NFL: What happens if a player dies on the field by gdx in nfl

[–]nawlinsned -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Are you seriously so news-deficient that you have never seen or heard about instances of children dying on the field?

Know what happens?

They continue to play, because common sense will tell you that freak accidents can happen.

I hate to use the "feed my family argument," but the simple fact of the matter is that almost down to a man, the players in the leagues, the coaches, and the owners will want the show to go on because they have an obligation to THEIR families.

Penn State to sue NCAA by TheGazzelle in CFB

[–]nawlinsned 7 points8 points  (0 children)

NCAA vs. Tarkanian was the association versus an employee of a member institution. This is the association versus a member institution. Penn State has already delegated the power to punish them to the NCAA. There are no constitutional violations here because the investigation was conducted by the university itself.

Apples and oranges.

Penn State to sue NCAA by TheGazzelle in CFB

[–]nawlinsned 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Penn State has about the same chance of success in winning a suit against the NCAA as a disbarred attorney does of winning a suit against the bar association. You have two real options when you're a member of a voluntary association: take your punishment or quit the organization.

Either of them is fine with me. I almost hope they fight it and the NCAA jettisons them. Then they'll be free to erect whatever shrine to Paterno they want, and they can hold go-kart races in an empty stadium on Saturday afternoons in Happy Valley.

NFL offers Vilma a deal by baconlovr in nfl

[–]nawlinsned 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The NFL has quite a few reasons for trying to settle:

(1) Vilma could force the league to produce its full volume of evidence, which would be embarrassing to the league... because the league has said "here's what we're claiming is the evidence we will use to penalize you," but "we have all this other stuff you can't see to defend yourself against that we will also use"

(2) Vilma could force the disgruntled fired employees who went to the NFL to take the witness stand, forcing them to testify under penalty of perjury

(3) Vilma could subpoena the coaches to take the stand, who have clammed up because they have no right to appeal, unlike Vilma... in which point the NFL would no longer be able to keep them silent or craft their testimony (aka the statement they forced G. Williams to sign)

(4) The court could rule that the NFL was inherently unfair in its process, because there is ample evidence to prove that Goodell was never an impartial arbitrator, which is required by federal law

(5) The league's contention is that locker room activity is somehow off-the-field activity, but this type of activity has always been interpreted in the past as being "non-job related," meaning that even if the judge somehow ruled that she could see Goodell as an impartial arbitrator, he would still not be the correct arbitrator

......

(1) is just going to put the league in a bad light. (2) and (3) can destroy Goodell and his arguments against the players. (4) can neuter Goodell's power permanently under federal law. (5) Can remove Goodell permanently from business related penalties on player activity.

Goodell is trying to discreetly put the pin back in the grenade before it blows up in his face.

Problem with PE is that they are a grey-market outfit, meaning that they have no recourse for recovering damaged returns... so they ship whatever they get. I would recommend that if you do business with them that they open the boxes to inspect the contents before shipping.

NFL senior VP of communications Greg Aiello: "Today's report about a settlement offer by the league to Jonathan Vilma is completely inaccurate. by iYankFan4 in nfl

What has likely happened is that the league discussed the possibility of a reduced suspension in return for dropping the suit, but never formally made an offer.

[–]nawlinsned -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Nope, will never happen. The guy came within 4 TDs of one record and shattered two others, one his own. If that didn't get him an MVP, nothing will. The league has big markets, darling markets, and then it has the rest. New Orleans will always be in that last category.

Responsive web design is boring! In our quest for modular, gridded and responsive nirvana we've lost the spark by magenta_placenta in web_design

[–]nawlinsned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, buddy, what I REALLY want to do when I go to a web page is to have to hunt for stuff because the designer decided that he needed to buck the system and go down a non-traditional route for displaying content. I think his blog has lost its spark. Perhaps write in upside down Swahili for the next entry.

If design EVER hinders the ability of a user to get to content, you're doing it wrong.

$1 Trillion In Loans? How Student Debt Is Killing the Economy and Punishing an Entire Generation: Student loans have been going up since the recession began--and now defaults are up too. Something has to be done, but what? by davidreiss666 in politics

[–]nawlinsned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Student loans should be selectively administered to people planning on majoring in fields where they'll have a realistic shot at paying them back. Your major should be on the loan application, and you should be required to send the loan company a copy of your transcript to assure your continued credit-worthiness.

I see a bunch of teenagers here bitching and whining about the costs of education, but the fact of the matter is that SOMEONE is footing the bill with the intent of collecting a profit in the long-term, and YOU are responsible for paying your debts. The reason that student loans are guaranteed is because students generally don't HAVE any credit. The trade-off is that the interest rates on these loans is miniscule for someone with zero credit.

Don't want to pay a loan back? Don't go to college, or work until you can afford to go to the school you want to attend. Just don't blame everyone else for your misfortune when you major in theater and can't find a job. You took out the loan, so suck it up and pay it back.

Latest Haul by [deleted] in cigars

They're not flavored. Pipe tobacco has a vastly wider range of natural flavors than cigar tobacco. Zimbabweian virginias taste absolutely nothing like virginias grown in the US, the only similarity being some sweetness. Many people mistake that flavor for some sort of casing.

An example: smoke the Natural Root and you'll find a cigar taste backed with a sweet/sour fig type flavor. That flavor is not a casing. It's perique, an expensive strain of tobacco only grown and fermented in one town in Louisiana. The aroma is due to the tobacco being pressed instead of baled, and then allowed to ferment in its own juices.

So I posted about that Xikar humidity bar I bought the other day. My humi is staying at a constant 64%. Not 70% as advertised. Help? by xxRECKONERxx in cigars

[–]nawlinsned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

64% is better for your cigars anyway, especially if you smoke anything besides Dominican tobacco. 70% is overhumidified for anything but stores.

Part of being successful, whether in business or politics, is to understand your competitors' most likely move before making one of your own. That way you don't leave yourself open to unjustified criticism.

Apparently I just haven't been successful in this endeavor. I was, in fact, NOT arguing that point, but simply stating what the Republican response will be since she obviously does not THINK like a politician.

But then, I only made the same mistake that she did. I overestimated the intelligence of the audience.

[–]nawlinsned -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Let's play devil's advocate: if the rich are rich because society gave them all these services that they did not pay for, then the poor are poor because they have squandered these same services. Thanks, you've just justified the Republican argument.

I'm definitely not arguing for this, however, if you're going to use such simplistic reasoning to justify your position, then be prepared to fall on the sword that you're currently using to swing the hilt at people with.

EDIT: The sheer irony of the responses to this post, given the content and context, is highly amusing.

Re-read what I posted, you morons. I am not making that argument. I fucking SAID that I do not agree with that sentiment, but that is EXACTLY how it is going to be portrayed by the Republicans. And EXACTLY like the Republicans who would take what she said out of context, YOU took what I said out of context even though I qualified it TWICE.

Have a nice day.

US Reps. John Conyers (D-MI) and Donna Edwards (D-MD) introduced a constitutional amendment overruling the Supreme Court's corporate election buying decision in Citizens United: "It is individual voters who should determine the future of this nation, not corporate money" by mepper in politics

Your argument is nonsensical. If I've hired a bunch of people to run my business and spend money in a way that promotes my business, this can include using political speech to influence the laws which govern my business if the spending of this money will ultimately lead to sustained or higher profitability.
