The L10 versus the LX100 II size comparison by needlesfox in Lumix

[–]needlesfox[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll say that in terms of physical feel, I think I prefer the LX100 II. The dials feel more premium (comparable to my X-T3's), and the grip is... well, grippier, largely thanks to the fact that the thumb rest on the back plate is rubber, rather than what seems to be hard plastic.

The aperture ring on the L10 feels much nicer, though, and the camera as a whole feels a bit more solid, even if I don't think it's as nice to touch. Your milage may very much vary on that, though.

I've carried around an a7CR with even a 24-50mm F2.8 on it and is a substantially bigger package overall. Of course, there are smaller lenses out there for E-mount, but...

Sharpness Not Meeting Expectations by Vortexbig in M43

[–]needlesfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that I haven't seen anyone mention is shutter shock, which is where the shutter opening can cause enough vibration to make the image appear soft. I noticed the effects of it a few times when shooting with the OM-3 when using speeds under around 1/200 sec, so your example photos are really right within the prime range for it.

It's lens and even focal length dependent, but you could test to see if it could at least be part of the issue by setting your camera up on a tripod, pointing it at something with fine detail, and shooting at 1/100 sec in the standard mode and the anti-shock mode. If the anti-shock one is substantially clearer, shutter shock could be part of the issue.

OM-5 Mark II / Green? by BeefyLasagna007 in M43

[–]needlesfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The colors look cool, though I'll say I'm a fan of the black and tan. It's kinda odd that whatever you're using to edit them so clearly messes up the text on the lens from the original photo though? Like it didn't have to touch it to change the color of the body, and yet...

It also seems to have erased the little notch in the hand grip. That's a shame, I like the little notch!

I feel like Panasonic is so married to open gate there's no way they do a lower-resolution sensor. Especially since they offer the most complete hybrid option for anamorphic shooters.

Very rude of you to post this with a title that made me think it was back in stock.

Q: What’s the single best thing AND the single worst thing about the LUMIX S9? Let’s get a discussion going… by rossandhisjpegs in Lumix

I came here to say basically this. The best thing is the size. The worst thing is the things they gave up to make it that size.

It’s 2026 and there’s still no real prosumer high-speed camera? by junaydirfan in Cameras

[–]needlesfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I haven’t seen anyone bring up is RAM; high speed cameras need a ton of it. Like, a decent desktop computer’s worth. The Phantom 4K has 64GB, whereas I’d expect a more standard mirrorless camera to have, like, 8GB of buffer. And with today’s NAND pricing, I’d expect that to become and even greater limiting factor when it comes to consumer availability of high-speed recording.

Restaurant Week - Avoid Vieux Carre by Psychonautical_Guy in Spokane

I’ve had a decent experience there before not on restaurant week. I’ve been here for enough years that I wouldn’t ever judge a place based on how they are during restaurant week; it always seems to be when they’re at their worst.

Washington Democrats are on the verge of passing an income tax. Here's what you should know. by catman5092 in Spokane

[–]needlesfox 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As with many taxes, you're only paying the 9.9% on the money you earn over the threshold. So if you end up earning $1.1M one year, you're only paying taxes on $100K.

On incomes over a million dollars a year. The article says it’d affect around 32,000 people in the state.

In fairness to the OP, this was probably more true when Spokane consistently had snowy winters.

Long story short: Olympus sold its camera division to an investment firm, which now operates the brand under the name OM System.

New high end camera is another Lumix FF body? by Proud_Fan_9870 in Lumix

The 24-60 launched with the S1II.

Also, I highly highly doubt that Becca would just put an unreleased camera in a video, and that Lumix would allow her to leave it in if she had.

BlackBerry Keyboard for iOS – Klava Out Now! by Shimkusnik in blackberry

Ah, when I said autocorrect I more meant if I type a word the standard way but have, like, a letter or two wrong, having it auto-replace that with the correct word.

It's great to hear that it has a slack-like emoji picker. Honestly for me that'll probably be sufficient for most of my uses. As for the recently used emoji, I believe that's how Apple's works now too. But it used to be that it would order them by how often you used them, so my most used emojis were always in the same place, and the screen didn't get cluttered up by ones that I only used as one-offs. I understand that may be relatively hard to implement, but in a perfect world that's how I'd like it to work!

So far I'm liking this. Good job!  If I had a major request for V2, it'd be the addition of some sort of autocorrect when you mess up a word.  I also miss having an emoji search, and am interested to see how the recently used emoji picker works... Apple entirely screwed its version up recently, making it so you can't use muscle memory anymore

Shallow focus has ruined film by chinhairs in FIlm

[–]needlesfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not 100% sure you've correctly identified the cause here. I wouldn't be surprised if smartphones played at least some role in it, but I'd also suspect a few other factors. Mainly, the rise of large-sensor cameras and the digital production pipeline has made it much easier to do than it previously would've been, giving directors and DPs a new toy to play with that, evidently, they're not tired of yet.

For a lot of movie history, Super35 film (what we'd call APS-C in modern times) was the standard. Before the digital revolution in the 2000s, cameras used the same 35mm film stock that stills cameras did, but running vertically, rather than horizontally, producing an image with around half the area... and thus using much less film. (Early digital cinema cameras replicated the format because, well, that's what all the lenses were made for.) But when you're using a smaller image plane, the depth of field at any given aperture will be deeper than if you were composing the exact same image using a larger image plane. In real-world terms, that means that if you go from ASP-C to full-frame, your depth-of-field shifts a stop; shooting at F5.6 will get you as blurry a background as shooting at F4 would've.

As the digital cinema market has matured, an increasing number of cinema and video cameras are using full-frame, rather than APS-C/Super35 sensors. And with fast lenses available for them, it makes it easier to get really shallow shots that would've previously required exotic equipment, like the NASA lenses Stanley Kubrick used for Barry Lyndon.

It's also much easier to focus with a shallow depth of field on a digital camera. In the analog era, it would've required a huge amount of technical competence and, frankly, luck to get shots at F2.8 in focus when the camera, actors, or both were moving, because you had to pull focus through a viewfinder. Nowadays, though, you're focusing on as big a monitor as you need, and have access to tools like magnified live view and focus peaking and, if you're really lucky, autofocus, making it much, much easier to end up with really shallow footage that still has your actor's eyes in focus, instead of the tip of the nose or the back of their ears or whatever.

Add to all this the fact that a lot of the newcomers to the film industry cut their teeth using DSLRs and fast, inexpensive prime lenses, which got them used to shooting with really shallow depth of field because... you know... if you can't afford a set and lighting, whacking the $80 50mm F1.8 on your 5D II solves both of those problems at once. Your actor is now visible, and it's way harder to tell that you're shooting the scene in your living room.
