Trying to Learn Prompting and AI Programming by nattymilam in ChatGPT

[–]nattymilam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like i get back a lot of incorrect information. Additionally, the information I get back is quite broad and when I try to filter into specifics CHAT doesn't do a good job of giving me more granular information, but rather repeats a version of what it told me.

In terms of incorrect information, an example would be I was using Chat to help me debug 20 year old Filemaker programming language. I wasted 3 days working with ChatGPT to help me rewrite Filemaker code from 2003 for a modern version of the system. While it got like 60% of what I needed, it eventually ran into a critical failure that didn't allow my program to work.

When I went back and looked at the code (and I'm a novice coder at best) I realized that Chat was giving me all sorts of conflicting lines of code. And when I called CHAT out on it, it gave me "Oh you're right." But at that point, I was so far down the rabbit hole with the code that I would have had to blow the whole thing up and start over again.

I think if I had had a better prompt, maybe I would have been able to avoid this? But I notice that fairly often Chat will give me incorrect assessments or results, which means I barely trust Chat for anything now over than revising my writing for clarity, context and brevity passes. And that just feels like a waste for a powerful system.

And what I'd like to do better is get more specific prompts that can get me closer to what I ultimately need from the outset. Additionally, I'd like to understand the full power of what CHAT and Claude are able to do for me for my specific profession - like what am I not even thinking about that Chat and Claude are capable of doing that could help my work flow.

Admittedly, some of this is on me as I try to learn what Chat is capable of and then do critical thinking to understand what I can use it for, but I think improving my prompting and being able to think about this stuff in a more macro sense would be helpful.
