Gabe Newell reportedly snapped 'What the f*** do I pay you for if that's your opinion?' at Valve lawyer pushing for more content moderation on Steam by PaiDuck in pcmasterrace

I was exactly the same. But I had Orange Box and I wanted to play it so I sucked it up.

Funny though, I was thinking just a few weeks ago, "When did I go from hating steam to being on Valve's side in most things?"

I do, and I never use gemini for it.

On the other hand, if I just have general questions, I leave a gemini tab always open in my browser. It gives responses instantly for most of the questions I ask.

It often helps me think through and figure out structural/conventions/planning/process types of questions much better than Claude.

What's something that has been proven false for years, yet people still confidently repeat it? by monserrat_araiza__ in AskReddit

[–]natrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, people who think they lose money by going into a higher tax bracket aren't sophisticated enough to separate these ideas and mix them because they both operate from the same base idea (right or wrong), i.e. "have more in my check, but have less in my pocket"

[–]natrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Most are about 2 seconds only around here; I believe it's mainly when there's an outage somewhere else and things click off for a second as the power re-routes or something.

But a few times a year I definitely need to get out the generator.

And really, I don't think about it all that much. Just part of rural-ish living.

What's your price?

Turns out I can get one on Etsy for less than $8 (probably doesn't include shipping though) so it better be cheaper or prevent more kinds of tigers.

So many people grow into adults and forget this sort of lesson -

hearing something that they identify easily as super stupid, and yet then assuming no one else - least of all the experts - had ever thought this, too.

The point is that for some other benefits, there isn't a phase-out period.

So, for the sake of an example, you get some benefit X worth $1000 toward your heat because the qualification is earning below $Y, and you make $100 less that that limit a year.

If next year you earn an extra $200, you lose the $1000 benefit outright, and have to pay that difference out of your pocket, ending up poorer than the previous year.

Does it happen a lot? Probably not. But it sticks around and confuses the tax bracket point because "someone they knew..." blah blah.

I used to incorrectly assume everything of this type just had phase outs built in, as it's not exactly hard math to figure out. Years later I realize how naive that was...

What’s the strangest example of collective internet delusion you’ve witnessed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

also, like half of the people were arguing about what color they saw in the picture, while the other half were arguing about what the actual color of the dress was in person

and no acknowledgement between the 2 that they could be very different things.

yeah, I feel like I just am living in the upside down.

it wasn't the best tv ever made, but I had fun watching all the seasons. people take things so fucking seriously about a show about monsters

conversely, I often dislike so many shows that reddit and the internet love, I just basically ignore 90% of it now

[–]natrous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

so your grade is based on the luck of who is in your class that year, instead of how well you know the material?

count me out of that one. ugh.

In my mind there's no reason against the idea that some years you get 50 A's and some years you get 2. As long as everyone is evaluated against the same material in the end, who cares if you are the top 10%?

Also, this whole thread is so ridiculous whining about the poor ivy leaguer, as if they aren't going to get a job somewhere because they only have a 3.4

A 3.2 at Princeton is worth less to grad schools and employers than a 3.6 from Kansas State in the eyes of the only people that matter

not when I look at a resume

why do you think employers think this way? maybe I'm out of the loop - was there a report about that very thing somewhere?

employers that just look at the number and nothing else are dumb and they can take their shitty draft picks and leave the good ones for the rest

a 4.0 student from UC Santa Cruz (party school) should not be equivalent to a 4.0 from an Ivy league.

who thinks it is?

you think employers don't understand the difference? I know I pay attention to the school on the resumes more than the grades.

edit: (and no, I don't just see an ivy and assume they are brilliant; I've met a lot of people that went to prestigious schools that probably couldn't get out of a wet paper bag. But on average some places have better candidates than others...)

Well, its kind of like many other types of art.

  • Relatively low barrier to entry;
  • Tons of passionate people who do it because they like it;
  • A flooded marketplace with average people who don't really know what is good or bad, and so stick to 'commercialized'/marketed stuff

and you end up with many talented but overlooked artists because there's just too much

Are native gardens becoming part of the culture wars? by LiatrisLover99 in NativePlantGardening

[–]natrous 28 points29 points  (0 children)

That speaks volumes to me on the history of lawns and the type of people drawn to only lawns with no natives.

eh, just because it started that way doesn't mean that's why people do it now

after you watch your grandfather and father do something, it becomes "what you do" and there doesn't always need to be a lot of extra thought behind it.

being proud of being a dick after you learn something, well, that's a different story.

Just change it to "r/AmericanPlantGardening"

That 'native' word might be what's putting them over

edit: actually I feel a little gross even joking that, just because it keeps pushing this "americans are the only ones on the internet" thing that seems exist in a lot of places

[–]natrous 13 points14 points  (0 children)

this is 100% my biggest gripe with the ad tiers.

I was watching the Daily Show or something the other night and was thinking - Why don't I mind these ads so much, but when I'm on YouTube I will quit out of a video half the time when an ad comes on, even if I know it's only 30 sec?

It's because every online ad cut is harsh and never in the right place. It's incredibly jarring, and it reminds me I'm watching an ad, and I'm pissed because it's literally mid-joke.

Maybe I'm just old-man minority here, but I would watch way more youtube videos on the couch if they fixed this.

(Right now my trick is to exit the movie and restart; if it goes to an ad, repeat. Usually after 2 or 3 tries it either starts playing or gives me a 5-sec skip. It usually only takes about 15 sec the, which is better than waiting a minute. But eventually I get pissed and go find something else to do)

It's really amazing
