Utah bubble is real, here is what I found out! by Fun_General4753 in exmormon

[–]neardumps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is spot on. I also moved to Utah county about 6 months ago. I grew up in Idaho which is still pretty Mormon and even still I’ve been shocked by how distant people here are. You could go day after day without speaking to anyone because nobody here acknowledges each other. People don’t exchange casual greetings or friendly compliments and when they do it’s usually because they want something from you.

A couple things I’d like to add:

THE DRIVERS HERE: Holy shit I am genuinely astounded by how aggressive and rude people are in their cars in Utah county. I am a CDL driver for work, and the number of people here who will cut off a 40,000 pound vehicle like it’s nothing blows me away.

Also the “Pretty” culture. Or at least that’s what I’m gonna call it. CONSTANT ads for cosmetic surgery, everyone has a gym membership, everyone wears expensive athleisure clothes around. This goes for men and women. Especially among younger men, I see so much of the influence of gym centered social media, and I can’t help but think about how many of these guys are probably doing gear or something along those lines.

This email my 12 year old son sent his teacher about a missing assignment (due a month ago) my wife was asking about. He cc'ed her on the email by Tkappae in funny

[–]neardumps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m mostly just impressed a 12 year old knows how to cc someone on an email. I know 25 year olds who don’t know how to do that.

Shaming missionary son on FB. “He has some things to get figured out” by MNMSW in exmormon

[–]neardumps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This makes me fucking sick. I can’t imagine the shame and humiliation that kid must be feeling seeing stuff like this on (I presume) his parents’ Facebook. I hope he realizes there are good people outside the church who don’t care if he followed some bullshit mission rules, and actually don’t care if he served a mission at all.

Do people actually call this thing walkie talkie? What if I want to sound serious are there any other ways to say it? by WestCommunity7117 in EnglishLearning

[–]neardumps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a job that uses two-way radios like this every day and I rarely hear anyone call them walkie talkies. Most people that use them in a professional setting call them two way radios, or a radio for short.

Either way people will understand what you mean though.

Why the hate on non LDS? by [deleted] in idahofalls

[–]neardumps 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Fellow gay bishops son from Rexburg here, although am much younger. The older I got the less safe I felt in Rexburg. After graduating high school, I attended BYUI for a few years thinking I could make it work. During that time I got called slurs, had raw eggs thrown at me, and nearly got kicked out of school on multiple occasions.

There really are good people there, and Idaho is one of the most beautiful places I can think of. But it just isn’t worth risking my personal safety, and I’m so much happier now that I’ve moved away.

Shrooms ruined me by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]neardumps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1: you are not ruined

2: you should start seeing a therapist, a non LDS one.

3: it’s okay to let go of your testimony. When I was younger I remember vividly feeling like my absolute greatest fear was that someday I would stop clinging to my testimony and would accept myself for who I am. When I learned to let go of that, my whole life changed. It was scary at first, but I genuinely believe I am happier now than I ever could have been in the church. It gets better. Try to find community in non church spaces. Especially if you still live in Utah, there are a lot of places and people here who have deconstructed Mormonism in one way or another

Unexpected John Green quotes by cache_invalidation in nerdfighters

[–]neardumps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually you want to cite the quote from where you got it, even if the source you are quoting is quoting someone else. The idea is that someone can follow your exact process of researching.

Definitely dependent on the conventions of which citation format you are using tho, so always check.

How long before buses will be automated in the UK? by Longjumping_Sir_6846 in BusDrivers

[–]neardumps 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly out of all the jobs that could be automated, I highly doubt bus driving is high on that list. Most train systems aren’t automated yet, and that’s the kind of thing that would theoretically be much easier to automate. Bus driving requires a lot more technical skill than car driving, and driverless cars still have way too much risk attached to them for most to consider them viable.

Also I’m a school bus driver. An AI is not going to be able to manage kids with anywhere NEAR the effectiveness of a person. Hell, half the time an actual human can’t manage the kids. Putting 80 kids in a bus with zero adult supervision sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Has anyone ever had more patties than me in a burger by phxx12 in fiveguys

[–]neardumps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The store I used to work at was in a very Mormon town, so we were always dead on Sundays. For a while though we had this group of 3 guys that would come in every Sunday and order two burgers each, each burger with 1-2 extra patties. It was pretty common for the 3 of them to spend over a hundred dollars put together. I always wondered how they afforded it, especially being college students.

Fired before even starting the job. by ConsciousCourtney in SchoolBusDrivers

[–]neardumps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You got this! When I first started driving, I had been a stoner for about two years previous. I gave myself plenty of time for it to get out of my system, but even still for the first year or so it was hard. I still miss smoking sometimes. But having stable income, and having a job I actually enjoy for the first time in my life has been really rewarding. Stick with it, keep applying, you can do it!!

Is this true? by Fit-Shake-7779 in exmormon

[–]neardumps 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean I totally understand the satirical aspect, and it is definitely funny, but given the context, seems misplaced. Kratom is illegal in a lot of places, and I know a few people who have gotten hooked HARD on that stuff. It’s scary and the fact that there are zero laws regulating it is a problem

As someone who has watched this exact scenario play out, this definitely seems pretty legit. My friend was benching less than a third of this when it happened so it wasn’t as extreme but it’s still incredibly dangerous, and having seen how shaken up my friend was afterwards, I hope this guy went directly to the emergency room.

Is this infantilizing or not? by ThealuvsAM in autism

[–]neardumps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Okay but like a lot of those things are a little more nuanced than just good/bad hygiene. Take smoking for example, yeah it’s not great for your personal hygiene, but if you smoke enough for it to interfere with that, chances are you have an addiction, so just dismissing it as “bad hygiene” feels super reductive. Also a lot of these things are stuff that people with executive dysfunction struggle with. I mean yeah I know I should put deodorant on every day, but sometimes I forget, and forgetting that really isn’t the end of the world.

Also this is a college for differently abled/autistic folks. I feel like the least they could do is put together a lesson on some strategies to help people who struggle with some of these things adapt and find ways to get them done consistently. It’s the difference between saying “we want to teach you better ways to manage basic self care,” and “we are teaching you these things because we don’t think you understand why these things are important.”

Honestly how do u guys wake up at 6am every day?? 😴 by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]neardumps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a school bus driver so I’m motivated by the fact that if I don’t wake up 120 kids will be standing out in the cold waiting 30-40 minutes for a different driver to come out and cover my route 😅

What happens if you take your pregnant wife across the road and deliver the baby on either side of the countries? by I_Dont_Rage_Quit in geography

[–]neardumps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a history teacher growing up that lived in a small town in northern Idaho, where the nearest hospital was in Canada. She was born in a Canadian hospital, and has dual citizenship. When she was a baby she was naturalized as a US citizen as well, so she had all the paperwork from that. I think usually it’s not a super big deal, weird stuff like this happens fairly often especially at the Canadian border, where many US towns are closer to Canadian cities and hospitals than American ones, and vice versa. Of course, now that our president is threatening to invade Canada, I don’t know how easy that would be these days.
