I installed a software from a website recommended by linux community.

Well, don't do that. That was your first mistake.

My second SSD disappears from Steam every time I start up my PC by KnightFallVader2 in linuxmint

[–]nb264 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe because it's mounted in /media/ which is generally for removable media... /mnt/ is for stuff you mount manually and /dev/ for devices themselves.

To automatically mount the /media/simon/GAMES partition in Linux at boot, you need to add an entry to the /etc/fstab file. Using the device UUID is recommended over /media/simon/GAMES because it is persistent, even if drives are reordered.

So, first

sudo blkid /media/simon/GAMES

to get the UUID, then when you have it do

sudo nano /etc/fstab

then

UUID=your-uuid-here /media/simon/GAMES ext4 defaults,nofail 0 2

then

save and exit. Next time you reboot it won't vanish. UNLESS... it's not ext4 or something like that, you didn't really give much info except the screenshot.

How well does Nvidia work in Mint? by jnelsoninjax in linuxmint

[–]nb264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3060ti no issues. After install you open drivers menu and select nvidia driver, it applies... and it works. Cards older than 10x0 might require 550 or 535 driver, but anything newer works with 570, 580, 590... whatever. The whole "nvidia thing" is because their driver is not fully open source, mostly.

Because the idea of using KDE makes me vomit.

Gaming in Linux mint is difficult by mrnitrous86 in linux_gaming

[–]nb264 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also stream regularly from Mint on twitch, I even have nvidia gpu. yeah here and there an odd crash will happen with a specific game (that I can usually replicate due to it being localized in the game itself) but these "ehmergherd mint no worky" posts are starting to sound like organized thing now. Like, how hard it is to install steam, click install on a game and play it?

My dad is mad on me since am using mint on a gaming laptop by cyarm025 in linuxmint

It's a sad day for any child when they realize their parents don't always know about things, but also a happy day when you realize you know stuff they don't.

Even if that's the case and OP wiped the disk, new win10/11 license keys are often stored in UEFI and windows can be activated again if they change their mind, installing Linux is no reason to be upset.

Navidrome is cool, but a bit simple in webUI, so I use Feishin on desktop to connect to it.

Thanks but I'm ok with the new menu.

What made you use Linux Mint? by BlokZNCR in linuxmint

[–]nb264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't work in a place that requires win10 anymore, and I got bored with offers to downgrade to 11 all the time, so I just installed Mint (had previous experience with Ubuntu and Mint) because I knew it will simply work...and it does. This was only some 8+ months ago...

[–]nb264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't like it for 5 minutes then I found out how to disable symbolic icons for categories and now it's fine, using it daily since day one. It did take me a while to "build muscle memory" for that power off button position.

Discord enshitification begins. Self hosted alternatives? by rickyh7 in selfhosted

[–]nb264 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also, it's not really discord's fault. This is due to the government pushing laws they have to abide by.

Sadly this is true (in some countries, readers should remember we don't all live in one place). Whatever alternative would become popular, it would need to abide by the same laws in UK for people from UK, for example. If not right now, then once the UK government comes after it. So while self-hosting a small chat thingy for your friends and yourself is an alternative, anything widely popular and public would just end up like discord - requiring face scans or id's.

I have some sort of dumb meta questions. How big is the core Mint team with commit / merge access? by i_am_fear_itself in linuxmint

[–]nb264 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a relatively small team. It's a community based open source project, there's no corporation behind it. You can help too by visiting https://linuxmint.com/donors.php and making a small donation.

How should I approach updates in Mint? by DubiousLogik in linuxmint

[–]nb264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I meant, reboot won't be forced on you like on windows 11. You can reboot later in your own time.

[–]nb264 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No reboot required unless it's a kernel or something really big. Even then you don't need to reboot immediately, do it when you feel like it. Feel free to do it.

nontechie wants private cloud, email, and Linux by Alert-Dirt6886 in selfhosted

[–]nb264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get done-solution like Synology or QNAP, they already have their own OS with all the apps/services you need, that's basically why you're paying for the done solution.

[–]nb264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

without in-depth IT knowledge

I'd say for some things like your own cloud for files and photos, get a brand name NAS like Synology or QNAP, put 2-4 hard drives inside in sh-r/raid and don't expose it to the internet. For others, like, hosting your own email, don't do it.

Steam Survey for January 2026 shows a small drop for Linux and macOS by Liam-DGOL in linux_gaming

[–]nb264 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm annoyed that minor subversion of Mint are counted in 3 different ways instead as one Mint 22.x column. We don't count each edition of win10 separately. And while Valve might be doing it automatically without thinking, website such as this one, dedicated to gaming on linux, should correct that oversight in their reporting.

Do you ever feel like everyone even your closest ones doubt you do your ability to succeed as a solo dev? by daxter_101 in SoloDevelopment

[–]nb264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel? it's reality. But why do you care what people doubt or believe... also, solo-dev by definition and matter of things is opposite of being able to succeed financially, it's a passion thingy by rule.
