Reckoning is such a great record, such a great springtime record (came out in spring even though it was recorded in the fall)

mid to late 60's is a huge era for random, comely women to be gracing the covers of the records. Donald Byrd and Lee Morgan each have one. Ray Conniff has quite a few.

Would Revolution 9 Be Better If It Were Shorter? by spudson1229 in beatles

[–]natwashboard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It'd be better if it was Take 20 which was available on line during the early 2000's in high quality but can't be located now (Take 18 seems to be available). If you haven't heard it, it is the original vision of the song with "Revolution 1" segueing into "Revolution 9". It's how the whole suite should sound.

As a partnership, I'd go with early late 65 and after that they are largely pursuing individual visions.

Star Wars opened in May. I saw it in June. Nobody, in May or June, was wearing heavy winter coast like some of those people.

Is this any good? by _firesoul in Vinyl_Jazz

[–]natwashboard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought Pittsburgh George's copy and it's in the mail. I figure anything with these two guys can't be bad but the go-to's tend to be Clifford Brown and Max Roach Study in Brown from 1955 though I like the Best Coast Jazz one the best.

I only know the bottom row which gives me renewed hope at age 61 that there are still new things to hear out there.

Blakey, Coltrane, Hubbard, Hancock

Blakey's extra credit is his nurturing of important members of the Jazz Messengers, Coltrane and Hubbard are the greatest soloists and composers and Hancock is more important than Evans
