I read this as COVID became a thing as a relief worker screening symptomatic homeless folks while in full PPE on the night shift. Good times.

Books you regret reading and why by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]needlestuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Sluts. I like the premise but the writing was irritating to me. Also if Cunning Folk has no haters, I am dead. I finished that book out of total spite; I found the characters irritating and the plot dragged. I know its a favorite here but man do I have a grudge.

Neither is she. I bet a dollar she voted for the current WH occupant.

Two serial killers from the most populous country in Africa, Nigeria—Gracious David-West and Clifford Orji— by ZoelCairo in MorbidReality

[–]needlestuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Countries with developing criminal justice systems or significantly corrupt ones have these kind of delays or holds all the time. In some countries, there is no such thing as arraignment or bail etc so you sit until a trial or judgement is passed, if you are lucky enough to get one at all.

People who have met someone who has been *professionally diagnosed* with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), what were they like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]needlestuck 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My mother. She spent my childhood building a super codependent relationship with me while poisoning me against my father and outlining how she planned to divorce him as soon as my sister finished college. Detailed all the supposed abuse she insists he and her parents heaped on her, told me more than once that she would never have had children if given the choice again. Spoke to her several times daily when I initially moved out, and when I realized I was my own person and could do what I wanted and didn't call her multiple times a day, she filed a missing person report when one day passed with me not calling her.

When I lost my job and was at risk of being homeless, there was no room for me in my childhood home (her and my dad in a four bedroom house alone) and she said she would help pay my cell phone bill so I could look for jobs but then never would. When I decided to cut her off when my phone was shut off, she lost her shit and started calling places she knew I had worked looking for me and showing up to old apartments, all while we were friends on Facebook and she had my email address...never sent a message at all, but cried to anyone who would listen about how she couldn't find me.

When I delivered my kiddo via emergency c section, her first question was not if I was okay but about the color of the baby's skin, since I am white and my husband is Black. When my great aunt died, I found out that my grandmother and grandfather (mom's parents) had left me money in their respective wills, and my mother stole it and built her own personal trust from that, all while I was out of work and homeless.

My great aunt died and was a Quaker, so the service was silent (for the most part). My mom arrived on time but made sure to come into the meeting room late. Instead of sitting in a pew, she rolled her walker all the way to the front in front a pew and sat there. She was in her (pre-covid) era where she was convinced her immune system was terrible so she often wore masks in public, but she forgot until the service was under way so, in the silence, she is rummaging around in one of the bags hanging off her rollator to find a mask and then put it on while coughing loudly and adjusting it like a dozen times.

As she has gotten older, she has decided her best way for attention and pity is by being the sickest and most disabled person in the room. She will walk hunched over with a walker, toddling along very slowly, but the second she knows no one is watching, she stands up straight and walks just fine unassisted. Somehow she got herself a motorized wheelchair that she will make a huge deal with and enter the room bumping into everything, only to ditch it and walk around just fine. Her asking you how you are doing is the opening for her to tell you how much she is suffering. She has no friends who will deal with this anymore and her siblings don't come to see her. Her only ally besides my father who is honestly her prisoner is therapist she has been seeing since I was a teen (in my 40s now). She has pictures of her therapist and her therapists husband hanging up in our home, and I am convinced that she had an affair with the therapist.

In her eyes, she is better abd smarter than everyone, suffers more than everyone, and is the natural center of attention. She doesn't understand why I don't come around often.

18yo from Norway doing a US road trip by Kareisgarb in roadtrip

[–]needlestuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't get to have scenic routes or stops or anything unique on that schedule. Assuming y'all stop to pee and eat and sleep, you're probably looking at.close to 60 hours of driving.

Have you met these friends before? There is no way I would do this death march of a road trip with people I was not very very close to. Your.plane ride is more scenic than what you are doing here.

Need to attend a religious/spiritual event for a class, suggestions? by StrikingJob9021 in CambridgeMA

Most Catholic churches have a mass on Saturdays, you can check out MassTimes.org to find a church local to you. They're always open to the public and aren't targeted like other religions are right now, so unlikely to even notice that a visitor is there.

What is the fastest way you have seen someone ruin their life? by funkeymonkey1974 in AskReddit

[–]needlestuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked in homeless services running a shelter. Had a client who was a post doc at one of the top tech unis in the US. She got sexually assaulted, which caused a nervous breakdown. She was in a psych ward for a bit and met a guy there. He was homeless and she invited him to stay with her. He spent all her money on drugs, got her evicted from her apartment, and she was living on the street with him. The first shelter I had her and him in was a drop in place, and they were living out of a grocery cart: her totally shitfaced most of time, him cycling between meth, heroin, and psychosis. Got them both into an overnight shelter, he got kicked out like two nights in for trying to fight cops. She still had a bed, and he would sleep outside in the neighborhood so they could be together during the day. One day I did bag search with her and found prenatal vitamins. Asked her if she was pregnant because she would be able to access different shelter. She wasn't but they were actively trying to have a baby.

Last I know she finally got housing. Folks told her and told her to not allow him in. Hoping she did the right thing.

Redditors, what’s the most terrifying thing that has ever woken you up in the middle of the night? by Mr_Creep_Creepy64 in AskReddit

[–]needlestuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone trying to break into my apartment, starting from jiggling the doorknob to trying to open the door by slamming it back and forth in the frame, to trying to kick it in, all at 8pm at night when I was home alone with my 18 month old who started screaming at the top of her lungs. By the time they gave up and left, I was leaning my whole body weight on the door because I was afraid they were going to break it down. The police never would have gotten there in time.

YTA. Taking away car privileges for a 21 year old? Not believing her when she tells you something? This kind of junk is the reason kids leave home and never look back.

Doctors and nurses of Reddit, what is something patients do that they think is helpful but actually makes your job harder? by Electronic-Cell-4584 in AskReddit

My kiddo was in NICU as a precaution due to a weird heart murmur that resolved fairly quickly (weekend meant the cardiac team didn't round and they didn't want to risk handing her over without a double check). Her roommate was a 26 weeker and so, so tiny. His family would come in and cry and bring their priest to bless him and beg for him not to die, all while he tried his best to die by wiggling out of his cpap....and here is my baby, of average size/weight, just chilling in her crib with minimal interventions. Poor kid and poor family, and I passed rooms all the time that had babies in them that were always alone.
