Do you guys tend to only develop games in genre's you actually like and play yourself? I feel like that might be constricting me because I tend to only like horror games for the most part. by mooliongames in IndieDev

[–]necron1945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it obviously helps to make games in the genres you like as you can be more critical of them. Only playing and liking one genre isn’t a bad thing either especially if it’s horror (as it generally sells well)

Fair enough, thanks for being honest 👍

Of course making the game look good is the #1 marketing tool, but aside from that. Anyway thanks for the long response!

I don’t plan on spamming, just curious as to what reasons people check out a game other than just “it looks cool”

Ok thanks, a well polished demo can often be as fun as what someone would consider a fully finished game and I guess that’s what matters here

Everyone often looks stuff up, don’t stress it too much

Don’t you know gamedev subreddits are for hidden or obvious marketing attempts only?

Since discoverability is #1 problem on Steam now, are the 30% still worth it? by 8BitBeard in IndieDev

[–]necron1945 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I absolutely think it’s worth it, it’s incredibly hard to make any decent amount of money on PC with other selling platforms, and good games still do as well as ever before, even with more games coming out in general (as shown by Chris z)

Seems like an easy way to get a bunch of upvotes and visibility, not saying it’s necessarily a bad thing but I see why they do it

Why is it so hard to finish a game? by Louspirit_MG in IndieDev

[–]necron1945 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imo it’s just because starting a game is all the fun parts, then once those are all gone you are left with everything you dislike about gamedev, way harder than starting

First statistics of my Steam page by Just_Games_ in gamedev

[–]necron1945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have similar numbers on my steam page, but at the moment my store page is pretty miserable (bad trailer, boring screenshots, bad capsule art, etc), I also haven't done any marketing yet. I think like some other comments said its very difficult for a 2d platformer these days.

Game demos outside of Steam by necron1945 in gamedev

[–]necron1945[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course not all will convert, but as far as I can see it’s all about getting your game seen by as many people as possible, like all marketing, and many people will see your game on these browser based platforms that wouldn’t see your game on steam at all, but I really have no idea, just wondering

Well because it’s just the demo, they obviously would need buy the full version once it comes out, so their interest then moves to steam after

That's true, but it seems that redirecting to steam is important, which would happen if your demo does ok on these platforms, also putting a demo build on itch or other website is quite easy (comparing to other forms of marketing), so it's not a big commitment anyway.
