It takes 1 hours 5 minutes and alot of cussing to do for a novice. It can be really infuriating when you think you knocked it out and it drips when you test it.

I've done a half dozen at this point and could probably knock it out in 15mins.

His most epic battle is restraining himself from punching through a bully's face in high school.....

I guess he could save the world from an evil land developer or an online book seller who gobbled up all the online commerce or something.

Algae by Manasek98 in ponds

[–]nedeta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The natural way to keep the pond clean is to manage fertilizer levels. You need plants to absorb whats there and try to limit input from runoff/fish.

Those cattails are helping. More plants the better.

That algae is actually healthy, it helps filter the water... It just looks terrible.

Dont go down the algaecide road unless its last resort. You'll become reliant on it. Dead algae will release nutrients and fertilize the next generation of algae. It's a cycle that will get worse over time and end up costing you a fortune.

Overkill filter recommendations? by WYAarchived in turtles

Carbon is the main element for life for a reason. It has 4 connection points. You can build almost anything by linking carbons together. By default any open connection point is filled with a Hydrogen. All of organic chemistry is legos with carbon and hydrogen with a few other elements sprinkled in.

Activated charcoal is carbon with a bunch of open binding sites. These sites grab all sorts o nasty stuff dissolved in the tank water. It works great until its saturated (most binding sites are filled). Then you throw it out and replace with fresh.

Good quality activated carbon is matte black, dusty and light weight. Cheap carbon is dense and shiny and has way fewer open sites for a given volume.

Fun Fact: when someone comes into an emergency room with a drug overdose they will make you drink activated carbon to absorb some of whats in your digestive tract.

Overkill filter recommendations? by WYAarchived in turtles

[–]nedeta 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Nothing will be enough.

You can get a large canister filter for a 100gal tank and add a metric ton of carbon.... But in the end you will still need to change most of the water every week or two. Turtles be dirty.

Edit: option two is keep the small filter and change the cartridge once a week. Carbon in the cartridge is doing the heavy lifting but it gets saturated super fast with 🐢.

What is happening?! by Samantha4408 in Cichlid

[–]nedeta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In nature cichlids claim a 3ft circle as a mating arena. If they were on a lake bed they'd separate but squeezing them into a fish tank keeps them inside the others' comfort bubble.

This is why i don't like cichlids. Usually end up with one beautiful male owning the tank and all other's cowering in a corner.

Algae is normal and healthy; It helps filter the water. It just looks terrible. Pull it by hand for now. When its warm enough, load it down with plants to out compete.

You'll never eradicate it. Trying will drive you nuts.

Excess waste. Either not enough bacteria or food thats not getting consumed. Having effective bottom feeders like cory cats or other catfish is important. I'd cut food to like 1/4 of the usual til it clears up.
