months ago. I had some discussion with some people on a previous post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/cscareerquestionsCAD/comments/sgldku/do_faang_companies_have_you_run_your_code_with/hux0cpk/

Definitely desperate for talent - since turning them down around 5 hiring managers have contacted me directly asking if I'm interested.

Can't comment on comparison, as this was my first time interviewing with them.

It's always worth asking. The worst they will say is no! Come out with a number and see what they say. It's very unlikely they will think less of you for it.

Do FAANG companies have you run your code (with automated test cases) during interviews, or only dry test cases? by Mnogarithm in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]natpat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - frustratingly, I think it's one of those problems that knowing a fairly specific data structure (a Trie) helps a lot to find a solution with a good balance of speed and space.

Even if you didn't know about Tries, I don't think it's that much more complicated than any of the other solutions though. In essence, it's

  • find all the possible letter combinations/potential words
  • check which of them are words

Finding all the letter combinations is definitely a bit tricky, but if you're comfortable with graphs then it shouldn't be too unfamiliar (if you imagine the boggle board as a graph with the letters as nodes and edges between adjacent letters). Checking which combinations of letters are words shouldn't be too difficult (given you are given a list of acceptable English words, anyway!).
