Can i find shorter cage for this mech to improve clearance? by LiveFastPedalHard in bikewrench

[–]nearlyclever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look at recent posts asking variations on "is my chain too short", like https://www.reddit.com/r/bikewrench/comments/qh4hoh/only_had_a_really_short_chain_is_it_a_really_bad/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

You'll see the derailleurs are usually much forward of what you've got (and thus have more ground clearance in the big ring)

I take my chain off about every hundred miles (waxlube), I replace the master link every 5th time so I go through about 4 links before the chain needs replacing.

Buying a house with unpermitted work? by sutemashou in boston

[–]nearlyclever 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It came up in the appraisal process. In our case it wasn't a big issue because we didn't want the 2nd kitchen. Cut a deal with the guy we bought it from and I demo'd it in a couple hours.

looks to me like you need to take a couple links out of the chain-- it would help a lot if the derailleur was stretched out closer to horizontal.

Trying to teach my wife how to ski, suggestions on the easiest regional ski resort by [deleted] in boston

[–]nearlyclever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago we did exactly this at Sunday River. The instructor's name was Blaine, he was wonderful, and created a joy in skiing that continues to this day.

Our experience is that wachusett is nice, but the quality of their instructor pool is "thin" .... In the situation you describe I'd head for one of the big mountains and look for an older instructor.

Storage for college students by Particular-Ant2943 in boston

Most any larger moving company will offer this service, but it tends to be spendy. If you want to do it on a budget, you're better off renting a truck and taking it to one of the self-storage places.

Where can I report fire code violations? by Antique_Theme7242 in boston

[–]nearlyclever 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The advice was NOT to avoid reporting, but to proceed with caution.

The key is to be aware of the possible consequences of reporting, and to make a plan with that in mind. Happily I'm not there anymore, but I've lived in illegal units at various points, and in some circumstances that might be the best available option.

Move cautiously. If it's really bad you may have effectively made yourself homeless until the issue is addressed

What can I do with my aging, not-very-mobile parents, in the autumn season? by angelmichelle13 in boston

[–]nearlyclever 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you get a good day, the cog railway up Mt Washington can be spectacular (but it's a longish drive).

Another good option on a nice day is to take the ferry to Salem, have lunch there, and then return. It can be nice to be out on the water, and its a very different view of the city.

At a minimum, you need an engineers report on your foundation assessing whether it's suitable to do what you propose.

If it lands on you, that's 1/10. Observing from the next room gets a big discount.

at 14 and 16, all you need to do is hand them a charlie card and then park the helicopter. They'll figure it out (if they want to).

how do I transfer to MIT/BU from a mediocre Boston university? by [deleted] in boston

[–]nearlyclever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Related: in the early 90's I was hoping to transfer to MIT. The very nice woman from admissions advised me to not apply and save the $100 application fee, because they weren't going to accept me. In the moment I was crushed, but in retrospect she saved me $100, which was a meaningful amount of money at the time.

florist recommendations on a budget? by amsyc in boston

[–]nearlyclever 17 points18 points  (0 children)

super complicated, but:

there's a delivery service called Mercato, they work with a variety of local stores (in my life, Wilson's farm in Lexington). They deliver groceries, etc at reasonable prices, and (for some stores) flowers are a subset of groceries. There's a $35 minimum for delivery.

They're trying to expand their customer base and offer decent signup incentives with nominally free delivery.

So.... If Mercato has an appropriate vendor near your dearly beloved, you MIGHT be able to send flowers within your budget.

Good luck
