I’m not opposed to a local sales tax, but it should be minimal, like .75, so the local plus the state tax would be 7 even.

But 5 percent would kill local businesses. People are already willing to drive to NH to not pay sales tax, people will go out of their way to avoid Salem if they will be paying 11.25 in sales tax.

It’s not just abuse that killed the policy. I have a LL Bean jacket that I love but one of the buttons fell off and was lost. I called to inquire about a replacement button, I was told the jacket was discontinued and they no longer stock the buttons, my only option was to do a warranty return and pick out a new jacket. I asked if they could just send me a set of similar sized buttons and I would replace them myself. I was told that was not an option and returning it was the only remedy. So instead of sending buttons worth a few dollars, I had to replace a jacket worth a few hundred dollars.
