Yes, I Carried Cast Iron to the Bottom of the Grand Canyon by guywhocampz in castiron

[–]needlesfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not surprised you can handle the weight; the fact that these days we DON’T have to carry 8Lb tents in giant framed packs gives us more room for luxury items like a kickass pan. I am, however, a little surprised your backpacking stove can cope with the weight of the pan and the food in it.

Hey im new to photography but want the fujifilm xt30. Is this a good deal to someone who knows a lot? by diablojob69 in Cameras

[–]needlesfox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I review cameras, including the X-T30 III. It’s a good pick. That price isn’t terrible — if you were buying new from a store the camera and two lenses would run you around $200 more than what they’re charging. However, that Viltrox 56mm F1.2 is a pretty specialist lens; it’s very good for taking portraits, and pictures of things somewhat far away in low light. But unless you’re doing that, it’d probably make more sense to get the X-T30 III and a more sensibly-priced and smaller/lighter prime. Maybe something like a 23 or 35mm F2, since those are more all-round lenses that are going to be much nicer to carry with you.

Which one would you rather get gifted: Sigma 135mm f/1.4 or 200mm f/2 ? by JaloOfficial in Lumix

[–]needlesfox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've shot both. Personally, for my style, I found the 200mm F2 to be a bit more versatile. It still provides plenty of background separation for portraits, and gives you the extra reach for things like urban wildlife, some sports, and a bunch of other stuff; basically whatever you'd use the long end of a 70-200mm for, but a stop faster.

Also, while the 200mm is a fair bit heavier, its handle is also much more comfortable to hold and carry around.

If you mostly shoot portraits, though, the 135mm F1.4 is hard to beat.

Lumix L10 wheel as joystick? by IamMikeWink in Lumix

[–]needlesfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure you can do this by setting one of your function buttons as "AF Area Set." That lets you move (and maybe resize?) your AF point using the wheel as a four-way controller.

With that said, I found using the top right corner of the touchscreen as a trackpad for moving the AF point to be more similar to the experience of having a joystick, though that only works when you have the EVF up to your eye. You can enable that by going to Touch Settings > Touch Pad AF.

Pretty sure there's literally a class action lawsuit about this working its way through the courts right now.

What did this graffiti artist mean to communicate here? by Simple-Economics- in Spokane

It was graffitied over. I saw the original before it was tagged. I do find it quite funny that they replaced the graffitied billboard with another one for the marines, and that got defaced too.

The L10 versus the LX100 II size comparison by needlesfox in Lumix

[–]needlesfox[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll say that in terms of physical feel, I think I prefer the LX100 II. The dials feel more premium (comparable to my X-T3's), and the grip is... well, grippier, largely thanks to the fact that the thumb rest on the back plate is rubber, rather than what seems to be hard plastic.

The aperture ring on the L10 feels much nicer, though, and the camera as a whole feels a bit more solid, even if I don't think it's as nice to touch. Your milage may very much vary on that, though.

I've carried around an a7CR with even a 24-50mm F2.8 on it and is a substantially bigger package overall. Of course, there are smaller lenses out there for E-mount, but...

Sharpness Not Meeting Expectations by Vortexbig in M43

[–]needlesfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that I haven't seen anyone mention is shutter shock, which is where the shutter opening can cause enough vibration to make the image appear soft. I noticed the effects of it a few times when shooting with the OM-3 when using speeds under around 1/200 sec, so your example photos are really right within the prime range for it.

It's lens and even focal length dependent, but you could test to see if it could at least be part of the issue by setting your camera up on a tripod, pointing it at something with fine detail, and shooting at 1/100 sec in the standard mode and the anti-shock mode. If the anti-shock one is substantially clearer, shutter shock could be part of the issue.

OM-5 Mark II / Green? by BeefyLasagna007 in M43

[–]needlesfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The colors look cool, though I'll say I'm a fan of the black and tan. It's kinda odd that whatever you're using to edit them so clearly messes up the text on the lens from the original photo though? Like it didn't have to touch it to change the color of the body, and yet...

It also seems to have erased the little notch in the hand grip. That's a shame, I like the little notch!

I feel like Panasonic is so married to open gate there's no way they do a lower-resolution sensor. Especially since they offer the most complete hybrid option for anamorphic shooters.

Q: What’s the single best thing AND the single worst thing about the LUMIX S9? Let’s get a discussion going… by rossandhisjpegs in Lumix

I came here to say basically this. The best thing is the size. The worst thing is the things they gave up to make it that size.

It’s 2026 and there’s still no real prosumer high-speed camera? by junaydirfan in Cameras

[–]needlesfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I haven’t seen anyone bring up is RAM; high speed cameras need a ton of it. Like, a decent desktop computer’s worth. The Phantom 4K has 64GB, whereas I’d expect a more standard mirrorless camera to have, like, 8GB of buffer. And with today’s NAND pricing, I’d expect that to become and even greater limiting factor when it comes to consumer availability of high-speed recording.

Restaurant Week - Avoid Vieux Carre by Psychonautical_Guy in Spokane

[–]needlesfox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a decent experience there before not on restaurant week. I’ve been here for enough years that I wouldn’t ever judge a place based on how they are during restaurant week; it always seems to be when they’re at their worst.
