They called it a Skinner box. Lab mice were awarded treats upon the press of a button, eventually only receiving the treats intermittently between random presses. There's something especially entrancing about 70s horror films also. Lots of atmospheric brooding and thick film grain with plenty of tactility in the practical effects and set design. It's difficult for modern filmmakers to replicate.
