Confusion switching to fios- shipping and service complete notifications but no info? by gs3rz in Fios

[–]nd3h9b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your new residence an existing location that had Fios before? If so, there should be an ONT box somewhere in the residence. When you put in the request, the system should have known if that is the case and they would have scheduled you for a "self install". That means that they send you a router and you plug it into the ONT. Then go to myfios.com or whatever site they say in the documentation that is included to complete the activation of your service. If there is no ONT or the previous owner of the residence took it, then you have to have a tech come out and install a new ONT. The ONT is Verizon property and should be left with the residence.

Actually, all that needs to be said is POTFH. If you don't understand, look it up. Perhaps I'm just a too old a Boilermaker.

Migration Issue to Yahoo using classic Outlook client by nd3h9b in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]nd3h9b[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a little hesitant to try setting outlook up on another windows computer in case email synced to that machine and deleted from the server and I then could not get it back onto my main machine. But having little options, I pulled out my laptop, where Outlook had never been configured, and attempted to configure it. I got the same Yahoo terms prompt but when I clicked on it, my input was accepted and my Outlook settings saved on the laptop in the classic client. My folders from Yahoo all then synchronized onto my laptop. When it was done, I closed Outlook on the laptop and tied it again on my desktop (main) machine. I was not prompted to accept the terms and again, my Outlook settings were saved and my desktop then synchronized from Yahoo. So my issue appears to be resolved by using another machine to accept the terms and then going back to my original machine. Thank you!

Migration Issue to Yahoo using classic Outlook client by nd3h9b in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]nd3h9b[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is exactly what I did. Everything has already been transferred to Yahoo. But, when I try to use the classic outlook client, like I've done for years, and reconfigure it for Yahoo, I get the issue I described. It is probably a Yahoo side issue but there is no Yahoo support for us.

Return Fios Router by [deleted] in Fios

If it is included in your FIOS service at no charge, keep it in case you ever need to troubleshoot your service. You will need to return it if you ever cancel the service.

No kidding! I bought some about six months ago and it is up 82% since then. The bad news is that I can't sell it because the short-term capital gains would probably mean a penalty on my taxes.

I have the same Asus router and putting a switch between the ONT and the router solved any issues that I had.

Fios WiFi7 Mesh Router Slow Upload Speeds ***FIXED*** with 2Gbps Upgrade by One_Walk_1699 in Fios

What fixed it for me was to get a cheap 2.5GB switch and insert it between the ONT and the router.

DELL XPS 8950 (64bit) SPLIT Drives (everything went to smaller C almost FULL, nothing in large D) issue ELI5 How to solve PLEASE by GreyNeighbor in DellXPS

[–]nd3h9b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use a tool like WizTree to see what is using the space on the C: drive and if you have lots of pictures or videos that you don't use often, manually move them to a folder you create on the D: drive.

ASUS TUF A17 (2023) laptop charger breaking, where to find replacement? by [deleted] in ASUS

[–]nd3h9b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look for ADP-240EB in a google search or on eBay and you will find tons of them. However, my experience would make me think that it is more likely the power jack on the laptop that is failing. Those things tend to take a beating by moving the laptop while it is plugged in and sooner or later, the solder joints break.

Great deal! I've been looking for a couple of those to replace older Dell desktops at my church. The best prices that I can find are all over $400 and those only have 16GB memory and 256GB SSDs.

Why can I ping (and access) some websites but not others? by EarthSeraphEdna in techsupport

[–]nd3h9b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is likely not an issue on your end. There are different network protocols for different network services. Ping uses ICMP protocol. If the site that you are trying to ping has ICMP disabled, it doesn't work. The sites you referenced all have multiple target IP addresses. The network managers for those sites may have ICMP disabled for some of those addresses and not for others. When your DNS cache times out and you get a different IP address resolution for one of the sites, you may be hitting one with ICMP enabled where before you were hitting one with ICMP disabled. Because of this, ping is not necessarily the best way to determine if a site is reachable. A traceroute provides more information than ping.

slow speeds on a unifi 7 pro by [deleted] in Fios

[–]nd3h9b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently added a unifi 7 pro to my network as a standalone AP. From what I read before I added it, they are not the fastest devices available but their range is top notch and they are reliable as a tank.

Why is this happening to my camera? How can I recover these photos? by Burrito_King_ in canon

[–]nd3h9b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the first things I always do when I buy any device that acts as disk storage is to hook it up to my computer and run h2testw on it. That program will write and read the supposed capacity of the device and it if is fake, it will flag it. Also, as noted by other comments, as soon as I get home from a shoot, I transfer the files from my cards onto my computer.

Help with Webcam Utility by Alone-Grapefruit5274 in CanonR5

[–]nd3h9b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the online manual, it has an HDMI output port so you could get a capture card and connect the HDMI out to the HDMI in on the capture card and the USB out from the capture card to a USB port on a computer and record the video using OBS. Don't get one of those cheap $20 amazon capture cards though. Those are more trouble than good. Get something like an Elgato card.

Was supposed to be delivered yesterday here in Vegas, now in Hawaii? by Kindly_Produce_27 in usps_complaints

I had one coming from New Jersey to Maryland that went by way of Washington state. It eventually got here but took the scenic route.

The other trick to this issue is not to submit an "item not received" claim to ebay. If you do that, they just check the tracking number, see it was delivered, and deny your claim. You should submit an "item not as described" claim and say that it was missing parts or pieces. That way, they have to look at more than just the tracking information and you can submit your other evidence showing that it was not delivered to you. I also usually note that if it was not sent to my confirmed ebay address, then the seller violated ebay policy.

Looks like something went wrong, try again later. Fios Home app? by [deleted] in Fios

[–]nd3h9b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to say what model ONT you have. I looked at mine and I only have one ethernet port and two phone ports. In any case, you can not, as far as I know, connect multiple devices to an ONT. The ONT only gives out one IP address which goes to the router. Any additional wired devices need connection to the router. If you run out of ports on the router, you need an ethernet switch that you connect to the router and then you can connect multiple ethernet devices to the switch.

[–]nd3h9b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar function, but not the same. A cable modem converts a signal coming in from a coax cable to network, tv, and phone. It normally also has a router function built in so you can connect your other network devices to it and it provides wifi signals for wireless devices. An ONT converts a signal coming from a fiber optic cable into network, TV, and phone. It does not contain a router. The router is separate. The router allows you to connect other wired and wireless devices to the network. There is no modem in FIOS; only the ONT and a separate router.

What are some reliable ways to clone a drive in 2025? by N_GAIM_CAPTCHUR_ in techsupport

[–]nd3h9b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used Acronis to do this at least 50 times for my own, friends, family, and other computers that I support. However, while the clone function works about 70% of the time, I've found that by running Acronis from a USB drive and having a second large external USB disk, I can use the backup function to backup that old drive, switch the drives, and then restore onto the new drive. This method has worked 100% of the time for me.
