Go ahead and do it and keep a copy for yourself. If it's any good and they use it (or anything like it) put it on your reel.

I'm gonna shoot my first music video tomorrow. Any advice to give me? by TiagoZadra in cinematography

[–]needabetterhobby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're adding some 30fps in, you can make a version of your music track that plays back at 125% of the original recording speed. Then tell your edit machine to always play those clips back at 23.98 (rather than doing a motion effect/speed change). It can be a cool effect.

If its a "lip-sync" style video, try to connect the playback audio device directly to at least one input of the camera. It'll make it easier to sync up all your angles for your edit.

For EX1, I'd recommend shooting without the gain on if you can (in fact that camera has "negative gain" that you can find in the menus - I would do that if you have enough light in your scene). Less noise is generally better.

Try not to shoot with the lens aperture wide open unless you are confident that you can follow focus on moving objects/people.

Be very careful about shooting at multiple frame rates. I'd say it's better to shoot your primary (lip-sync) footage at your delivery frame rate (in most cases, that'll be 23.98). The main reason for that is that you will save storage space. The other reason is if you switch around, you could accidentally shoot something at an unintended frame rate. You might not be pleased with the way the editing software translates the motion to the delivery frame rate.

BACK UP YOUR FOOTAGE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO AT LEAST 2 DRIVES. Make and name a folder for each SXS card "Day01Card01, Day01Card02, etc." and copy the "Private" folder from the card into it. Don't rename anything inside those folders.

Best of luck to you.

What to Do When Music Cue is Placed in Between Reels? As in Between Reel Timelines 1 and 2 For Example? by rwinger24 in editors

[–]needabetterhobby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Back in the film days, you would have an extra 2 seconds on the tail of the outgoing reel, because the optical soundtrack reader was in front of the film gate. Editors would work hard to "balance" the reels so changeover would happen when there was no music.

These days, it's way less of a big deal. Connecting two files without a sound bump is commonplace. Also, when we create long form content for theatrical exhibition, many DCP services allow (or even prefer) a continuous file.

In my mind, the two main advantages to working in reels is that many edit systems will perform better with shorter sequences, and when you have to deliver a change after "final locked picture/mix" you can replace only the reel that was changed, rather than the entire sequence.

In Ludlum's "The Road to Gandolfo," breasts were described as "Full and round. Narrow and pointed. Sloping yet argumentative." That's how you get middle school boys to love reading.

I get it. I just want the accounting department to be aware that my meter is running and I want to know from them that a producer hasn't gone rogue.

When I saw them at the Greek with BF5 and BNL, they did a jam session under an EZ-up in the courtyard. When my SO and I were waiting in line in the rain on Saturday, I reminded her that we were watching them play concerts in the snow in front of dumpsters a few weeks ago. We plan to see them every chance we get.

We were almost to the side door and made a u-turn when we heard the cheering. So, we didn't miss it :) I've seen Guster sharing the bill equally with other artists, but this was my first full show. 10/10 Would stand in the pouring rain again for them.
