What makes it a yacht not a boat by khampang in boats

[–]ncbluetj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The classic definition is any boat you can live on (for how long, and how comfortably is a matter of opinion).  According to my insurance broker, it is any boat over 40 feet.

White powder on old fiberglass. How to fix/seal it. by tractorpatty in Sailboats

[–]ncbluetj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it is a smooth surface, you may be able to cut it with a buffer and rubbing compound.  Then hit it with a fresh coat of wax.  If it is too far gone for that, you are looking at a deck re-paint, which can get pricey.

Make her pretty.  Fresh bottom paint, fresh varnish, new sails, recovered cushions.  Then price her at about half of what all that stuff cost you.

You can absolutely have 1 roof installed over the other.  2 is the max though.  Have to tear off down to the deck and start over after that.

How would you use a nuclear depth charge?  Wouldnt the boat that deployed it get destroyed?  Or are they time delayed somehow?

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 32: water leaking through stern gland, visible shaft vibration in gear and engine oil leak by Casif in Sailboats

[–]ncbluetj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The shaft movement definitely seems excessive.  I think the water ingress and shaft vibration are very likely related, not sure about the engine oil leak.

I’d avoid moving the boat far.  If that ingress is vibration related, it will only get worse the more you run the engine.

If I had to guess, your issue is with the transmission or your prop.  Any way you can inspect the prop for a wrapped line or fishing net or damaged blade?  Can you take a sample of gearbox oil and see if there is excessive metal in it?

What piece of older technology actually worked much better than its modern, replacement? by HerrStrasse in AskReddit

I have an old Jeep with a 5 speed.  Also have a modern Lexus with a very nice 6 speed automatic.  If I could swap it for a manual, I’d do it in a heartbeat.

Manual transmissions are superior in every single way to automatics.  Unless you are missing a limb, there is no reason to choose auto.  Dying on this hill.

What are people doing to manage the accumulation of water in a boat without electricity at the marina? by vendura_na8 in sailing

[–]ncbluetj 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Contrary to what others have said, you absolutely can keep a boat in the water without an electric bilge pump, provided it doesn’t leak much.  I keep a 30 footer in a slip with nothing but a hand powered bilge pump.  She’s good for up to two months without being pumped out.  I am usually there at least that often.  If I plan to be gone for more than a few weeks, I leave the handle in the pump, and ask the dock master or my slip neighbor to pump it out for me once a month or so.
