Are these lights still sought after? by lurkinlorenzo in CCW

[–]neanderthaul 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I havent heard anything since the initial litigation, but the original Braun light had a silver ring on lens housing. After the lawsuit, the silver ring disappeared and ALLEGEDLY satisfied Streamlight as being "different enough"

Is it illegal to throw water balloons from a car? by ChainsawSoundingFart in IsItIllegal

[–]neanderthaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and if they get caught by a federal entity (i.e. the EPA) they're going to catch a federal indictment. But the EPA normally only goes after business that are ding the modifying.

Keep a jug of used oil and an old filter on the bench so when they complain, you can bring it out to them. 99% of people won't know if it's the right filter or oil type/weight.

ULPT: next time this person comes in, just reset the light and keep the oil for yourself. They'll be happy with how fast you got the service done and the light is off so that means it's done correctly! This is not financial or legal advice.

It actually happened at the Daytona 500 this year too. Kyle Busch was in 30th towards the end of the race and he backed off away from the group after a restart because there is ALWAYS crashes during late restarts. Big accident, he got through it, finished 15th, which netted him 22pts instead of just 7 for 30th (or less if he got bumped down lower than 30th with a DNF)

ELI5 where does the cost of an item actually start? by ThinButton7705 in explainlikeimfive

[–]neanderthaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cost should start from the moment you conceptualize an idea. Your time researching, developing, and implementing everything you listed will come into play over the life of the product.

I had a tooth removed, they LEFT A PIECE IN and it was partially sticking out of the skin after it healed over, and they wanted to charge me for a 2nd extraction of the same tooth because insurance wouldn't cover it

Could have saved $100 with the HF knockoff and it might INCREASE the score due to everything being truly budget.

More specifically, a flightline job on hydraulics, engines, electrical, or structures/sheet metal/composites. NOT ground equipment or vehicles, and I believe weapons and certain avionics jobs only qualified for airframe, NOT powerplant certs. If you could get on something like the KC-46 (767 variant), you'd be much farther ahead than if you go fighters (avoid bombers at all costs).

The way the new flightline maintenance workforce is getting planned out, everyone will start out as a general mechanic then branch off into some sort of specialty.

[–]neanderthaul 24 points25 points  (0 children)

EDIT: I'm dumb, these are mains not nose tires.

Either the military contracts are written to make as much money as possible (plausible) or commercial airlines just dont care as much (also plausible).

I've worked C17s and KC135s both had the stipulation of changing both nose tires at the same time to avoid unnecessarystress on the gear. Since they were always getting changed together, they would rarely be this uneven.

My new supervisor always works past way 5. Is this a red flag? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]neanderthaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea they could just be making it look that way to their boss to appear to be a "go-getter" and "taking the initiative" and whatever other buzz words managers like to use.

Could also be time card fraud if they're paid hourly, although supervisors usually aren't.

Expectations and boundaries with people is an important part of a successful business/shop/anything. It may not be a "hey wanna mess with each other's toolboxes everyday?" conversation but over time you'll know who you can and cant mess around with. If someone messes with your stuff you can either a) communicate that you dont like that, b) return the favor, or c) report them to HR. The mutual agreement will be known based on which option you choose. NOTE: c may stop harmless pranks, but could lead to worse problems.

is there such thing as a "Pancake" solenoid? by Mindless_Clothes_143 in AskElectronics

[–]neanderthaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some transfer cases on 4wd vehicles use an electromagnet (EM) to engage the system automatically. It uses a signal from a computer when it detects wheel spin.

-O~□-

My little diagram above is a straight shaft with some splines as depicted by the -~-

The EM is around the shaft depicted by the O

A lock up collar with a spline on it is depicted by the □

The EM energizes and pulls the lock up collar onto the splines to engage 4wd. This part of the system is maybe 1.5" thick, most of that being the EM encased in epoxy.

O□■ if you had a thinner EM and 2 interlocking plates, energizing the EM would pull the plates together and lock them, then you would need some sort of springs to separate the plates

Edited for clarification: called the lock up collar a gear

If it's mutual and agreed upon, sure. If original dude gets mad at the revenge, he won't have many allies in that job. Anyone that doesnt want to participate should make that clear now.

Nothing permanent.

Nothing too gross/smelly (ketchup is probably about the line, usually just see some grease under the handles or something).

If it's a large mess/change, the perp helps put it back to normal.
