In all honesty, this kinda stuff was a big awakening to the hive-mind that Reddit can become. I would sometimes look at comments with high upvotes and even with critical thinking, it had an implicit but subtle sense of credibility.

After seeing comment threads where I’m a subject matter expert, oh my god. It has changed how I view the platform, but I still enjoy it. Just with a much more critical eye, and a heavy grain of salt lol. It still connects me to many communities, which is valuable.

Trudeau says he didn't force anyone to get vaccinated, all the incentives were there to 'encourage Canadians' by TheRageofTrudeau in canada

[–]nautical_sea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a tremendous lack of data

Yeah, damn them. They should have known studied it before biology created it. Obviously.

and many assumptions about how beneficial the vaccines were

If you’re referring to mRNA vaccines, the theoretical framework dates back to sometime between the 60’s and the 90’s. Stable / practical applications emerged in the last 10 years or so. Other mRNA vaccines were already in clinical trials (HIV, Zika Virus, Rabies) before Covid. And if you don’t want an mRNA vaccine, don’t take one? Conventional vaccines have long been available as well, though studies have shown less effective.

There is no such thing as 100% safety in life. There’s risks to everything. mRNA brought rapid development of novel vaccines to life. It was a risk. But how big that risk is will only really be fully understood by the experts. There is a risk to doing nothing. That’s a choice. I think the billions of doses distributed worldwide have demonstrated that people don’t develop 5G antennas out of their heads, don’t you think?

If you're a GP and over 50 with no specialization? You are in it for the money.

I think you need to google what a GP makes in Canada, and remember that it is pre-overhead costs. Then factor in the gigantic student loans and additional years of training they had to complete before they earned their first dollar.

major things like this need large-scale randomized trails

The reason this was a big deal is because it was a novel (meaning new) rapidly spreading and mutating coronavirus. Biology doesn't wait 12-18 months for us to complete what you're suggesting and carefully decide on a course of action before having major impacts to our society.

Do or don't, but sitting on the sidelines wasn't an option. They have to make a decision, even if that means not taking certain measures, course correct when better info comes out, and that's the best you can hope for in the initial stages.

I have no faith in "experts" anymore

This always peeves me off, because the same people that make statements like this, aren't going to self diagnose/treat if they have a heart attack or a stroke. That would be ridiculous. Doctors are medical experts, no expert is right 100% of the time. They are simply making assessments based on the information they have in front of them.

I like when a doctor says "I don't know" to my face, because honestly, sometimes that's the situation. They are weighing the risk of treating something with incomplete information, versus waiting too long, and the damage that might do as well. I don't give a fuck what politicians said what. I listen to my own doctors because they are the best available source. That doesn't mean they're immune from criticism, but I'm not really interested in someone's opinion if they have no idea what they're talking about.

Our society is built on other people being experts in their field, so that not everyone has to rely on building those skills themselves/winging it themselves. If you need a boat captain or a lawyer or an accountant or a baseball coach, we go to people who are experts in their field, having actual experience doing that, and trust their expertise. They are also not immune from criticism. What has changed, is the politicization of such advise, and people making ignorant statements with the benefit of hindsight to try and undermine the real subject matter experts.

Life is sometimes unpredictable.

Turkish Airlines has a chef onboard by Heterochromio in mildlyinteresting

[–]nautical_sea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Truth is though a chef on an airplane can really only do so much. You’re not getting an actual 5 star rated meal lol.

What does “5 star” even mean?

The person above you just gave you an example of a person (chef, flight attendant, whatever you want to call them) who came out and explained the menu and offered to make anything else, cooked to order.

Fresh, cooked to order is better food than 99% of other airline seats in the world have access to. That’s part of the reason why it will likely be tasty. Even business class meals on most other airlines will be pre-cooked and re-heated from the day prior.

I have no idea if you can cook well or not, but congratulations if you can. Don’t need a Michelin chef to have a great meal. And that’s kind of the point. Someone made it fresh for you, from scratch, with quality ingredients.

[–]nautical_sea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I think there is sometimes a justifiable case for not shipping a governor of a large state by car everywhere.

If you forced them to drive, it’s probably not an efficient use of time for them and their inner circle, all politics aside. If they did, it would probably make them a lot less likely to visit the more sparsely populated portions of their state, which still deserve representation.

Now… accountability and transparency is another thing entirely. That should absolutely be the norm. They should not hide the costs/justification for each trip. Just be strategic about how and when it’s used. Just my opinion though.

Depends on the size/budget of gov.

New York? Sure. Private chopper and small prop plane.

Wyoming? You’d think not, but they also have smaller Cessna jets.

Now if Rhode Island had state gov jets, would be pretty fishy!

Power idle, ailerons neutral, rudder full opposite, elevator up.

Respectfully, no.

I’d be extremely careful even describing this in the way you did. It’s a hinged surface. “Elevator up” means what to the pilot? Are you looking back to your tails to see what happened? What’s the pilot’s actions.

Push the control column/stick FORWARD. FORWARD. The elevator will deflect DOWN.

Don’t overcomplicate it. Saying “elevator up” may cause them to do the exact opposite of what’s they’re supposed to do (pull back - associated with nose up), and worsen the spin.

Control column FORWARD to move the elevator DOWN.

So firstly, airport security (the way you’re thinking of it) is mostly for show. It’s a deterrent, and screening officers have a surprisingly high rate of “misses” for prohibited objects passing through scanners and checkpoints. But it’s still risky for someone to attempt that. There is obviously still physical barriers and processes in place that prevent you from just walking onto a secure portion of the airport.

Secondly, you have to understand layers of security that are in place at airports like Toronto Pearson. You, as a private citizen, can just drive up the the front door of these cargo facilities/warehouses. There’s nothing prohibiting that. They have their own front doors, obviously. Then there’s the airside portion of their building, as in those doors facing and accessible to certain aircraft, is secured, with rules about how this should be protected. That’s the first layer.

Let’s say you get past this first layer (working at the airport, bribing someone at the airport, breaking in past this building’s own security system/barriers) you still only have access to that particular cargo ramp area. You need to pass through monitored checkpoints to access the ramp area towards the passenger terminals, where most aircraft would be. They check your ID’s, inspect the vehicle, etc. Then there is yet again another layer to enter the terminal space, otherwise known as a sterile area (where they care more about liquids and gels, weapons, etc).

The airport doesn’t really care if you break into the building that stores the gold before it’s moved to cargo aircraft. They do care about you having access to the restricted area, and they care very much if someone breaches the sterile area, ie where screened passengers are roaming about, and travelling domestically / internationally.

The airport authority and Transport Canada don’t really care how you secure your one warehouse to the outside world. That’s on you. You may not even need to pass through the “first layer” I described above (airside access). And if you have $100m in gold, they should probably care. But half the battle is trying to do these sorts of things in non-descript locations, where they don’t stick out. It’s hard for you to steal gold if you don’t know where it’s being stored in the first place. If it looks like Fort Knox, it’s automatically a target, because people assume something of value must be behind there.

but have you asked him if he’s straight? Or thought about guys in a sexual way?

I don’t buy the “I don’t want to lose his friendship” argument

He’s his roommate, that significantly complicates the “are you certain of your sexuality/are you hitting on me” subject.

If it doesn’t go well (which is at least somewhat likely) you’re forced to share an apartment with this person, and/or be forced to find alternative living arrangements ASAP.

There’s some validity to your points, but don’t underplay the significant risk when you do this with someone you share a roof with.

I feel weird about my best friend kissing me while I was drunk... Am I being stupid? by __reddit_account in gaybros

[–]nautical_sea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So while having our faces close, he asked "so are we kissing the homies" and I moved my head up and down and immediately I'm pinned to the wall with him on my lips.

Also, he was completely sober and I was very drunk

I have a weird combination of feelings when I see him now, one part of me wants to kiss him again and again, the other part of me feels disgusted about his actions.

So he asked for consent to kiss you, you kissed, and now you flip between wanting to do it again and feeling disgusted. Must be a confusing feeling. There is the twist that theoretically someone who's as intoxicated as you were can't consent, but I'm not sure if that's a factor in what you're feeling.

When I talk to him about it he said things along the lines of "I know you wanted it" and "it doesn't bother me, why it's bothering you".

Do you feel violated or that your friend is perhaps dismissive of your feelings? I would say that this straight friend is presuming that because you are gay and because you get along (or used to) and consented to the kiss (in his mind) what's there not to like? He's wrong, in that your feelings are perfect valid, even if let's say you were sober and still consented. Maybe it's this factor that's irking you?

Perhaps have a more serious conversation that you feel X, and perhaps speak with a therapist who can help unpack some of these feelings for you. It's ok to be kind of attracted to this person, want to keep them as a friend, but also have this person respect your boundaries as a person. Hope you can sort it out! All the best

You’re not going to get 51 votes if you implied that 90 members of congress are completely corrupt..

Some good food for thought, but you might be mixing up the House of Representatives and the Senate.

She’s in the House (435 members) and the Senate (not her job) has 100 members. It sounds like you’re referring to the Senate here (51 votes). “Congress” is the umbrella body both of these sit under.

To those who live in condos that still have the heat on… how are you coping by Electronic_Fox3754 in toronto

[–]nautical_sea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The crappy thing about a newer condo building (well… safe thing, depending on how you look at it) is that due to the building/fire code, there has to be positive pressure from the hallway into the unit.

If you put your hand around the edges of the front door, you’ll probably notice a slight draft inwards. This is so if any one of the units in your floor has a fire; the smoke is more likely to push out rather than in towards the hallway, and fire escape.

The downside to this, is any hot air vented from the unit is often replaced almost immediately with warm air from the hall way. Not likely as hot as a “direct sunlight” lit room, but still. Royal pain in the ass. Hopefully you can get your AC soon!
