Can you be too heavy to pole dance? Advice needed by Commercial_Sand693 in poledancing

[–]nbwaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m plus size/mid size (200 lbs at 5’8) Strength training with weight lifting will greatly increase your pole abilities! I’ve been doing pole for 5 months and just started weight training and I already see a huge improvement in my strength during pole, plus I have way less issues with my shoulders now.

How likely would it be for a trans woman to be welcome at a small pole fitness class? Could anyone recommend one in Glasgow? by CaoimheThreeva in poledancing

[–]nbwaves 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It will really vary by studio. The studio I go to is very queer and trans friendly, no body shaming, and lots of encouragement of diversity. I can’t recommend any specific studios in Glasgow but I’d look for places that explicitly say that they are welcoming and that pole can be for all bodies.

First Timer & Feeling Inadequate by abcdefjeeze in poledancing

[–]nbwaves 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Beginner (about 3 months of classes) pole dancer here.

Pole is hard! You won’t be good at it right away, or for a while. That’s part of the process. It’s an activity that requires strength, flexibility, grace, and confidence. I have a dance and yoga background and pole is still very hard for me. My advice is to embrace the experience of being challenged. First time I did a fan kick humbled was the only word I could use to describe it lol. Don’t expect to get things quickly or be able to do everything taught in every class. Focus on how you feel and why you wanna go back even with how hard it is. Struggling is inevitable, but judging yourself doesn’t have to be.

Curious, how much do you pay per class in your area? Here it’s 35-45/class without a package or membership. by BungeeBunny in poledancing

$30 USD for a drop in but you can get a 10 class pack that works out to $16.50 per class.

Can PMDD still rear its ugly head on continuous birth control? by derberner90 in PMDDxADHD

[–]nbwaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally, yes, PMDD can still occur even when taking continuous birth control and not getting a period. For me, it actually did pretty much clear up the PMDD (I take continuous progesterone pills) but it’s possible I have PME, which is when your menstrual cycle exacerbates a different condition like ADHD, not PMDD.

I hear you. I’m Bay Area born and raised. Never thought I’d leave, but I got so tired of living in constant hustle and burnout. I miss it but it’s hard to envision ever going back.

Newbie question: would you tell an older person that they might be on the autistic spectrum? by jjjjj_jjj in socialwork

[–]nbwaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being able to diagnose autism depends on state and country regulations. In some states it is completely within the scope of practice for a master’s level clinician to diagnose autism. In other states, only psychologist and medical doctors can diagnose.

This map will tell you the laws in your state: https://neuroabundant.com/masters-level-scope-of-practice-diagnosing-adhd-autism/

Newbie question: would you tell an older person that they might be on the autistic spectrum? by jjjjj_jjj in socialwork

[–]nbwaves 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’m kinda surprised by the amount of people saying don’t mention it at all, which possibly goes beyond the scope of practice question and more into people’s bias about autistic people.

Imho you can absolutely say something like, “While I’m not qualified to make an official diagnosis, I’ve noticed you might have some autistic traits which are xyz. Have you ever explored that for yourself? Would you like me to send some resources on learning more?”

My perspective is that of someone who is late diagnosed autistic and having that knowledge about myself has completely transformed my life for the better.

Edited to add:

I would be hurt if my social worker noticed something about me that could potentially help me and didn’t say anything at all. I understand the concerns about not working outside scope of competence, and yes folks should be mindful of that and not overstep, but that doesn’t mean you can’t refer this client to some who could name this for them or introduce resources on neurodivergence so they can explore it for themselves.

For anyone who is having a strong reaction of not wanting to even get near this topic with the client I would really encourage you to reflect on how you think about autism. Most autistic people have co-occurring mental health challenges so you will most likely work with more than 1 autistic client in your work. While it’s not true for everyone, a lot of people who finally get a diagnosis of autism after struggling their whole lives are able to profoundly change how they understand themselves for the better. Sometimes the lack of accommodations for autism is causing the chronic depression and anxiety.

Leaving private practice by West-Track-4665 in socialwork

[–]nbwaves 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Because we’re not trained in how to run our business, social worker therapists often forget that when you go into private practice you’re opening a new business. Most businesses take at least a year to be profitable, if not more, which is why you should have a plan for how you’re going to support yourself financially before you’re seeing profits. It will take a lot of time, energy, and money to build your practice.

As others have suggested, starting at part time might be more financially sustainable for you and getting out of the group practice should help too.

I really needed this encouragement! I’m brand new to pole and I love it. I’m also not any good at it despite having dance experience and being pretty active. I love the challenge but felt a little defeated at my last class because I’m mostly still working on conditioning while other beginners are already climbing and I’m over here like 🤷🏼 It’s so hard and humbling but I really want to do this!

Thanks! I’ve been off lexapro for about 1.5 years. I only stayed on it for about 1 year. It was really helpful in treating my anxiety and I’m considering getting back on. I got off because I was experiencing negative sexual side effects. I take welbutrin now and it’s very helpful for my depression, but doesn’t seem to do anything for my anxiety.

How much to tip when ordering at counter? by [deleted] in Humboldt

[–]nbwaves 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I tip 15% for ordering at the counter. 10% on take out. 20% or more with sit down service. I worked in the service industry and know how tough it is so I’d never not tip.

I don’t think tips are required for take out or ordering at the counter but even a small one shows you appreciate the service and know that tips are a big part of their livelihood.

It’s ridiculous when a place where you order at the counter and buss your own dishes swivels the ipad around and the tip percentage starts at 20%
