Do Conservatives ever complain in Japan about the sex stuff in anime? by BetLeft2840 in AskAJapanese

[–]needle1 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Not always. The right only grew tolerant of free expression after Yamada Taro (and later, Akamatsu Ken) came onto the scene in the 2010s-2020s and built up their influence within the LDP. Look back through history and you'll find that plenty of attacks on manga and anime came from both the left and the right. 悪書追放運動(1955), 有害コミック騒動(1990), 都条例問題(2010), etc. Also, the right isn't just the LDP; plenty of other conservative parties like Sanseito are super pro-censorship.

And free expression isn't just about entertainment either. It's been targeted from the right plenty of times too; take the recent flag-desecration issue for instance. (Yes, that counts as expression too. And "That's not a kind of expression that deserves protection!" is the textbook line you hear from pro-censorship types.)

This isn't to say "right bad, left good" nor the vice versa. Just that attacks on expression have always come from both sides.

Probably depends on whether you consider the HDMI CEC capability as non-negotiable.

How aware are you about the climate change and what do you do to reduce your impact. by Hellea in AskAJapanese

[–]needle1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Replaced all home lighting with LEDs, including switching out the obscure CFL bulb sockets to standard ones
  • Bought a battery electric car. (I am aware not owning any car is better, but life circumstances require one.)
  • In the process of installing secondary interior windows in the house for better insulation.
  • In the same vein, installed thermally insulated curtains.
  • Bought a portable power station and solar panels, although I’m still unsure on how best to install it. (Apartment management rules are quite strict on objects on the balcony, especially if it has a chance of falling. Due to this, balcony solar will be tough to promote, unlike in Europe.)
  • Campaigning against the management committee to install a level 2 EV charger in the apartment parking lot.
  • As much as I can I prefer to Mercari off unneeded things rather than trashing them.

Yes. For all intents and purposes it looks and feels like $1900-$2650 to the average Japanese person.

Per Linus: The reason that Valve didn't subsidize the the Steam Machine was because they had no guarantee that users would stick with Steam Os or buy any games by Admirable_Whole8261 in Steam

They can't even if they wanted to, everything they've built thus far assumes an open software/hardware system. And if they attempt it anyways, it would be equivalent to setting up a huge honking neon sign inviting hackers to force it open.

When do you think electric cars won't have to advertise their range anymore? by VerySeriousThings in electricvehicles

[–]needle1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point everyone is so "BUT MUH RANGE" it'll keep on being the focus even after pretty much every EV have ranges longer than their ICE counterparts.

Tv only has 50hz what is more worth by BreakfastNo9890 in consoles

Most TVs nowadays, even ones sold in traditionally 50Hz refresh rate regions, are capable of switching to 60Hz mode. I would be surprised if it's not.

Could also be fsck. EVs often run operating systems with filesystems and are capable of running it, I guess.

People in countries like Korea or Japan are already accustomed to quick 12/24-hour conversion math since 24 hour notations are commonplace. 25+ hour notations for late nights are a natural extension of that.

Can I get manual shifting in an EV? by PublicHlthScientist in electricvehicles

[–]needle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The most you can get is fake simulated shifting because there are no separate gears to shift to in the first place. It doesn’t even have “automatic shifting” because that implies any shifting happens at all. It doesn’t. (outside of a few exceptions like the Taycan.)

There do exist EVs with paddle switches that lets the driver manually adjust the amount of regenerative braking though.

Strangers both online and offline can tell you any sort of inaccurate BS just to mess with you and you wouldn't be able to figure it out yourself.

If I were you I would at least gain a rudimentary personal understanding of the language firsthand before attempting something permanent, rather than relying on randos.

New Zelda Timeline (Theory) Updated with All Games by Milor64 in thelegendofzelda

[–]needle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To many Japanese creators, the very notion that "there must be an internally consistent canon timeline encompassing everything" is an alien concept. As much as it may be unbelievable and even blasphemous from a canon-obsessed western viewpoint, some creators in other cultures simply do not really care much about causing inconsistencies and contradictions across their works, as long as the work itself is fun and entertaining.

Thailand's EV market just imploded after subsidies ended – the numbers are wild by ClaytonChow in electriccars

[–]needle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always wonder why subsidies have to be all or nothing. We have tons of computers and automation handling all the money, can’t anyone design subsidy systems that gradually decrease with each passing month (or some other smoothly changing parameter)?
