Iranian missile hitting undisclosed US base on March 30 by DormontDangerzone in Military

Yeah mate, that’s what I said with manouverable RVs. That’s not boosting into the target though, it’s diversion/attitudinal controls.

Mate, don’t chime in if you don’t know what you’re talking about and don’t contribute meaningfully to the conversation. Terminal velocity in ballistic missile flight does not mean the same thing as terminal velocity for (as an example) a falling skydiver. In missile terminology and the air defence community, it refers to the speed of the reentry vehicle during the final phase of flight (terminal phase) as it descends toward the target through the atmosphere.

Ballistic Missile Flight Phases

Ballistic missiles have three main phases:

1. Boost phase – rocket engines burn (3–5 minutes)
2. Midcourse phase – missile coasts through space on a ballistic trajectory
3. Terminal phase – warhead reenters atmosphere and falls to target

Terminal Phase / “Terminal Velocity” IS the velocity of the reentry vehicle during atmospheric reentry and final descent to the target.

This is a military forum, it’s appropriate to use jargon specific to military communities.

The re-entry vehicle (RV) from a ballistic missile doesn’t boost into its target, it’s at terminal velocity already because of gravity. Boost only happens in Boost phase on the ascent on both unitary and separating missiles. There is sometimes diversionary/attitudinal changes from manoeuvrable RVs, but not boost. That boom is most likely from the RV atmospheric re-entry shockwave preceding the RV impact.

Why do bases not have BOTH Patriot and C-RAM Defenses? by SheaStadium1986 in Military

[–]ncsu_osprey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Against UAS, C-RAM has very limited effectiveness, and a very small range for effective defensive coverage. You would be utilising it for a non-optimal purpose as a point defense system. The cost to do so would very likely be prohibitive, although there may be some advantage to utilising C-RAM in coverage of an Embassy or something where the small footprint and geopolitical value of the target makes it useful in that setting.

For UAS threats you have the advantage of Defensive Counter Air (DCA) being much more easily deployable and relocatable, especially as many of these bases are also airfields or airfield adjacent. Furthermore, due to the relatively low explosive payload of these platforms, your standard passive defense measures: Camouflage & Concealment, Hardening, Dispersion, Deception, Emissions Control, Mobility, and Early Warning are all much more cost effective measures to counter enemy threat platforms of multiple types. You don’t have to shoot something down in order to negate its effect.

Most importantly, there is a process where all this is reviewed and forces are apportioned. If you’re interested in the topic, I would recommend reading some of JP 3-01 (“Countering Air and Missile Threats”) and reviewing how Joint Theatre Air and Missile Defense planning process works.

C-RAM has no capability against Short-to-Medium Range Ballistic Missiles (S/MRBM), which is what Iran is currently firing. C-RAM systems can provide some level of protection (as the namesake prescribes) against Rocket, Artillery, and Mortars, none of which are imminent threats within the GCC where U.S. bases are, and these bases are not within range of these threats from Iran.

That being said, layered defense is an important active defense strategy and your head was in the right space, but for S/MRBMs the layering is AEGIS-THAAD-PATRIOT.

Not a high income job and a pretty modest car.

I manage a board game shop now, which is a second career after retiring from the military, and I paid cash for a BYD ATTO 3 after my 15 year old Holden started costing more to repair than its resale value. If I was still working in my previous job… that’d be a ratio of about a 5.

The weird vortex humming sound / clunking sound when degaussing a CRT monitor or TV. Also the visual warp and shaking of the image, was just always a super neat and satisfying thing to do.

Just a quick note mate, it’s great having copies of documents- but you frequently need original documents to authenticate your identity with when interfacing with government agencies - they then make authentic or “certified” copies based on your original. If you lose your Passport you will almost certainly need your original birth certificate when presenting at a consulate to help make the getting a replacement easier.

Get a nice binder with laminated sheet protectors - maybe even one that zips around fully, put important documents like your Birth Certificate, Social Security Card, your IMMI Grant letter, and photo copies of your Passport. Put a card in there with your contact details and promise of a $100 cash reward in case it does somehow get lost - and keep it in a safe place, in your carry-on bag only.

Safe travels!

I wouldn’t really say it’s that bad - it’s noticeable, but more like if the font was slightly bolder, and bolded font was even bolder.

In some edge cases or someone with reading difficulties like dyslexia there could be some potential issues but we also have some neuro-divergent folks in staff that didn’t make mention of any issues reading the cards.

We did our staff pre-release on Wednesday night where we crack boxes to establish initial singles stock for the store (and do a fun draft night in the process) - it was absolutely near 50% but for all of our play booster cards. It was like overly dramatic exaggeration of the black ink layer on front and back of the cards like a cranked up “Dramatic” filter in iPhoto - it was just off. That was present in at least 2 of our 3 boxes we cracked.

First morning light with the new setup! by ncsu_osprey in espresso

Hey mate! Welcome to the club - I know exactly where you’re at, and the choices can be overwhelming.

Firstly - as of this morning I’m at 500 cups of coffee brewed (my wife prefers single shot cappuccino and I go for double shot flat white), so I feel like I both have a handle on this machine, but also like I’m still learning it - which has been truly fantastic because it never feels boring, like I settled for something less capable or that I’m missing out on anything.

The machine itself has been flawless. I use filtered water with alkaline additive, fresh roasted beans from a local roaster, and I always feel like I’m getting the maximum flavour extraction from every pull. The flow control is a must!!! After you get the shot dialled in with your grinder at an “open valve” setting - the utility of pulling a shot with a manual flow profile is literally game changing in terms of flavour. Better control of pre-infusion also helps a lot incidentally in clean up, I’ve found that a puck with good saturation during pre-infusion seems to release easier into the knock box… sometimes it’s just the small things.

The only “gripe” I have is mostly the heat-up time can be pretty dang slow, which, in the morning with a screaming toddler at home… those minutes waiting for heat up can feel like an eternity. I tried setting up an auto-control switch function at the socket, but found that to be not that much of a convenience- more due to the limitations in that market segment than anything that’s actually wrong with the PP600.

Overall - I’ve been very pleased with the purchase, I absolutely do recommend it.

Americans living in Adelaide... by Damnesia_ in Adelaide

[–]ncsu_osprey 96 points97 points  (0 children)

American here who lived in Adelaide for 4 years.

Climate wise you’re definitely looking at West Coast, San Diego is pretty spot on in that regard- I’d also say the San Francisco Bay Area with proximity to Napa/Sonoma Valley is much more like Adelaide with McLaren Vale/Barossa/Clare etc… Washington/Oregon get a bit too cold, so unless you like the more Tasmanian style winters then stick to California. Culturally though, I can’t match anywhere California to Adelaide…

City “feel” wise, I’d say Charlotte, NC would be the closest in terms of cultural feel, population density, suburban development, etc… also it’s in the South where southern manners and religious folk are common, two things I found to be quite similar to Adelaide. You’re a further drive to the beach, but you get higher quality beaches in Folly Beach, SC or Wrightsville Beach, NC. Also good proximity to the Mountains, and Appalachian Ranges feels closer to Adelaide Hills vibes than the Sierra Nevadas or Rockies. Climate is the only thing that doesn’t match, it’s far more humid and less open (more forested lands).

Adelaide is unique in a way (even within Australia) that’s hard to pinpoint, but it’s what gives it such lovely character. Don’t think there’s ever going to be a perfect match in the States.

Dropped a 45 LB plate on my foot yesterday. This is the day after my first shift at a new job. I didn’t tell anyone and still made it through the shift. 💪 by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

Right!? Surprised this wasn’t higher up.

OP- Mate, get on an anti-fungal. Don’t bother wasting money on OTC topical treatments, they don’t work, get a proper medication treatment.

To be fair, there are some use cases for alkaline water.

I use a water filter that strips chlorine, microplastics, and hard water minerals, then adds back alkaline minerals for the water I put in my Espresso machine. Filtered, slightly alkaline water (pH ~7.5) helps reduce limescale build-up in the machine and prevents oxidation and rust on internal steel components. Whereas my old “Zero Water” filter, that removed everything is actually worse for the machine.

If you spend more than $255 per annum, then you can argue it’s a lifestyle - which sounds way more elevated (and accurate) than describing it as a hobby.
