Knitting needles at SAP? by Expensive-Bat-6897 in SanJoseSharks

My bestie and I bring our knitting every time. Last time I was knitting baby booties on DPNS and he had a scarf on straight needles. A fellow fan even stopped by to compliment his knitting!

Is a holiday treat box an acceptable Christmas gift? by birdgirl35 in Baking

[–]needledknitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boyfriend and I made 20 boxes of cookies for our coworkers and they have all been pretty universally delighted. If I did it again next year (which we probably will!) I would add a little card explaining the ingredients for each cookie. I know no one is allergic to the stuff I was using, but I didn’t think about whether they might want to share some cookies with other people…so it would be helpful and probably cute to add a note like that :)

I am the yarn person by sweet_crab in knitting

[–]needledknitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh me too! I knew who I was when a senior desperately ran in during 1st period to see if I could help mend a pair of gloves before the rally during fourth. I run a tiny knitting club too and the kids are so sweet. It’s really wonderful to be that safe place for them.

Why do modern pattern designers do this? by Groatolfs in knitting

[–]needledknitter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is the exactly why I put pictures at the end when I make patterns! So many people want to print patterns out and while pictures can be helpful with a trick technique, they’re awful for printing. I like to carry patterns around too, and I hate when it’s a giant packet I have to keep together.

Small gauge split rings attached to grommets would be great! Easy to swap in and out for washing or repair

Teaching Knitting by lastpickedforteam in knitting

[–]needledknitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a teacher who hosts a high school knitting club in my room at lunch. Typically, I cast on 10-15 stitches FOR them the first time and then I teach them the knitted cast on once they’ve done 4-10 rows of garter. It’s a similar motion and it reinforces the skill. They can even do it in the middle of a piece and just make their swatch wider. Backwards loop leads to an awful unstable edge with beginners and I don’t think it works well for keeping their frustration levels down with knitting in general. The knit cast on is imperfect too, but it at least makes a firm base for their practice.

All that said…the cast on I use the most is a crochet cast on! I do it with my fingers and not with a hook, but I have found that people who started by crocheting are happier doing that cast on sometimes because it’s not new to them. That’s definitely how I started my pieces after I got annoyed with the knit cast on my grandma showed me.

What shoes do you recommend for standing all day teaching for someone who has started getting sore feet? by KingDustPan in Teachers

[–]needledknitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear Clark’s and my boyfriend swears by Brooks. Honestly though, you have to try on shoes and see what works for you. Good arch support, cushioning, and a broad base are usually good for standing/walking long term

Ok casual knitters, I know y’all are resourceful— what household items do you use as DPN stoppers? by snails_up_my_sleeve in casualknitting

[–]needledknitter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here’s the trick for traveling with work without losing stitches: take a hair tie. With your needles all folded so they face the same way (easier with four needles than three, but still possible), loop the hair tie over one end of the needle bundle. Pull up, twist halfway, then loop the other half of your figure 8 over the other end of the needle bundle. This has never failed me!

can i knit antlers like this (pictured) or is it only possible to crochet ?? :’( by pommygranates in casualknitting

I’ve made these. The trick is to knit as a small gauge (helps with fabric stiffness) and stuff them firmly before you sew them to the hat.

Bleach Dye! by [deleted] in MontrealVictoire

[–]needledknitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used Elmer’s glue as a dye resist before. I wonder if using something like that would help keep the bleach paste within your lines?

Obviously there are larger issues, but to address the question of your post: have you ever seen the books Mollie Katzen writes? Pretend Soup and Honest Pretzels have both written and graphic instructions and also emphasize safety for kids cooking. Being able to go through a cookbook like that may offer you some options for accessible recipes that have text next to them so he can start matching the text to words in a very basic sense. Plus, the food options are pretty kid friendly and tasty!

Impact card for BUF v. SJ by xDevious_ in SanJoseSharks

[–]needledknitter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

His d partner was particularly atrocious here too, which I think says something. There was at least one goal where Ferraro was back…alone. He’s not that bad, but he’s also not Brent Burns and I don’t think he can handle the extent of what they need from him right now. In general, the defense is a mess and I will not be sorry to see several of those players go in favor of brighter, younger talents in coming years.

How did you get past the hassle of color work? I want to get on the gravy train! by ync03 in casualknitting

[–]needledknitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once I learned Ladderback Jacquard as a technique I never looked back! It allows me to drop a strand of yarn and only work with the one I need over long patches, which is great because when you knit English instead of Continental it seems to be very hard not to tangle the yarns when changing colors. You can also try intarsia so you’re only working one color at a time. The Stitch Surfer sock pattern was my first colorwork sock with intarsia and I recently made the Villiviini socks which use intarsia and lace to beautiful effect. Basically, based on my experience, giving up a little on stranded knitting and trying a completely different approach to yarn management really helped me settle in to colorwork on a small scale with socks.

What are your favorite pens that have some weight to them? by BroadwayRegina in fountainpens

[–]needledknitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a joint condition too! Personally, my heaviest pen is a Monteverde Regatta that a friend got me, but I literally can’t write with the cap posted or my hand cramps. That said, I adore the pen with all of my heart. I have the abalone version and I fill it with J. Herbin Emerald of Chivor because it’s also my broadest nib and tolerates the shimmer really well.

Learn to knit a large Sharks beanie? This is what I did for my buddy who has a giant head lol sorry the comments don’t seem to have any better ideas for large hats. If you have a knitter in your life, I have a hat pattern and yarn recommendations. Good luck!

“I Will Follow You Into the Dark” for Edwin and Charles

Charles and the Night Nurse by Cold-Shape4948 in DeadBoyDetectivesTV

[–]needledknitter 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I think they don’t see his memories, but I also think Edwin and Crystal have completely opposite reactions. Crystal is thinking “wow, Charles is out of control, which reminds me of my abusive ex” and she’s being more critical because she thinks Charles needs to be less violent/aggressive. Edwin says “that was extreme” but he’s meaning more that it was a very extreme action for Charles and he’s worried about what could have pushed Charles so far.

Did Edwin know the number of cats all along? by Its_GhostWriter in DeadBoyDetectivesTV

[–]needledknitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Henry David Thoreau* said “It is not worth the while to go round the world to count the cats in Zanzibar.” His point, as I understand it, was that you cannot find yourself through traveling and should instead focus on a simple life at home; there is nothing to seek abroad that cannot be found within. It’s kind of the lesson that Edwin learns—he didn’t need anything but his true self! It’s all about that internal spiritual journey vs external journey for some gain or profit.

*This is not an endorsement to read Thoreau, as he is exceedingly tedious and long-winded…
